CHAPTER 05

IT TOOK DAYS FOR JACQUELINE TO RESPOND TO FURY'S REQUESTS.  She refused to eat or drink, only sitting on her bed with her hand on her neck where her special necklace used to be. Every day she'd be asked the same questioned and she responded the same way.

"How'd you get your powers?"

"I don't know."

"How long have you had them?"

"I don't know."

"Who knows about them?"

"I don't know."

Eventually, Fury let Steve Rogers talk to her. She refused to look at him, only feeling betrayal when she did. She spent her time picking at the bracelets on her wrists, trying to get them off in order to escape.

"I didn't know he would do that to you." Steve sighed, watching her play with the bracelets, "I gained your trust and I let you down. I'm sorry for that."

"These bracelets won't teach me control. The longer they're on, the more powerful my break will be." Jacq stated, looking away from Steve, "I want to learn control just as much as you all want me to."

The door opened and Nick Fury stepped in, "Now say that to my face."

Jacqueline curled up into herself even more and looked over at Steve with fear in her eyes. He quickly stood up and placed himself between Jacqueline and Fury, "Back off, Fury."

"It's been over a week, Rogers. I think she's capable of giving us results." Fury stated,

Jacq reached over and grabbed Steve's hand, causing him to step out of the way. The young girl stood up with confidence and looked directly into Fury's eye, "I want to learn control."

"We'll start right away then." Fury replied with a smirk.

Jacqueline stood in the middle of a simulation, a VR headset resting over her eyes. She took a deep breath and looked around noticed she was in an abandoned warehouse, "Just show us what you got, Braden." Fury said over the speakers and Jacq sighed,

"Even I don't know what I've got." She stated.

To her left, a man with a gun ran towards her before stopping and aiming. Jacq shot out her hand towards the man and nothing happened. The man shot and the screen went dark.

"Let's try that again." Fury's voice resonated throughout the room and Jacqueline nodded.

This time, a group of men appeared behind her. Jacq concentrated and tried to make something happened, but when the screen went dark, she took off the headset and looked over to where Fury, Steve, and a few other people were observing her, "I don't know what's wrong."

"Try. Harder." Fury stated.

She glared at him before putting the headset back on. She went through another two rounds, failing each time before giving up once again, "I can't do it."

"You're not trying hard enough." Fury repeated and Jacqueline looked over at him,

"Not trying hard enough?! I want to learn control, why would I not be trying?! I don't know how any of this works! So don't tell me to try harder!" With each sentence, ice began forming on the windows. With one last push, glass shattered around the room.

Her brown eyes widened at the sight, "I'm so sorry."

Fury looked over at Steve and other agents, "I think we know what triggers it."

Fury and Steve brought Jacqueline to the medical bay to get her cuts cleaned. As she sat there, one doctor put antisceptic to her cuts while the other read her charts, "So we know it's emotion that triggers her powers."

"But extreme emotion. She has to get worked up to an extent before anything happens."

"That's why the events in Florida took place. Her mother was killed, she was extremely upset. Hence why the whole town froze over." A man in a suit said, standing near the door. Jacqueline looked at his name tag that read Coulson.

"She is right here." Jacqueline sighed,

"But why hasn't it happened before?" Steve asked. Jacq played with the bracelets, not looking at anybody in the room. Steve eyed her, "Jacqueline, what aren't you telling us?"

She looked into his ocean blue eyes before looking at Fury and Coulson and back to Steve, "When I was young, my mom gave me a necklace."

"A necklace?"

"I don't remember much from when I was a kid. I remember living in Montana and having these huge snowstorms. My dad died in one of them. But when I was seven we moved to Florida. It was a huge change. It was hot all the time. Right before we moved, my mom gave me the necklace. When my step-dad ripped it off of me that day, everything came flooding back." She looked away, "I caused those snowstorms. I caused my father's death. My mom brought me to this person with magical powers to conceal my own and take away my memory of them."

They all stood in silence for a moment, "Looks like we have a lot of training to do."
