Chapter 25
Ayano heard more footsteps behind her, and she knew people were already getting past the robots. Not looking back at who got past, she continued skating, only to pull to a stop right before a deep hole.
Taking a step back, she looked out over the deep chasm she had almost fallen into.
Others had caught up to her by this point, and we're looking over the chasm.
"Hey Hey! The first barrier's a piece of cake!" Present Mic exclaimed, "Then what about the second? If you fall, you're out! If you don't wanna fall, then crawl! It's "The Fall"!"
"When did they build this stage?" Uraraka asked from beside Ayano, and she looked over, watching as Tsu made her way to the edge, crouching and grabbing hold of the roped, easily scaling across.
"She's fast!" Mina exclaimed.
A girl started talking from behind Ayano, but she was too busy to listen to what the girl was saying, until she propelled by her and over most of the cavern.
I'm not loosing to some support course girl! Ayano thought and clenched her fists, she watched as Todoroki slid across, freezing the roped as he did. Smiling, she started to skid across the ones that he had already frozen, soon catching up to be in the front of the crowd. Above her, Bakugo was propelling himself forwards, and he was easily getting ahead of her. Instead of going faster, Ayano kept herself focused to the roped, not in the mood too fall.
She reached the ending soon and jumped off the roped, running forwards. She had cracked the ice on her boots, and slipped her gloves back on. Not wanting to take them off again and make her fall behind more, she continued on foot, speeding past a couple other kids as she ran.
Though as she passed a sign, she saw the few kids in front of her walking carefully, some jumping and some flinging themselves offer the field of dirt.
Not wanting to fall behind any more, Ayano froze the soles of her shoes again, and started skidding across the field, from the stadium, Ayano heard Presents Mics voice, explaining how the field was a mine field.
"It's set up so that you can tell where the mines are if you look carefully!" He was explaining. "So you have to exploit your eyes and legs. By the way, these landline are for games, so they're not that powerful, but they're loud and flashy enough to make you wet your pants!"
Around her, Ayano was watching as kids were stepping on mines and flying up in the air. Looking behind her, she was hearing a series of loud bangs and she noticed that she was setting off mines behind her as she slid over them, but she was too fast to get caught in one of the explosions.
Next to her, someone flew past her and she felt a wave of heat as she slid across the field. Looking at who the person was, she sighed, "Bakaho, of course." She muttered, mainly to herself. In front of her, he quickly passed Todoroki.
"And now we've got someone new in the lead!" Present Mic exclaimed as Bakugou passed Todoroki. From the stadium, Ayano heard cheering, along with Present Mic's voice. "Rejoice, mass media! It's the kind of development you guys love!"
"Hey, hey, hey, the rest of the pack is also speeding up!" Ayano looked behind her, seeing that people were indeed closing the gap between her, Todoroki, and Bakugo, Iida wasn't that far behind them also, setting off pink explosions as he set off the mines. "However! Even as they push and pull at each other, can the two at the top remain in the lead?"
"I hope not." Ayano muttered, pushing her feet faster against the ground, making herself speed up and start to close the gap between her and the two fighting fo lead.
Suddenly, behind her, there was a giant explosion that made Ayano slow down slightly and look behind her, seeing someone flying above the field, a giant light pink cloud being the culprit of the flying person. The breeze from the explosion made her skid forwards and slightly loose control, running into someone.
"Hey! Get off me you idiot!" Someone familiar screeched angrily, and Ayano stood up, seeing that Bakugo was the one she had skidded into.
"Sorry, Bakaho. Lost control for a moment. Thanks for being distracted though." She smirked, "You're better to fall onto than the ground."
"What's that supposed to mean twerp?" He shouted angrily, jumping up.
Though looking behind her, she saw Izuku rushing his way through the air, straight towards the three. She watched as he flew right above them, easily taking the lead.
"Holy shit." Ayano muttered, watching him with wide eyes. "He's an idiotic genius!" She exclaimed.
Next to her, Bakugou flung himself up in the air, with an explosion, and Ayano had to close her eyes due to the heat it gave off.
'Guess that means I should make my move too!' Ayano thought, starting to skid over the field again.
Though the ground suddenly froze over, and Ayano had a hard time staying up. Falling backwards, she watched as Todoroki ran ahead of her, ice trailing out from under his feet.
Hitting her own feet against the ground, Ayano cracked the ice she had covering the soles of her shoes, and got up, sliding across the newly formed ice path. As she was sliding, she saw Izuku cause another explosion, and flung himself off the field, getting into the last stretch of the race.
Ayano pushed herself forwards, and started running once she got off the mine field, there was still a bit of space between her and the people behind her, but she didn't want to risk it, so she chose not to freeze the soles of her shoes and get behind.
As the entered the tunnel, she saw Bakugou and Todoroki racing ahead to get in front of Izuku. Though she watched as Izuku made his way out of the tunnel and into the stadium.
"Right now, the person back in the stadium is that man... Izuku Midoriya's made a huge splash!"
"Guess he made first." Ayano said to herself between breaths as she continued running through the tunnel, the end getting closer.
She made her way into the stadium after Todoroki and Bakugou, winning fourth overall.
Bending her over with her hands on her knees, she worked on evening her breaths out... once that was done, she looked up in the hero section of the course. Seeing both of her parents cheering proudly.
She smiled and looked back at the tunnel, watching as other people made their way out, some of them sitting on the ground to catch their breath, and some of them talking with other contestants. Seeing Iida standing. Over by the side, Ayano made her way over to him.
"Congrats on finishing the race in one piece." She joked, and Iida looked up at her, a completely serious expression on his face.
"Thank you! And same for you Miss Hyida!" He said loudly.
"It was a joke." She said, crossing her arms. "I doubt they would of let any students die in this race, let alone get torn into separate pieces." Iida looked at her blankly, and she sighed, "Whatever. Then she looked up seeing the rankings."
In front of her, Izuku got first, followed by Todoroki in second, and Bakugou in third. Then she saw herself up on it, with a 4 next to her smiling face, her name underneath it.
With that, Ayano heard cheering in the crowd and she felt her cheeks warm up slightly, she didn't have to look to know it was her parents. Right after her, was a Class B students that looked slightly creepy to Ayano, though after him was Iida, scoring in Sixth place.
"Well, we might be fighting against each other in the next round, Iida." She said, looking over at Iida, who was placing on his glasses.
After the placing, everyone gathered in front of the podium, where Midnight was standing.
"The top 42 made it through to the next round. It's unfortunate but don't worry, even if you didn't make it! We've prepared other chances for you to shine." She licked her lips and smiled, "The real competition begins next! The press cavalry'll be all over it! Give it your all!" Rising her hand in the air, the screen behind her started to shuffle things in a blur. "Now then, here is the second game, I already know that it is, but what could it be? What could it be? I just said it! And now here it is!:
The screen slowed to a stop, showing golden words spelling 'Cavalry battle'.
"Oh dear. I'll have to team up, won't I?" Ayano muttered to herself with a sigh. "Well, guess there's no I in team."
"Let me explain." Midnight said, turning over to the screen. "The participants can form teams of two to four people as the wish. It's basically the same as a regular cavalry battle, but the one thing that's different is... based on the results of the last game, each person has been assigned a point value. And the points assigned go up by five starting from the bottom. So 42nd place gets five points, and 41st gets ten points!"
Ayano looked right at first place, seeing an outrageous amount of points given to him. Ten million was shown next to the number one.
Scanning down to 4th place, Ayano sweat dropped, seeing the outrageous amount of points she had herself, though they came nowhere near Izuku's amount of points.
Everyone was staring at Izuku, and Ayano sighed, she knew that most of them planned on going after him, knowing that if you snag that amount of points, then you're guaranteed to move on.
Ayano walked up to Midnight, and caught her attention.
"Is it possible to switch your headband with other people on your team, to confuse others?"
Midnight looked at her, a smile on her face as she nodded, and Ayano smirked, a plan already forming in her head.
'This will be interesting.' She thought.
