Monster

Elsworth's shoes tapped against the icy floor. His arms were wrapped around himself as he sighed. Instead of the blue aura around the palace, it had turned red with fear. "Get it together..." he whispered to himself. "Control it. Don't feel don't feel don't feel..." He put his hands on his head as more icicles came out of the wall. "Don't feel!"

He whimpered when the floor cracked and looked around at all the sharp spikes coming out of the wall, shrinking in on himself.

"Y/n...help me..."

-

"Look, Sven. The sky's awake..." Olaf sighed, patting the reindeer to get his attention. Sven looked up at the aurora borealis and grinned, making happy reindeer noises.

Anna and Y/n held onto each other as they walked, shaking.

"Are you cold?" Kristoff asked.

Anna let go a bit, trying not to make him worry. "A little."

He began to reach out to put his arms around her, but stopped when he remembered she was engaged and he was just too awkward.

"Wait, come here," he said instead, leading them to a steam geyser.

"Ooh, warm..." Y/n sighed, content, taking in the few seconds of warmth before they carried on.

"So, uh, about my friends..." Kristoff began, trying to figure out how best to explain it to them. "Well, I...say friends, they're more like family. Anyway, when I was a kid, it was just me and Sven until they, you know, kinda took us in."

"They did?" Anna asked, able to sympathize with the feeling of being alone until a special person came [you, not Hans].

"Yeah. I don't wanna scare you. They can be a little bit...inappropriate. And...loud. Very loud. They're also...stubborn, at times, and overbearing...and heavy. Really, really heavy. But you'll get it they're fine they mean well -"

"Kristoff." Anna put her hand on his shoulder, quickly getting his attention. "They sound wonderful."

"They do, and we're excited to meet them." Y/n gave his other shoulder a squeeze. "No jokes about us being an item to them, I promise."

"Yeah...yeah, it wouldn't end well for you..." He added the last part quickly, then took in a breath to get himself amped. "Okay, then...meet my family." He held his arms out to a field of huge boulders, then began to walk around, talking to them as if they were real people. "Hey, guys!"

Olaf jumped down, standing next to Y/n. Sven, once freed, jumped over to them excitedly.

"They're..." Anna began, looking at Y/n.

"...rocks."

Olaf leaned over a little and whispered, "He's cr-ay-zay..."

"Rocko's looking sharp, as usual. Clay - whoa! I didn't even recognize you, you lost so much weight!"

"I'll distract him...while you run." Olaf waved at them, drawing nearer. "Hi, Sven's family! It's nice to meet you." He pat the top of one of the mossy boulders while the princess and her handmaid only continued to look on, confused and mildly afraid. Not to mention concerned for Kristoff's mental state.

" 'Cause I love you both, I insist you run." He got in closer to hug the boulder. "I understand you're love experts? Ooh! WHY AREN'T YOU RUNNING???"

"Uh, okay, well..." Anna began to break away, gently taking Y/n with her. "We're gonna go..."

Kristoff ran after them, begging, "No no no! Guys, wait!"

The ground shook before they could go any farther, rocks rolling just under their feet.

"Kristoff?!" Anna dodged them, squeezing Y/n's arm as tightly as her mittens would allow.

But Kristoff was bent over, beckoning them to come closer with a smile.

The boulders popped out, blinking up at Kristoff.

"Kristoff's home!" Bulda exclaimed.

"Kristoff!"

"Kristoff's here!"

"Kristoff's home!" Olaf repeated happily with his hands up in the air, but stopped in confusion. "Wait...Kristoff?" he asked one of the trolls, to which he nodded.

He bent down to one of the women, who took his face into her hands. "Lemme look at you."

Another woman came over, tugging his pants to pull them off. "Take your clothes off. I'll wash 'em."

"Ah!" He pulled them back on, embarrassed that girls had almost seen him without his pants. "No, I'm gonna keep my clothes on. Look, it's great to see you all, but where's Grand Pabbie?"

"He's napping," a little boy behind him said. "But look! I grew a mushroom!" He turned around to show the single mushroom on his back.

"I earned my fire crystal!" another boy said, showing off his fire magic.

Another kid tried to interject, annoyed when a grown troll said monotonously, "I passed a kidney stone."

"Kristoff, pick me up!" the last child exclaimed, running and jumping into his arms.

"You're getting big!" he said, swinging him around. Another child barrel-rolled and jumped onto his shoulder.

"Trolls...Y/n, they're trolls!" Anna said excitedly, shaking her.

The trolls all now turned to them in stunned silence and blinked until Bulda joyously called out, "He's brought girls!"

"Girls!"

"Are those real girls?!"

"They're like little cupcakes!"

They hoisted them up into their own mini crowd-wave and pulled them over to Kristoff, each wanting to clamor over them.

"What in the world?" Y/n asked, glancing up at Kristoff.

He shrugged and said, "This is what I meant by it ending badly for you..."

Bulda pushed through and took Y/n's hands, asking, "Then you must be our Kristoff's girl!"

She looked between the blond and troll, the former waving his arms as if to beg her to do something. Breaking her promise almost immediately, she said, "Actually, our last date involved jumping off a cliff, so I don't think we're compatible. But we're still planning on playing pool with the princess and king next Sunday."

While Kristoff face-palmed harder than normal, due to his mitten padding, Anna side-eyed her with surprise. "I'm sorry, we're doing what now?"

Bulda pat her hand, nodding understandingly. "It's just so wonderful when exes can still be friends." She let go and jumped right over to Anna. "You, then! Let me see you." She jumped onto her husband's hands and forced Anna down by the shoulders and looked into her eyes, pinched her nose upward, then opened her lips to reveal all of her teeth. "Bright eyes, working nose, strong teeth - yes, yes! She'll do nicely for our Kristoff."

Kristoff hid in his hands, trying to hide his red face from embarrassment - at least, that was what he was telling himself - while Anna stuttered out, "Wait wait wait. Um, no."

Coming out, Kristoff agreed, "You've got the wrong idea. No. That's not why I brought either of them here."

"Right. We're not...I'm not..." She pointed at Y/n and herself, switching off quickly. "W - we're not..."

"What's the issue, dear?" Bulda asked. "Why are you holding back from such a man?"

Bulda:
Is it the clumpy way he walks?

She jumped on the hands, Kristoff taken aback. "What?"

Cliff:
Or the grumpy way he talks?

"Oh, no," Anna tried before being cut off by a rolling troll, who went to Kristoff's foot, lifting it up.

Female Troll 1:
Or the pear-shaped, square-shaped weirdness of his feet?

"Hey!" He pulled away from her.

Another jumped up to smell him.

Male Troll 1:
And 'though we know he washes well,
He always ends up sorta smelly

He fainted at the stench in his clothes. Bulda and Cliff jumped onto his shoulders, Bulda pinching his cheek.

Bulda:
But you'll never meet a fellow who's as

Bulda, Cliff:
Sensitive and sweet

They pulled his lips up in a smile while his eyes begged Anna and Y/n to help him.

Y/n tried to step in with, "I'm sure he is, but you see, she's -"

But they were already pulling him away and forcing him to balance on them as they balled themselves back up.

Bulda, Cliff:
So he's a bit of a fixer-upper
So he's got a few flaws

Two of them hung on Sven's antlers.

Female Troll 2:
Like his peculiar reindeer

Male Troll 2:
His thing with the reindeer

Female Troll 2, Male Troll 2:
That's a little outside of nature's laws

"This is not about me!" Kristoff begged, but they continued on anyway.

Olaf, outside of the group of trolls, laughed and danced with the children.

Small Group of Trolls:
So he's a bit of a fixer-upper,
But we know what to do:
The way to fix up this fixer-upper is to fix him up with you

"Can we please just stop talking about this?" he asked. He fully knew this would happen, but was still embarrassed about it. "We've got a real, actual problem here."

"I'll say!" Bulda jumped back up to meet Anna's eyes. "So tell me, dear."

Bulda:
Is it the way that he runs scared?

Male Troll 3:
Or that he's socially impaired?

A little girl rolled into Kristoff's arms, who held her out to Anna.

Little Girl Troll 1:
Or that he only likes to tinkle in the woods?

"Please kill me," Y/n stated flatly.

The girl ran off, replaced by Cliff at the side of Kristoff, who took off his cap to ruffle his hair.

Cliff:
Are you holding back your fondness
Due to his unmanly blondness?

When she giggled, Y/n elbowed her lightly, raising her eyebrows suggestively. Anna bat her her, shaking her head.

A group of girls took him into a heart shape that they made with themselves.

Female Trolls:
Or the way he covers up that he's the honest goods?

They threw him, then rolled back up, remaining in their shape.

All:
He's just a bit of a fixer-upper
He's got a couple of bugs

"No, I don't!" he insisted, despite just scratching his head a few seconds ago.

Trolls:
His isolation is confirmation of his desperation for healing-hugs

They grabbed him tightly, Anna putting a hand on her chest, thinking it was adorable. "Aww."

All:
So he's a bit of a fixer-upper,
But we know what to do:
The way to fix up this fixer-upper is to fix him up with you

They roped them up and dragged them away, spinning them around.

"Stop it stop it stop it ENOUGH!" Kristoff finally yelled. Firmly, he informed them, "She is engaged to someone else, okay?!"

They blinked at him, then formed a circle to huddle and discuss.

Cliff:
So she's a bit of a fixer-upper

Male Troll 4:
That's a minor thing

Troll 5:
Her quote "engagement" is a flex arrangement...

The little girl popped back up, showing off her finger.

Little Girl Troll 2:
And, by the way, I don't see no ring!

They broke out of their circle, trying to force a cloak onto Kristoff.

Male Ensemble:
So she's a bit of a fixer-upper
Her brain's a bit betwixt
Get the fiancé out of the way
And the whole thing will be fixed!

They held out their hands like it was the most obvious thing in the world, leaving Kristoff to hide in his hands again with a sigh.

The female trolls were all by Anna, fawning over her and brushing her hair, and Y/n, trying to make her feel included.

Female Ensemble:
Ah, ah, ah...

Bulda:
We're not sayin' you can change him,
'Cause people don't really change
We're only saying that love's a force
That's powerful and strange
People make bad choices if they're mad or scared or stressed

Anna took Y/n's hand and squeezed it when she saw the look in her eyes, knowing what she was thinking, as she was thinking the same thing.

Bulda:
But throw a little love their way!

Female Ensemble:
[Throw a little love their way]

Female Trolls:
And you'll bring their best

All:
True love brings out their best!

Everyone's a bit of a fixer-upper
That's what it's all about!

They threw her in a traditional trolls dress and turned her around to see Kristoff in a similar getup, complete with a headpiece. Y/n snickered, glad that she was not the one they thought was in love with Kristoff.

Cliff's kids jumped on top of him from biggest to smallest.

Cliff:
Father!

Little Girl Troll 2:
Sister!

Little Boy Troll:
Brother!

All:
We need each other
To raise us up and round us out
Everyone's a bit of a fixer-upper,
But when push comes to shove...

They pushed them closer, but far away enough for Olaf to get in the middle, all his parts flailing around from the children back into place.

Olaf:
The only fixer fixer-upper that can fix a fixer-upper is

All:
True! True!
True! True! True!
Love! [True love!]
Love, love, love!
Love! [True love!]

True...

A priest got in front of them as the others circled around them, Y/n standing by Anna like her maid-of-honor.

"Do you, Anna, take Kristoff to be your trollfully weeded..."

"Wait, what?" she asked, taken aback.

"You're getting married."

All:
Love!

But before they could continue with a forced wedding, Anna fell over, more of her hair turning white. Y/n began to reach out for her, but toppled over her, ending up on the other side.

"Anna! Y/n!" Kristoff threw off the clothes he was forced into and held Anna in his arms, then tried to get Y/n to sit up. "They're as cold as ice."

An elderly troll rolled up, then popped out, looking at the girls with concern. "There is strange magic here."

"Grand Pabbie."

"Come, come. Bring them here to me." He took each of their hands into his own. "Girls, your lives are in danger. There is ice in your hearts, put there by the king. If not removed, to solid ice you will freeze, forever."

"What? No..."

"E - Elsworth would never hurt us..." Y/n tried to say, but then fell back into Kristoff's other arm. He squeezed her shoulder, trying to provide her with some comfort.

"But you can remove it, right?" Kristoff asked.

"I cannot. I'm sorry, Kristoff. If it were their heads, that would be easy. But only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart."

"An act of true love...?" Anna asked.

Bulda held up her finger in thought. "A true love's kiss, perhaps?" She leaned over and gave Cliff a long kiss that made everyone uncomfortable.

"Anna, we've got to get you back to Hans," Kristoff said. "And Y/n, don't worry, we'll think of something."

"R - right..."

"Pull us out, Sven!" They held onto him and hit dragged out of the pit the trolls had put them into. He got both girls on safely before getting on himself. "Come on, Olaf!"

"I'm coming! Let's go kiss this Hans! ...who is this Hans?!"

-

The red continued to come around Elsworth, bouncing off his pale complexion. He looked around in fear at all of the spikes he had created and the ice, now showing him his face: a crazed lunatic rather than a scared boy, his hair falling into his eyes.

Elsworth:
It's finally come...

He turned away, literally pushing away from the wall. He fixed his hair back, running his hands down to his neck and pulling on it.

Elsworth:
Come to knock down the door
I can't hide...

He hugged himself, his hands rubbing his arms.

Elsworth:
Like I hid before

He went to pacing around the room.

Elsworth:
The storm is awake
The danger is real
My time is running out
Don't feel, don't feel...

He pinched the bridge of his nose with a sigh, then backed himself into a wall, his eyes closed.

Elsworth:
"Fear will be your enemy
"And death its consequence."
That's what they once said to me and it's starting to make sense
All this pain, all this fear began because of me
Is the thing they see the thing I have to be...?

A monster...are they right?

He opened his eyes and walked away from the wall, towards the balcony, where the light was seeping in.

Elsworth:
Has the dark in me finally come to light?
Am I a monster...full of rage?

He turned away again, down the stairs.

Elsworth:
Nowhere to go but on a rampage?
Or am I just a monster...in a cage?

He went to his front door and looked out, where he saw Arendellian soldiers, led by Hans in the front.

-

As they got there, Hans looked up at the palace in awe.

Soldiers:
End this winter
Bring back summer
Keep your guard up

Snapped out of it, he turned back to everyone with a demanding glare.

Hans:
No harm comes to him

Marshmallow jumped down at them and swung his arms, only for the guards to attempt to shoot him with their crossbows. He roared at them and slammed them into a snowdrift.

Soldiers:
End this winter
Bring back summer
Keep your guard up

Elsworth took off from the door and back inside.

"The king!" one of the fallen soldiers called, pointing at him. They picked up their crossbows and ran after him as Marshmallow knocked Hans over. He looked up and saw them running after Elsworth. With his sword, he cut off one of Marshmallow's legs and ran up the stairs. As the giant snowman fell, he hit the staircase the prince was desperately trying to get up, breaking a chunk off. He let out a yell as he began to fall off. Another soldier reached out and pulled him back up.

-

Before they could reach him, Elsworth blocked the door up with a thicker coating of ice, giving him some time, despite them pounding on the door.

Elsworth:
What do I do?
No time for crying now
I started this storm
Gotta stop it somehow

Do I keep running?
How far do I go?
And would that take the storm away or only make it grow?

I'm making my world colder
How long can it survive?
Is everyone in danger as long as I'm alive?

He got as far away from sight of the soldiers as he could from the windows and broke an icicle off the wall, gripping it tightly in his hand, which went numb from the cold of it.

Elsworth:
Was I a monster from the start?!
How did I end up with this frozen heart?
Bringing destruction to the stage
Caught in a war that I never meant to wage

He looked at the ice in his hand, wetting his hand with a small pool.

Elsworth:
Do I kill the monster...?

He stopped and looked at the walls, mirroring him and all that was around him in a circle.

Elsworth:
Father...
You know what's best for me
If I die, will they be free?

A gentle voice seemed to guide him away from the ice in his hand. He looked at it again, still considering.

Elsworth:
Mother...
What if after I'm gone
The cold gets colder and the storm rages on?

"No!" He threw it behind him as hard as he could, standing up straighter.

Elsworth:
I have to stay alive
To fix what I've done
Save the world from myself
And bring back the sun!

If I'm a monster, and it's true,

-

Soldiers:
[End this winter]
[Bring back summer]

They continued to pound on the door, the ice slowly giving way.

-

Elsworth:
Then there's only one thing left for me to do

-

Soldiers:
[Keep your guard up]

-

Elsworth:
But before I fade to white,

-

Soldiers:
[End this winter]
[Bring back summer]

-

Elsworth:
I'll do all that I can to make things right

-

Soldiers:
Keep your guard up

-

Elsworth:
I cannot be a monster...
I will not be a monster...
Not tonight!

-

Soldiers:
Monster!

They went through, two of the guards running in while the rest stood guard, trying to keep the prince away from him. Seeing them, Elsworth bolted. They ran into the main room on the bottom floor and looked around. Only when one looked up did they see Elsworth sprinting up the stairs, trying not to trip over his cape. "Up there! Come on!"

He kept running away, his palace now tinted with a yellow color. It did not matter if he intended to see if Arendelle was salvageable: they would not let him leave alive.

Once he hit the top room and saw he was out of options, he looked back at the door, where the guards stood.

"We got him."

"No...please..." he begged to deaf ears. An arrow was shot at him. He put his hands up in defense, a large chunk of ice appearing in front of him, taking the arrow instead.

"Go around! Toss it!" They ran around, Elsworth instantly putting his hands up.

"Stay away!" Ice rounded them in a separation. But his look of anger soon melted into fear as he watched the duke's guards find another way around to kill him.

"Fire, fire!"

He kept shooting out sharp ice mounds, the guards avoiding them quite well. They got on either side of him, aiming their crossbows. In a panic, Elsworth pinned one up against the wall with icicles, pointing at his nose. The other guard tried to get away from the taller mounds that Elsworth made, but one was able to push him back. He tried to push against it, but the king used more of his power to cause it to break through the balcony's door. The guard fell back as the ice broke the railing off. Just as soon as he stood, his back was up against the iceberg, being pushed closer still towards the edge.

Hans had managed to break through the door with his and Arendelle's guards behind him, just in time to see Elsworth nearly impale a man and crush another. "King Elsworth!" he called, the man's back still turned to him as he hyper-fixated on what he saw as self-defense. "Don't be the monster they fear you are!"

He looked back, his face dropping, as did his hand. He looked at the man he nearly pushed off, wondering if he should check on him or if that would only get him shot.

As his back was turned, the guard who was about to be impaled aimed his crossbow to fire. Seeing this, Hans ran over and jerked his arm just as he fired, hitting the giant chandelier above Elsworth instead, slicing it off the ceiling.

The king looked up, then began to run away, falling over as the chandelier broke. He let out a short yell before he fell into darkness.
