FROSTFIRE.

☯︎︎—FROSTFIRE.

❝ some  say the world will end  in
fire,  some  say in ice. from  what
i've tasted of  desire, i  hold with
those      who       favour fire.

☯︎︎—INTRODUCING. . .
( the gaang! )

CRYSTAL,
the fire.

❝ i feel like a candle frozen mid-melt. everything smells like burnt toast and
my sweat tastes like eggs. oh, maybe
i'm dying! ❞

SOKKA,
the frost.

❝ criss, if you die, i will eat momo for
breakfast. you can't leave me with these
people, they're crazy!

KASUMI,
the mist.

❝ geez, zuko! what's the big deal! we just
go in there, find the avatar, and boom
boom woosh, fire!

ZUKO,
the flame.

❝ it's not that simple! you can't boom
boom woosh, fire! if anything it's woosh
boom boom, fire! what, were you born
yesterday? ❞

PEARL,
the clouds.

❝ if i could fly, i think i'd float far away
into the stars and live on a nice little
planet. and i would never, ever come
back. ❞

KATARA,
the rain.

❝ if you ever learn how to do that, could
you take me with you? i'm kind of sick
of the material world. ❞

☯︎︎

CRYSTAL'S NAME WAS painful and ironic for a number of reasons. At first glance, she looked like any other member of the water tribe—bundled up in a thick blue parka, swaddled to the brim with ice and snow. But beneath the surface, there was a sharp, flaring pain in her heart. She was a product of a very unusual thing—the tragic love between a waterbender and a firebender. A love so unusual that it left Crystal abandoned and despondent, dying for just one place she could fit in.

AT FIVE YEARS old, Crystal watched her mother flee her father in a heartbroken fit of fear. That was when she first learned that comfort wasn't such an easy commodity. The Fire Nation would never accept an illegitimate child, and no other Nation would willingly let in the enemy—no matter how sick she or her mother was. So Crystal had to decide who she wanted to be. She had to pick and choose which parts of herself to cherish, and which parts she would give up and hide deep within her soul forever.

THAT LED HER and her mother to the Southern Water Tribe, where her mother had grown up. A place where Crystal would be cold for the rest of her life. After Mother passed, as all mothers do (hers earlier than others), it was just her in this chilly world alone, with her friend Katara and Katara's brother, Sokka—the only person in the universe who liked sharing Crystal's warmth. It was an unfortunate, lonely life for somebody like her, but long days fishing, sharing snacks, and bickering with her friends kept her as grounded as she could.

KASUMI, ON THE other hand, was way past grounded. She was of a very prestigious Fire Nation nobility, with her father on the way to governing some of the Nation's most notable conquests. Her father, Ukano, and Lord Ozai, the ruler of the Fire Nation, had been at each other's throats and services as long as she could remember. They used to have an odd, on-and-off friendship that was both beneficial and dangerous. Just like their children.

WHEN ZUKO WAS exiled, Kasumi was a little more than ecstatic. They'd butted heads ever since they were kids. Kasumi never failed to instigate him, and Zuko almost always lost his cool. So she was a lot more than infuriated when Ukano sent her to join the stubborn prince a year and a half later on a whim. His eldest daughter, Mai, was to stay with him and be the best daughter the Fire Nation had ever seen—while Kasumi and Zuko strangled each other to death on the other side of the world. Her father's reasoning was simple: Kasumi was there to keep tabs on Zuko, Zuko was there to find the Avatar. Easy-peasy, right?

WRONG. KASUMI AND Zuko were the spitting images of each other, constantly bickering, dueling, and finding new ways to emotionally and verbally torture each other. They'd singe each other's robes, pin each other to walls, and throw anything and everything they could find (that one was mostly Zuko). And although both their families had turned their backs on them, they refused to believe they shared any kind of pain. So ship after ship, year after year, dead end after dead end, the fires between them continued to burn.

UNLIKE KASUMI, ONE person who longed to be on their travels around the world was Pearl, an experienced healer and an old aquaintance. She'd hated living in the Fire Nation her whole life, so she took any and every excuse she could to leave it. Surrounded by the crudest people known to man, her porcelain heart and light feet were mocked constantly. Her only real friend was a bubbly gymnast named Ty Lee, a girl not so different from herself. So when Ty Lee went off to join the circus, Pearl was stuck in a Nation that punished her for existing every day of her life.

THE PERFECT GETAWAY opportunity arised when her step-father, Commander Zhao was tasked with his own personal Avatar mission after he decided the exiled Prince Zuko took too long to act. After careful consideration he brought his peaceful, generous daughter with him to make her. . . well, not that.

ZHAO WAS TRYING his best to breed Pearl to be come a vicious, honourable woman of the Fire Nation. To uphold his values and his thirst for power. Instead, she was his biggest, most frustrating challenge on his way up to glory—a daughter who contradicted everything he stood for merely by existing. A daughter who was forced to face the fury in his heart every single day. A daughter who had secrets so abnormal and so heavy that if her step-father ever found out, he'd drown her on the spot.

WHEN CRYSTAL AND her friends find a boy encased in ice, all three girls are thrown into the battle of their lives. Kasumi and Zuko are fighting fiercer than ever for the pride they'd do anything to protect. Sokka and Crystal slip further into each other's arms, clinging to the comfort they'd sought their entire lives. And Pearl is slowly but surely falling for the beautiful waterbending girl her Nation is supposed to destroy, fighting her father's flames in a battle she may not win.

THE AVATAR HAS returned. So bring the frost, and bring the fire, because not everyone can come out unscathed. And there will be no winner without the heat and chill of sacrifice.

❝ but if it had to perish twice,
i think i know enough of hate
to say that for destruction ice is
also great and would suffice.

DISCLAIMERS. . .
this book is mine, all of my original characters/plot lines belong to me. if anybody tries to steal it, i will straight-up waterbend your ass. however, i do not own a:tla. this book deals with themes such as abuse, death, and homophobia. there will be violence, awful parenting, and way too many line breaks.

but it's FINALLY here!! welcome to Frostfire,
the longest, most cluttered book i've ever published! i've been planning this for like 4 months and i literally don't sleep so i'm really nervous about putting this out because i spent wayy too much time on this,, like no book should take this much effort

i'm still really excited for it, so thank you for taking the time to read! i promise you won't be disappointed this is all kinds of wack and i'm writing to (hopefully) the best of my ability!

a rundown: sokka and crystal serve besties to lovers, zuko and kasumi give us enemies to lovers, and katara and pearl give us a gay poetic forbidden romance i've cried way too many times over!! they all have angst and are painfully slow-burn so have fun

i love all my girls dearly and i've worked very hard on them and their relationships, so i hope you like them too—they're all very essential to the narrative and to each other in time. i seriously can't believe i'm so indecisive that a cartoon from 2005 made me fall in love with every single character at the same time so i had to make three love stories??? i'm a whore

a couple notes: i believe mai was fifteen/sixteen in the original show, but she is kasumi's older sister, so in this version she's been aged up to seventeen! and suki and mai were criminally underused and did not get the screentime they deserved, so since they're two of my favourite characters, they will be in this book a lot more because i'm in love with them <3 also there is a lot of appa in this fic appa nation come get y'all juice
