Before
I'm lucky my books were all still in my bag, if they weren't I may have not moved quick enough. Even so, I just barely move fast enough to make it around the corner before two pairs of running feet enter the hedge maze.
I round another corner and wait, working hard to keep my breathing under control. It's just the two of them, but the fact that I know they're popular...that makes things worse. I hear them take the other turn and peek around the corner.
They really will get lost if they go that way...
The right thing to do here is to help them.
My feet make no move to walk. I can't stop my heart from pounding deafeningly in my ears.
How could I possibly keep myself together enough to talk to them?! Much less give them directions out of here!
My eyes close and I take multiple deep breaths.
You're going to be fine, Amaya. Calm down. You'll find a way.
As I open them again, I hear different voices. I peek around the corner again to see five people walking into the maze.
"-into the maze. What was he thinking?" The one in front, holding a clipboard and wielding glasses like a sword, sounds almost mad.
"Don't worry, we'll find them, right Tamaki?" The little one, a bunny in his hands, is sitting on top of someone's shoulders.
What is a kid- wait. There was that one guy... the one who liked sweets.
"Hm." The tall one makes an agreeable noise, following two startlingly orange heads.
So... we have the clipboard man, the gay twins, the sugar kid, and tall "Hm" man. That means Drama Queen took the feminine male with him into the maze.
I move back around the corner, an idea sparking into my head. But I have to be fast for it.
This time, my feet move. I circle around, making sure to avoid unnecessary turns, and come out on the opposite side of the maze.
Basically, I went the long way around to get to the other side instead of just crossing like a normal human being.
Let's hope this works.
I prefer to get only one of their attention, too many of them see me and I'll freeze or run. Neither situation good.
I take a moment to steel myself to turn the corner, needing to gather my wits to do this. I barely look around the edge.
"Where are we supposed to even go?" One of the twins asks, looking around.
"There are so many choices." The other says in the exact same tone right after.
Come on, surely one of them won't make a scene, right? What about you, "Hm" man?
I focus on the one that barely said anything. Hoping against all odds that he will be quiet if he spots me. As if on cue, his head turns slightly.
We make eye contact.
There's a moment whenever I freeze up. I know that I pale and my heart completely stops, a cold shadow wrapping around it so tight it's hard to breath.
I manage to lift a hand and mouth 'They went this way', before quickly shuffling back around the turn. My panic subsides a bit.
"Tamaki, why are we going this way?" A sweet young voice speaks up, closer than it was before.
I dash around the next point, knowing the only reason I didn't make a sound was that I removed my shoes before I had turned the corner.
"Hunch." Is all the deep voice responds with.
Oh God bless you, dude. Much bless.
I wait until I hear loud footsteps follow them, and then they all stop.
"I have his GPS on his phone up now, if you wait for a moment I can have their location." Clipboard says, but he's still following those two.
I inhale and peek around the corner again after waiting to make sure their attention would be elsewhere.
All except for him. He's looking around and I happen to show myself right as he's looking over here. I nod and then take off.
I'm not sure how long I can keep this up.
My legs are shaking, not to mention the rest of my body, and it feels like I'm going to be sick. But I wouldn't be able to let it go if I just let them have the chance of getting lost.
I can hear the other two now, talking amongst themselves.
Just one more turn, then I can go home.
I hear their footsteps and voices behind me. Even though they're farther than I probably know, it feels like they're breathing down my neck. As if I go any slower I'd get caught.
I make it to the turn and take the one opposite.
"You have some awfully good hunches, Mori." I can't tell which twin is talking here, or if they switched for the last part of the sentence. "Almost like you've been here before."
"Hm." Is his reply.
Crap. I might actually have to thank him...I can send a card, right?
My eyes look to them again. This time, he isn't looking my way. I can feel the chills slowly move up my back.
Come on, please don't fail me now.
My legs are shaking hard enough it's getting tricky to keep in this position, especially since the clipboard-guy is facing me, but his head is looking right.
He turns around and I'll have to actually explain myself. I can't be in that big of a spotlight!
I can't do this. Surely his gps will lead them the rest of the way. I've done this much, that's enough work! I deserve to go home!
He looks at me. Right before I can vanish for good, his attention is turned to me. I point to the opposite trail and move out of his sight faster than I thought was possible.
In fact, I'm racing down this trail faster than I thought I could've moved before now.
"Hey, anybody else hear that?" I almost drop dead at one of their voices. "Sounds like somebody running."
"Just animals." The deep voice saves me. Something about it just sets my frayed nerves at ease, making my panic drop away.
He won't tell them.
I definitely owe him a 'thank you' card.
I barely catch Clipboard's reply:
"Animals? There are no animals in the hedge maze."
"Don't be silly!" The sweet voice sounds like he's smiling, "I set bunnies in here on my first year!"
I never saw any of the bunnies on my way out.
