Home, But Not Home Free.
You sigh and hug Jack as your house comes into view. He guides the staff through the window and lands it on the floor. "I"ll be back soon, Hanna. But for now, I've gotta go." He says, right before kissing you gently on the lips. "Jack, I love you," you say. Jack grins and kisses you again. "I love you too, Hanna. Don't ever forget me. And try to think of something to tell your mom that will explain your hair, eyes, and skin. She'll want to know!" He says as he flies back outside. You make a pleased 'hmm' sound and grab your skateboard. Suddenly, an idea pops into your head. You release a small bit of your new magic into the board, and see it turn an icy blue. You let go, but it stays floating. Yes! you think. Soon, you are flying above the town, sending small puffs of snow into the air for fun. You already miss Jack, and form a tiny ice sculpture of him. You make mental note to make a bigger one later, and pocket the small one. The magic ice won't melt. After a while, you see the school bully, Mycroft Slater, pushing around some sixth graders. You frown and get lower, surrounding yourself with a mini-blizzard so they can't see who you are. "Mycroft Slater!" you shout. "Leave those kids alone, or face the consequences!" The tall bully turns tail and runs, as do the sixth graders. You release the mini-blizzard, revealing yourself to the world, which consists of a stray cat and a snowman, currently. The cat, an orange tom, meows and prances tho other direction. someone behind you sniffles. You whirl around and face them. It's a small, child, probably about four of five years old. Aw, crap, you think as the kid stared at you wide-eyed. "Hey, um... That... That snow thing was a...." You say, frantically trying to think of an explanation. "It was a... Light show! Yeah, y'know, smoke and mirrors, all fake. So, nothing to worry about. But don't tell anyone." You say, hoping he believes you. "ohkay. I whon't teww anywody." He replies, reveling a gap in his front teeth. You smile feebly.
Jack leaned against the wall, staring at the ceiling. Why did I let her go?!? I love her. And now I'm about to go on a crazy adventure to Antarctica. UUUUGGGHHH. He thought restlessly. North pokes his head and squinted. "Time to go. Come."
"Hanna! Get your butt down here and get in the dang bus! You're gonna be late, and I'll be gettin' a note!" Your mom screams up the stairs the next day. Right, you remember. School. Groaning, you get out of bed and get dressed. Deciding that your mom couldn't really stop you, you sneak into her bathroom and do yourself up with blue, white, and sparkly makeup before heading into the kitchen.
(minus the fangs--you don't have fangs... yeah... I'll see myself out now-- but NO. FANGS.)
Your mom stops short, a cup of coffee in her hand. "Hanna... Did you get into my makeup?" She asks quietly. "Yes. I did. I was hoping you wouldn't hurt me, because I could never emotionally recover." You say sarcastically, making a swirl of snow in the palm of your hand. "Hanna Mae Collin, you go take that makeup off right now, or so help me I will beat the *(adult content)* out of you!" Your mom practically screams. You cross your arms and make a sassy face. "Make me," you say quietly, yet firmly. "I am seventeen, and I can make my own decisions. Plus, you never let me put anything but clothes on. No makeup, no earrings, nothing. I'm making a stand."
"Girl, don't you sass me. Today, you can wear it. Now get to school, or I will make you sorry!!" Your mom's voice in quite loud. You huff angrily and storm out the door backpack in hand. Snow is piled in drifts on the sidewalk, but you don't care. You realize that you feel fine, even though the temperature must be in the low twenties at least. Everyone else is bundled up, and you are in a thin, teal long sleeve shirts and bluejeans. People stare at you like you're crazy. Since your house a block away from the school, Jayville High, you come to it only a few minutes. Mycroft is waiting by his locker for any 'nerdy kids' to bully. "Mycroft," you say, "don't even think about it. If I see you bullying even one kid, I will make you pay. Kapeash?" Mycroft seems to be intimidated by your tone of voice, and quickly nods. Knowinh he's not as tough as he says, you make a dark face. "I thought so. Remember. Just one kid. One kid." Then you grin and skip down the hall, little bits of snow sifting out of your clothes. You stop at your locker and open it to put some books in. A mirror is on the inside of the door, and you admire your reflection for a minute. Then, you head to your first class of the day: History. You rather enjoy hearing about old wars, settlements, kings, queens, disasters, and inventions. Also, you have a wonderful memory, and almost always get A's. Unfortunately, your seat is right next to Aimee Roan, the school nerd's seat. She usually gets shot at with spitballs, and, since everyone in the school has bad aim, you usually get hit. But today, you think, is going to be different.
