Chapter 9

Raynerof's eyes kept shifting at the darkness. Constantly hearing Pitch's laugh, Raynerof gripped his scythe tightly and whirled around in several directions. He let out a deep breath, closing his eyes and focused on the echoing sounds. He couldn't hear anything but the sounds of cool air gently moving around.

"Shame they left you."

Raynerof instantly pointed his staff to his right. He could sense that Pitch was on the other end.

Pitch smiled. He stepped forward and manipulated the darkness, allowing Raynerof to view Pitch. "I suppose Nightlight couldn't take everyone. But that just makes this more fun, doesn't it."

Rayner stood his ground.

"Then again, you and I have business to discuss." Pitch paused, but he took a risky step forward. "You know she's not the visiting type. I haven't seen her in quite some time. How is she?"

"Who?"

"Who else are we linked by? My daughter. The one you loved." Pitch smirked and rolled his eyes. "The one you still love."

Raynerof's breaths became unsteady as his heart raced. Every time she was mentioned, he recalled her eyes and smile, the things that always made his heart beat faster. Raynerof looked down at the end of his scythe. "I don't know. She left me and I haven't seen her in centuries."

Pitch frowned and began to slowly circle Raynerof. "Strange. I would've thought you two visited each other. Even if it was in secret."

Raynerof blinked, but he kept his eyes on Pitch. "What? Why?"

Pitch ignored Raynerof and grinned. "Maybe she really is in love with Father Sky."

Raynerof paused. His grip on his scythe loosened. "What?" A hook peirced into his shoulder and he was dragged down to the floor. He looked up at a mischieviously smiling Raven. He grunted as she pressed the hook deeper into his shoulder. Raynerof let out a loud cry as Raven stomped her foot onto the hook.

Pitch smirked and stood over Raynerof. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Raynerof. Let me guess. You thought you still had a chance with my daughter, but you felt horrible about the break up for centuries. You blamed yourself for everything because it was your fault. So when Nightingale comes along, you thought you could amends with her by taking Nightingale to the guardians. You thought that giving Nightingale proper dreams instead of loving darkness would win Norina over. You thought it would make MY daughter come running back to YOU."

Raynerof grunted and breathed heavily. "No. Emily Jane doesn't like the guardians. I just thought of the good of Nightingale."

Pitch blinked. "The good of Nightingale? Ha, I'm her father. I know what's best for her. And it's not you nor the guardians!"

Raynerof locked gazes with Pitch and smiled. "So you say Pitch. But I am Father Time for a reason. I've taking care of multiple children. There is a reason that you dislike me beyond the relationship I had with Emily."

Pitch snarled and raised his hand, spawning his scythe. "You're right. There is a reason I don't like you."

Raynerof gripped his own scythe a bit harder, he summoned his clock portal, and he was sucked into his blue clock face portal. Pitch's scythe hit the floor and he glared at where Raynerof once lied.

Raven glared at the hook covered in Raynerof's blood. "Shall we go after him, love?"

Pitch looked at Raven. "Let us care to Nightingale first."

"It's been a very, very long time old friend." North laughed as he patted the spectral boy's back. He grabbed the boy and gave him a loving squeeze. The spectral boy grinned during the tight embrace and light-headedly landed on his feet.

Jack raised a brow at the spectral boy. He stood beside Bunnymund. "Sorry, but what's his name again?"

Bunnymund grinned. "His name is Nightlight. He's a... He's a boy of action instead of words, I guess you could say. He's one of us. He protected kids for many centuries, even before it was our job."

North smiled and looked at Jack. "He was once the protector of Manny himself."

Nightlight looked down and nodded with a small smile.

Jack smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Nightlight."

Nightlight waved warmly at Jack.

Cupid took a few steps toward Nightlight. "But... why didn't you get Rayner out of there with us?"

Nightlight tilted his head to one side then the other. He raised a brow.

Cupid blinked. "You didn't know where he was?"

Nightlight shook his head and frowned. He let out a quick, deep breath.

Cupid sighed. "Well, he'll be alright I'm sure."

"We still have to go back." Bunnymund stepped towards the center of everyone's view. "Nightingale is still there and she's having a horrible time. Even Nightlight had a hard time staying in the darkness that long."

Jack's brows furrowed. "How do you know?"

Bunnymund looked gravely at Jack. "She wasn't laughing or crying while we were there. We would've heard her at some point that we were down there." He looked at the globe. "Something's definitely not right."

Jack looked at the globe. He recalled every second he could about what happened in the earth's core. "You're right. We all screamed and even then she didn't cry. There was no trace of her."

North began looking around the room. His eyes landed on the back of everyone's head, except one. "Where's Tooth?"

She flew faster and faster as her heart picked up pace. She recalled every word in the conversation she, Raynerof, and MiM had. She had to visit Damian's grave, now more than in the past. This time, unlike other times, she wasn't in a time of need. She was in need of him.

Toothiana paused, looking around and trying to find the path she had taken so many times before. Her eyes rapidly shifted like a bird's, but stopped when she noticed someone standing in a blue cloak standing on a building. She flew a bit closer and noticed it was Raynerof.

Her eyes widened and she flew down to him. "Raynerof, are you alright?"

Raynerof smiled and removed his hand from his shoulder. "Yes. I'm glad Cupid gave me an arrow a while ago." He laughed.

Toothiana let out a few small laughs. She let out a deep breath. "About Damian--"

"Go to his grave."

Toothiana paused and her eyes narrowed at Raynerof. "What's going on?"

"Remember that private chat we had with MiM?" Raynerof smiled.

Toothiana sighed. "Yes, but all he said was that he was closer than it seemed. I thought I could hear his voice when I was at his grave, but... it was all in my head I guess."

"Go to his grave and try to pay attention to the details of the grave, how soft the dirt is and such."

Toothiana looked down at her hands and nodded to herself.

Raynerof looked at the moon. He pulled out his scythe from his box and looked back at Toothiana.

"Raynerof, would you like to come with me? To see Damian's grave?"

"My business is here." He stared at the moon.

Toothiana nodded and took off to Damian's grave, watching the skies. She noticed a few clouds coming toward the city. As she flew closer to Damian's grave she had a feeling she felt centuries before. She shuddered at the thought of an omen and descended to Damian's grave. She rested on her knees and touched Damian's engraved name. She paused and recalled Raynerof's advice.

...how soft the dirt is...

She looked down and saw something glowing. She grabbed the item and removed the dirt. It was a pearl. Her eyes narrowed at the pearl. "Whose is this?"

"It's belongs to the most beautiful queen now."

Toothiana dropped the pearl and whirled around. "Damian!" She gasped instantly embraced him.

Damian fell onto his back and laughed.

Toothiana sat up. "What happened?" She paused and noticed his cloak. It looked like the night sky with beautiful scattered stars.

Damian sat up and grinned. "So I died."

Toothiana let out a small laugh. "I got that."

Damian nodded. "And a man in the moon told me that I was unselfish and childish, but that was a few of my best qualities. The best was that I'm like a grandfather when it comes to children, always keeping the belief alive and always believing. He said I was like a guardian of guardians." Damian smiled. "He told Father Time to take me to Grandfather Twilight. Grandfather Twilight told me he was old, too old. He loved his job, but there were days when he had trouble walking without pain. He asked Raynerof to rid of hold on his life link. He did so, but gave me his job before the last seven days of his life. Therefore," he bowed, "I am Grandfather Twilight, guardian of belief and rising of the moon."

Toothiana smiled and looked down at her hands. "That's great."

Damian blinked. "What's wrong?"

Toothiana lightly punched Damian's shoulder. "Why didn't you visit?" Her eyes widened. "Or did you forget me?"

Damian held Toothiana's hand and kissed it. "I did forget."

Toothiana paused.

Damian smiled and reached into his pocket and pulled out the golden tooth Toothiana gave him long ago. "But I had this to remind me."

Toothiana grinned and kissed Damian's cheek.

"As for visiting." Damian grinned, looking away bashfully. "I don't have the ability to fly, and I couldn't find you to ask you to take me to the palace."

Toothiana grinned and ruffled Damian's brown hair. "Well now you can. You can even--" Her eyes widened and she pushed Damian out of the way of a fearling.

Damian looked up and smirked. He pulled out a double-edged sword with a white glow and stabbed the fearling's chest. When Toothiana fell to the ground and looked at the sword, she noticed two small feathers hanging from its hilt. The fearling shattered and Damian placed the sword in its sheathe under his cloak.

Damian helped Toothiana up. "Are you alright?"

"You have a sword?"

Damian blinked. "Oh, yeah. It's the only reason I wear the cloak, so the kids won't see it."

"Tooth!" North swiftly landed the sleigh near them. He rushed towards them with Bunnymund. "Is everything okay here?"

Toothiana shook her head. "There was a fearling."

Bunnymund looked toward the center of the city. "And there's a storm of fearlings and nightmares on their way."

Jack flew toward them. "Pitch." Jack's eyes landed on Damian and his eyes narrowed. "Who's this?"

As Damian opened his mouth to speak, Toothiana stepped forward. "There's no time for that now."

There were multiple, loud screeches coming from the center of the city. Everyone looked at the center of the city and saw a wave of fearlings heading toward Raynerof.

Cupid landed near the group. "We have to help Rayner."
