Part 2
As it turned out, the guy who had stopped the fight was Christopher Pike. A captain in StarFleet and it just so happened he knew who my dad was. In fact they had been close. My father was always something of a distant memory in my mind. Not even that since I never met him.
This man had a friendly aura, the kind of aura that a father would exude. Something I was obviously not used to. Like I said before, my step father and I were never close to begin with. A part of that is my fault but he is also just an ass hole with nice cars.
" You know I almost didn't believe the bartender when he told me who you were?" Pike began and I held a ice to my face as well as bloody tissues. My face was sore from the fight as now the adrenaline was gone but the injuries were avidly there. And boy could those Sulzarions hit hard for only having four fingers on each hand.
" And who exactly am I then sir?" I asked rubbing the ice over my cheek. I had been spoken to by quite a few starfleet members and each told me my father was a hero. I knew that and admired him for it. But I never was really sure if I was to follow his footsteps. I liked the thought of exploring space. It was the final frontier and all but was it the right place for me?
" Your father's daughter" Pike said with a smile looking at me with his blue eyes. "For my dissertation, I was assigned the U.S.S. Kelvin. Something I admired about your dad... he didn't believe in no-win scenarios" Pike explained and I nodded looking down.
" Well he learned his lesson" I noted grabbing a new tissue for my nose that felt like it had been kicked in by a horse. Pike shrugged " Depends on how you define winning. You're here, aren't you?" Pike said. My father had saved my life and my mothers. I didn't say anything in reply as he looked at me warmly.
"That instinct to leap without looking-- that was his nature, too. And in my opinion it's something Starfleet has lost. We're admirable, respectable. But overly-disciplined" Pike continued and I snorted. Overly displayed was the last thing I was. Where was this guy exactly going with this?
"Those cadets you took on, they'll make competent officers -- but you can bet your ass they'll run home to momma the minute they're looking down the barrel of a Klingon phaser cannon" Pike said and then paused for a second. " Why are you talking to me about this?" I asked moving my ice to underneath my left eye. I crossed my legs underneath the table analyzing his facial features and body language. All of which were sincere and honest.
"I looked up your file while you were drooling on the floor. Your aptitude tests were off the charts-- what is it, d'you like being the only Genius Level repeat-offender in the midwest?" Pike asked and this caused me to grin. Genius level? Maybe a bit of a stretch but I had finished in like the top 5 percent of my class. But an office job never would have worked out for me.
" Maybe I like it that way" I replied with a shrug absently. No one had really ever asked me that before, gotten that deep. "So your daddy dies... you can settle for a less-than-ordinary life" Pike began once more and then paused a beat. "Or do you feel like you're meant for something better? Something special?" Pike asked and I didn't meet his gaze that time. I thought deeply on that one, was my life limited to bar fights and lazy afternoons? He really hit a nerve there and he knew it too.
However, I didn't let it show for long as I looked back up at him trying to play it off with a little smirk. " Come to think of it, I do want to feel special. You know what? I'm going to start a book clu- Enlist in Starfleet" Pike interjected and both my brows rose at this order. Starfleet?
" Enlist?. You must be way down on your recruiting quota for the month" I said chuckling as I set down my tissues now that my nose had stopped seeping blood. "If you're half of what your father was, Jailee, Starfleet could use you. You could be an officer in four years, have your own ship in eight" Pike enticed. My own ship? Now that really was something special. I looked at him as he knew he had long past peaked my interest.
But I stood up after that grabbing my jacket abstinently. However there were several many things running over my brain as we finished our conversation. " Are we good? Can I go?" I asked putting my warm jacket on that had once been my mothers. It still smelt like her almond cherry perfume.
Pike stood up as well looking at me seriously "Riverside shipyard. Shuttle for new recruits leave at 0800 tomorrow" Pike informed me and I made a mental nor before turning towards the door. "Your father was Captain of a Starship. For twelve minutes and saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better" Pike said causing me to stop and then he walked away straight through the doors. I stood there for a minute thinking of his words. I had never really wondered what my father would have wanted for me to do in life.
And I left that bar knowing that I couldn't turn down a dare.
Next morning
I woke up bright and early with a new stir in my soul. After that talk with Pike at the bar I felt like my horizon had suddenly been expanded. There was a hope in his words that had spurred me on. While I wasn't entirely sure if it would go the way I wanted I figured it was better than hanging out in bars the rest of my life. A change in scenery might be good for me.
I sped down a long road on my motorbike with my blonde hair whipping all around my face wildly as I went towards the Riverside Shipyard. It was exactly what the name said it was. A giant shipyard beside a long river. But Not just any ships, the soon to be StarFleet ships. The ones that I would soon hope to be a captain of. I stopped my spokeless motorbike right in front of a skeletal frame of a new ship marked as the U.S.S. Enterprise. Many workers in neon half jackets were bustling around the ship as they slowly but surely made it fit for space travel. It was truly magnificent to look upon.
Just 30 yards away there were five or six shuttles with numerous people boarding. The majority wore clean StarFleet uniforms but some, similar to me just wore day's clothes as they sought a possible future. Each had the goal of becoming a member of StarFleet in the years to come. I personally wanted to be more than a member, I wanted to be a captain. My dad would be proud of that right?
I could see a familiar grey uniform in the fringe of things as I pulled the electronic key card out of my bike cutting the engine off." Nice bike" One construction man said with a head lamp on and I smirked. " All yours buddy" I said tossing him the key card and a look of surprise hit his features. " Thanks" he mumbled looking down at the key as if it was to good to be true. Seeing as I wouldn't be needing it anymore what was the point of keeping it. BesideS, I had taken it from my stepdads stock two years ago.
Pike looked at me with a partially surprised grin on his face as he stood tall in his grey uniform. I smirked at him "Four years? I'll do it in three" I said and he chuckled as I walked past into one of the mini shuttles. I walked slowly down the crowded shuttle and saw the three Sulzarions from the night before. Not even they could spoil my good mood and I issued a friendly smile " At ease ladies" I said with light sarcasm while snapping of a mocking salute. The one from yesterday who had been the brother of Jarex glared but had evidently removed her eyeliner. Thank goodness she took the hint.
I sat in an empty seat with the seat beside me empty and went to buckled myself in. We were getting ready to take off when there seemed to be some sort of commotion in the front of the shuttle. I learned from my seat to see what was up. A short, squat female security officer was escorting a tall brunette man from out of the bathroom. "Are you people deaf? I told you I don't need a doctor, damnit! I AM A DOCTOR!" The man argued sounding very distressed. Some one is freaking out just a little bit. (SARCASM)
"You need to find a seat" The squat officer insisted gesturing to the rest of us that watched with interest at the display in front of us. The man looked down at her with wide eyes and ruffled brown hair. " I had a seat, in the bathroom! One with no windows. I suffer from aviophobia, meaning I fear dying in things that fly!" The distressed doctor continued as the flight officer sought to get him to take a seat.
" Sir for your safety please take a seat or else I'll make you sit down" The flight officer commanded sternly and the doctor seemed to finally give up. He walked begrudgingly down the aisle and decided to take the empty seat right next to me. I wasn't sure what to say but he looked at me with a bit of a crazed look " I may throw up on you" He said as he crossed his arms. Well that's fantastic.
" I think these things are safe" I claimed trying to comfort the obviously stressed man. He scoffed as he put the buckles on " Don't pander to me, kid: one tiny crack in the hull and our blood boils in thirteen seconds -- solar flare might crop up, cook us in our seats -- Hell, some of the damn passengers are blue. And wait'll you're sitting pretty with a case of Andorian shingle. See if your still so relaxed when your eyeballs are bleeding-- space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence" He explained with a very heavy country accent. He seemed just a little paranoid.
I blinked in response " I hate to break it to you, but StarFleet just so happenS to operate in space" I said sardonically and He sighed loudly. " Yeah, well my ex-wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce, I got nothing left but my bones. Leonard McCoy by the way" The man now known to me as Leonard added. Just his Bones huh?
" Jailee Kirk, good to meet you Bones" I replied with a smirk giving him his new nickname as the shuttle took of and Bones automatically clutched his stomach in nausea.
Thankfully, he didn't end up throwing up on me.
