Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Another rewrite of an old, crappy fic I used to get "revenge" on someone? It...made more sense in my head, I swear.
So, here's an actual decent book...I hope!

-

"Elsworth," Anna whispered, poking her head above her brother's bed. "Psst! Elsworth! Wake up, wake up, wake up!"

Sleepily, he groged, "Anna, go back to sleep..." He turned away from her, not at all pleased when she plopped on top of him dramatically.

"I just can't!" she sighed, exasperated. A hand dramatically fell over her forehead. "The sky's awake. So I'm awake. So we hafta play!"

"Go play by yourself."

Elsworth turned just enough to push his little sister off the bed, falling with an "Oof!" Defeated, but she thought for a moment on how to get her lazy brother out of bed. A small gasp escaped her lips and she jumped back up, trying to force his eye open.

"You wanna build a snowman?"

She let go of his eye and both opened, Elsworth showing off a cheeky smile.

-

"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" Anna kept yelling as she pulled Elsworth downstairs, who kept shushing her, looking around for any signs that their parents would wake up.

The door to their ballroom opened, Anna yelling excitedly, "Do the magic! Do the magic!"

"Okay!" he laughed. With his hands, he worked up a flurry of snow, Anna looking at his palm in awe. "Ready?" She nodded excitedly.

At her command, the burst of energy flew up, causing it to snow. Anna jumped around the room, screaming, "THIS IS AMAZING!"

"Watch this!" Elsworth stomped as hard as he could, turning the floor into ice. Anna slipped, falling, still giggling.

-

After the last snowball had been hoisted up, the siblings decorated the snowman with buttons and sticks. Elsworth, behind it, moved his arms, dropping his voice. "Hi, I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"

"I love you, Olaf!" Anna cried, jumping into a hug with the snowman.

-

Elsworth helped push Olaf for Anna so she could 'dance' on the ice with him.

-

Behind Anna, Elsworth pushed the sled off so that they went flying down one of his mountains of snow.

Laughing her head off, Anna cried, "Tickle bumps!"

-

"Catch me!" Anna called, jumping on the mountains of snow.

Elsworth created another one for his sister, grinning at her. "Gotcha!" He really did love her, even if she was a little annoying in the mornings. But days like this made it worth the sacrifice of precious sleep.

"Again!"

She was caught again, the time more hastily. "Wait!" He began to worry, realizing she could fall and crack her skull open. "Slow down!"

He slipped on the floor, disoriented for a moment, until he saw Anna about to jump again.

"Anna!"

A shot of ice left his hand and hit her in the head as she jumped. With a grunt, she fell into the snow, unmoving. Elsworth ran to her, taking her in his arms. "Anna?!"

A streak of white danced through her hair until it reached the tip.

Shaking his head, he screamed out, "Mama, Papa!"

Shards of ice came out of the ceiling as he wept over her, mumbling, "You're okay, Anna...I've got you..."

King Agnarr swung the frozen door open with his wife by his side. "Elsworth, what have you done?!" he cried, more concerned than angry. Both parents rushed over. "This is getting out of hand!"

"It was an accident!" he insisted, but looked down at the knocked-out Anna, realizing it was still his fault. "I'm sorry, Anna..."

Queen Iduna took her into her arms. "She's ice cold!" she cried.

Agnarr put his hands on her before looking up, nodding. "I know where we have to go."

-

The young blond watched the royal family's carriage go by, but something else intrigued him instead. Looking at the ground, he whispered, "Ice?" He followed with his reindeer, wanting to see why there was ice coming from the carriage and where they were going and god please let it have something to do with ice.

-

Getting out, the family made their way to the middle of the rocked ruins. Iduna still held Anna while Elsworth stayed close to Agnarr.

"Please! Help!" the king cried. "My daughter...!"

The rocks rolled down the hill to him and, one by one, popped up, revealing themselves to be trolls.

"It's the king!"

The little boy from earlier stood behind one of the rocks, awed. "Trolls?"

That rock then popped up. "Shush! I'm trying to listen!" She pulled them in closer, still staring intently at the family. Sven, not really interested in them, reached up and licked her cheek, gaining her attention. She smiled fondly at them both. "Cuties. I'm gonna keep you!" She pulled them into a hug as she made her decision.

Another one rolled and popped out, this one being much older than the rest, hints of grey in his green hair. "Your Majesty." He bowed, but got quickly to work, taking Elsworth's hand, Agnarr staying close to him. "Born with the power or cursed?"

Hesitatingly, Agnarr looked at Iduna in question, then answered, "Uh, born. And they're getting stronger."

He went from Agnarr to Iduna, motioning her. "Here, here."

She bent over, the old troll placing a hand on Anna's head, breathing a sigh of relief. "You are lucky it wasn't her heart. The heart is not so easily changed, but the head can be persuaded."

"Do what you must," Agnarr pleaded.

Magic came from his hands as he worked on Anna, declaring, "I recommend we remove all magic, even memories of magic, to be safe. But don't worry. I'll leave the fun." Memories of magic changed to the siblings playing on an ordinary snowy day of skating, snowmen, and sleigh riding. Outside. Like normal children.

Elsworth glanced at his sister, hesitantly speaking up, "But she won't remember I have powers?"

His father put a hand on his shoulder. "It's for the best."

The troll gently guided him to where he could display a vision. "Listen to me, Elsworth. There is beauty in your magic."

A blue silhouette of a young man creating a snowflake appeared.

"But also great danger."

The vision turned red, the snowflakes turning into spikes.

"You must learn to control it. Fear will be your enemy."

The spike turned into a woman, who layed at first, seemingly at the man's mercy, before rising up and overtaking him.

Terrified, the prince hid in his father's pant leg, who held him protectively. "No!" he exclaimed, then calmed his voice. "We'll protect him. He can learn to control it, I'm sure. Until then, we'll lock the gates."

-

The doors to the castle closed.

-

"We'll reduce the staff."

-

A maid pulled the curtains shut.

-

"We'll limit his contract with people and keep his powers hidden from everyone...including Anna."

-

Looking at her stuff in her room, Anna ran out, confused, to find her brother. His stuff had been moved! She had to tell him so they could get it back!

But all she found was Elsworth sadly walking into a different room. He glanced at her and waved sadly, then shut the door, leaving Anna to look down, confused.

The excuse she had been given? Puberty. All well and good for changing rooms, but why did her older brother no longer want to see her?

Again, puberty.

Puberty was a bitch.

-

"Hi!" Anna chirped excitedly to the girl in the doorway by her parents.

She only stared at her, not sure what the right choice would be.

Agnarr left his hand on her head. "It's alright," he insisted, motioning for her to get closer to the princess.

She took a few hesitant steps, then waved. Not out of shyness, but slight fear.

Royal family.

Private prince.

Lady-in-Waiting.

"Anna, dear, this is Y/n. She's just here to help Elsworth a little," Agnarr explained.

Pouting, Anna demanded, "Why can't I? I'm his sister!" She crossed her arms, looking ready to throw a tantrum.

Y/n, very well-versed in psycho children from the orphanage, took a step back. But Agnarr remained calm, explaining, "That's just how it works for princes and princesses. And Elsworth...just needs a bit of time to himself. He still loves you very much, it's just hard for him right now."

Anna smiled at Y/n and explained proudly, "He's going through puberty."

Iduna seemed mortified at hearing her little girl say that while Agnarr was equally surprised, but did not seem to mind too much.

Y/n looked up at him when he said this. She was the replacement when he did not want his sister. Great. Oh well. Might as well make the best of it.

Anna seemed content at the revelation of having a lady-in-waiting, uncrossing her andy, her face softening. "Then can she help me, too?"

Agnarr and Iduna looked at her for her input. The little girl shrugged, eyes glossed over with mild boredom, now that she knew nobody would be throwing her in the dungeon. "Whatever Their Majesties think is best."

Agnarr slowly nodded. "If that's what you both want."

"Yay!" Anna grabbed her hands excitedly, bouncing up and down. "Now we can be best friends! I used to be with Elsworth until he needed time to get over puberty."

This time, Agnarr laughed while his queen glared at him, as if telling him to scold her.

Her expression dropped when she mentioned Elsworth, but it was regained once more. "You can sleep in my room! I would have a roomie again! And we can do each other's hair and play in the snow and ride bicycles down the stairs -"

Agnarr caught the last part. "I'm sorry what -"

"C'mon, let's go play!" She dragged the girl behind her, who let herself. Despite this fiery little girl's energy, she had to admit, it was definitely cheerful.

Yeah, they would get along fine.

-

After the day, Y/n was instructed to go into Elsworth's room, introduce herself, and leave immediately. That was all.

A little apprehensively, she reached up and knocked thrice. Silence for a moment, then, "Go away, Anna..."

"Actually, it's Y/n. Your, um, lady-in-waiting?"

More silence. She was about to leave until she heard the door unhinge and a soft, "Enter..."

She did, met with a freezing cold room and a boy staring out his window. She saw only the back of his head covered in bleach blond and noticed how pale his hands were.

"Your Highness," she greeted a bit awkwardly. He turned, his eyes huge. He seemed to be repressing a smile upon seeing her, his hands folded neatly together.

"Hello, Miss...Y/n, was it?"

"Yes, erm..." She bounced on her feet with her hands behind her back. This was the horrible brother who pushed his baby sister away? He seemed sweet enough, although a little reserved. "Prince Elsworth, I've come to introduce myself." Curtsying deeply with her hands far out to her sides, she announced, "My name is Y/n L/n. I will be attending to you, Your Highness, so please, do not feel afraid to call on me whenever I am needed."

"Oh."

Well that was anticlimactic.

"Well...my first order is for you to keep my sister company." He tried to stand straight like he knew a prince should, but anxiety got the better of him and he began to slouch. "U - unless you don't like each other..."

"Oh, no, my prince, she has been most wonderful to be aquatinted with."

"Oh, good. I'm glad." But he looked the opposite of glad, glancing back out the window. "I want her to be happy with someone...a friend..."

She cautiously took a few steps in. "May I ask, my prince, why you don't spend time with her?"

He looked at the sill, biting his lip, then opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. "You may not."

A little surprised by his answer, but she nodded. "Yes, well, um...I should be going now. Lovely to meet you, Your Highness."

"Likewise."

She left, shutting the door, then heard it click shut. What a strange boy.

-

"Let's play in the snow!" Anna suggested one day, skipping around Y/n in the hallway.

"Okay, I'll just get my jacket and -"

But after was already running off to Elsworth's room.

"Wait, Anna, I don't think..." she began, stopping when Anna turned around, determined.

"It's snow! He loves snow!"

Once she reached the door, she called in the most innocent voice, "Elsworth?"

Knock knock knock-knock knock

Anna:
Do you wanna build a snowman?
C'mon, let's go and play

She sat at the door, as if defeated, then looked under.

Anna:
I never see you anymore
Come out the door
It's like you've gone away

-

She took out two dolls of her and Elsworth that the royal seamstress had made, letting Y/n play with the one of Elsworth - hers was still being sewn.

Anna:
We used to be best buddies
Even though I have her,
I wish you would tell me why

-

Anna:
Do you wanna build a snowman?

She put her lips up to the door.

Anna:
It doesn't hafta be a snowman

"Go away, Anna..."

Dejected, she walked away.

Anna:
Okay, bye...

"Are we doing this or what?" Y/n asked, already zipped up.

Anna smiled; at least she still had somebody to play with.

-

Elsworth watched their snowball fight with a small smile, leaning in to take a closer look at them. He jumped back when he began freezing the window.

-

"The gloves will help," Agnarr insisted, slipping them on his hands. "See? Conceal it."

"Don't feel it," he continued.

"Don't let it show."

-

Again and again, Anna would knock on Elsworth's for years, up into their adolescence. And there would be Y/n, watching her, feeling the envy of the princess towards her for getting to at least talk to him.

This day was unlike any other. Anna ran up and knocked as she always tried. Her pigtails were now braided.

Knock knock knock knock knock

-

Elsworth listened to Anna call for him, his back against the door. He looked at his hands and sighed. His lips parted and he began to whisper.

Elsworth:
Do you wanna build a snowman?
Or ride our bike around the halls?

-

In fact, Anna was balanced on the bike while Y/n drove it...promptly crashing down the stairs, Anna toppling into one of the decorative suits of armor and Y/n faceplanting.

Anna:
I think some company is overdue
I've started talking to the pictures on the walls

"Hang in there, Joan," she said to one, lying on a couch.

Anna, Elsworth:
It gets a little lonely

Anna:
All these empty rooms

-

Elsworth:
This empty room...

-

Anna:
Just watching the hours tick by...

Sprawled out in front of a clock, she clicked her tongue, eyes darting in time with the metronome.

-

Y/n knocked again on Elsworth's door, calling out that it was her. He unlocked it, letting her inside.

"Good morning, Your Highness," she said, placing the breakfast tray down. "Shall I get your outfit ready?"

Elsworth looked numbly out the window at the snow falling, his eyes glazed over. "There isn't a point..." he mumbled.

"Well, perhaps you'd like to come out today -"

"No."

The only thing Elsworth ever came out for were lessons, the toilet, and to see his parents. No matter how much Anna begged or Y/n coaxed, he would stay where he was.

As a teen, he had become very handsome. Y/n studied him a bit closer, taking notice.

"Of course, Your Highness." She unwittingly wrapped her arms around herself, not realizing the temperature was rapidly dropping. "I will see you this afternoon."

Once she was gone, he locked the door again and. Frustrated, he watched outside at Anna and Y/n playing together. He had missed so many years with them to protect them.

Letting out a cry of anguish, he picked up the nearest object - a chair - and threw it across the room, then threw himself against the wall, sinking down, sobbing loud enough for his parents to come rushing in. They had spent up to a few hours trying to calm him down.

"I'm scared!" he finally yelled in agony, backing away from them. "It's getting stronger!"

"Getting upset only makes it worse. Calm down." Agnarr reached out, but his son pulled back in a panic.

"No! Don't touch me!" Calmer, he added, "Please...I don't wanna hurt you..."

Both parents looked at him painfully, Iduna putting a hand on her husband's shoulder, a discussion of what needed to happen silently passing over them.

-

Anna slid through the hallways, coming across Elsworth's door. She glanced at it, but then walked away.

-

"See you in two weeks!" Anna pulled both of her parents into a warm hug.

-

"Goodbye, Your Majesties." Y/n curtsied, not looking up, so she was rather surprised when Iduna pulled her into a hug and felt Agnarr's hands wrap around her from behind. Relaxed, she melted into the hug, one arm around Iduna and the other squeezing Agnarr's arm.

-

Elsworth bowed to his parents, looking up painfully. "Do you have to go...?"

Both smiled at him, Agnarr reassuring confidently, "You'll be fine, Elsworth."

-

In two weeks, Y/n was dressing Anna for the funeral of the king and queen. The whole funeral, she stayed by her side, rubbing her back through the whole ceremony and letting her cry on her shoulder, only able to gaze numbly at the tombstones.

After the service, a curtain was drawn upon the portrait of the deceased monarchs.

As usual, Elsworth was notably absent.

-

Still in her mourning dress, Anna sullenly walked to Elsworth's door. Standing in front of it, she hesitated, but...

Knock knock knock

"Elsworth?"

Anna:
Please, I know you're in there...
People are asking where you've been
They say, "Have courage" and I'm trying to
We're right out here for you
Why can she, not I, go in...?

She slid down the door, voice beginning to break.

Anna:
We only have each other
It's now just us three
What are we gonna do?
...do you wanna build a snowman?

She leaned her head against the back of the door, tears falling out of her eyes.

-

Elsworth had also been sitting at the other side of the door, heartbroken. He had lost his sister and now his parents...

He could hear her perfectly, but knew that the door was soundproofed on his side.

Elsworth:
Do you wanna build a snowman...?

His head went to the door, as well, his eyes closed.

-

Anna, Elsworth:
Okay, bye...

-

He buried his head in his knees, sobs shaking his body, snow falling from the ceiling.

-

Knock knock knock

"Your...Your Highness?" Y/n called, fidgeting with her fingers. "May...may I come in?"

Nothing this time. Even after she waited for half a minute, nothing.

She sighed, ready to leave. Once she took a few steps, she heard the door unlock. She pushed it open, finding the prince sitting on his bed with his head pointed downward, a damp, balled handkerchief in his hands, resting on his lap. He looked up at her entrance, eyes and nose red.

"Your Highness -"

"Whatever it is, can it not wait, Miss L/n?"

"I only wanted to make sure -"

"I'm fine, Miss L/n."

For a few moments, only Elsworth's sniffling filled the room. Y/n hesitantly stepped forward. As she was over the prince, his head snapped up suddenly, eyes still full of tears, but now also anger.

"Do NOT touch me! Is that understood?!"

She jumped back. When Elsworth saw the fear in her eyes, his face scrunched up and he buried it in his handkerchief. "Do forgive me, please. I didn't mean to yell at you..."

Y/n stood at a good distance, but came a bit closer, careful not to touch him. "No, Your Highness, I...I shouldn't have done that. I apologize. You're distressed. I'll leave."

"No..." he mumbled, voice muffled in the handkerchief. "Stay...please...just don't...don't touch me..."

She sat at the edge of his bed, feeling useless as the prince continued to cry beside her, quietly keeping her distance.
