Before
"You promised!" The unexpected shout makes me jump, I look up from my book.
"This is a-" My reply is cut short.
"You promised me that you would go with me! This is the fourth time you've skipped on me, Amaya!" Daitan towers over me. I swear the room darkens around her, "What's your excuse this time?"
In a last effort, I glance to the librarian. However, since she's now used to Dai barging in yelling, she hasn't looked up from her romance novel.
There goes my back up.
I calmly set the bookmark in my book and sit up.
"Stop yelling at me." I match her look, "This is a library."
"What, am I not allowed to express myself?!" She slams her hands down in the table, "You stood me up!"
This is attracting attention.
Students are starting to look, curious as to what has their model all worked up no doubt.
Daitan is one of the many girls here talented and blessed with unimaginable beauty, combine that with her outgoing nature and she's the best. That's probably why she is so comfortable at this 'Host Club', a group of seven males who are also blessed with beauty.
And why I'm not going.
She has the perfect little curls in her shoulder-length scarlet hair, I have plain straight black hair down to my waist. Her skin looks like freshly melted caramel without a single sign of acne, I'm stuck with practically glowing pale skin and an annoying outbreak of acne almost every day. Her eyes are swirling orbs of welcoming hot chocolate that will burn you if you get too close, while mine look like the lawn mower got stuck in water. Her frame is the perfect hour-glass petite form, and while many tell me I have the same type, I don't think my stomach quite got the memo. And-for my own sanity-let's not go into how perfect her sense in fashion is. She makes the yellow dresses look stylish with her own flare... I'm the ugly dandelion weed nobody wants. It's almost like she's the automatic vacuum everyone loves, and I'm the forgotten rag in the corner.
"Daitan, really, please just sit down and-" Again my plea is interrupted.
"If you do not go with me to the Host Club, I will find a way to make them come to you. Promise." As she turns and begins to walk away from me, she adds over her shoulder, "And it will be much worse than you simply going with me." I watch her until she turns out of the library, and then face plant the table.
Why does she have to be so difficult?
I let out a small sigh and pick up my book again, intent on reading for the rest of my break. But it doesn't matter how heated the book gets, I can't seem to focus on it. I finally put it back down whenever I have to read the same page nine times and still don't know what's going on.
Maybe I should go with her. I mean, she's there almost every time the door opens and the last one to leave as they close, so it can't be too hard to be there whenever she is, right? Then I can suffer and get it over with.
I slide the book into my bag and walk out the back door, already too many have taken an interest about Daitan talking to-and I quote-a "nerd" such as myself.
I hear three pairs of high heels clicking behind me and feel my heart sink.
I took the back and still didn't quite avoid all of them. Great.
My pace quickens. So does theirs. I look down and follow my feet to the woods, knowing that's a short cut to the hedge maze. I might be able to loose them in there...or get lost myself. As a bonus, not many people are out today, so I can reach it without having to deal with a large crowd.
The grass muffles our steps as the group of three maintain their course.
Too bad these trees are so far apart, could've tried to loose them in here.
A twig snaps in front of me and I look up. My hope of getting to the hedge maze quietly is dashed.
It's just my luck that a group of people is out and about right now. I don't know how I didn't hear them before since one of them is going full out drama queen mode. Something about "hide and seek", but I don't pay much attention. I detour around them and continue on my path.
"Wait, is that the Host Club?" An excited whisper reaches me. I turn to look at the group.
Seven of them. All decently good looking.
I narrow my eyes at a smaller one, ignoring the one with the bunny rabbit.
Wait, isn't that...? No. That's insane. I'm...Im seeing things.
"Where did she go?" Another whisper, more annoyed than the first. I realize there is a tree between me and the three, but it won't be good enough cover for too long.
Please stay with your precious host club, I really don't want to have to go home late. Please?
There is a sad whine as two of them pull the third one along. I catch a glimpse of all of them.
Two brunettes and a blonde.
Then move on. I enter the hedge maze without slowing down, my heart racing in my ears.
Daitan, why did you have to make such a scene?
A smile comes to my face as I hear the silence around me. No people. Just me and hedge maze.
Looks like they chickened out after all.
I feel myself being able to breathe again as I sit down on one of the benches. Very tense muscles relaxing.
I wonder what would've happened if they had caught up to me. Nothing good, I know, but what exactly.
"Come on, Haruhi!" The sudden shout makes me jump. "They won't find us in here!" I recognize the voice of the drama queen from earlier.
What the hell is he doing in here? He'll get lost!
