Reputation
When Hiccup was but a boy he was faced with the most difficult decision he has ever had to make. Kill an innocent being as a means to fit in with his tribe or face banishment.
Hiccup couldn't see the glory in killing such a beautiful creature, especially one he had grown so attached to. So in the midst on the night under the cover of the winter snow, he left Berk on the back of his magnificent dragon.
That takes us to now. Hiccup hops from island to island under the name the 'dragon master'. Not very humble but accurate none the less. He spends his days helping the dragons whilst simultaneously decimating hunter bases. His reputation proceeds him, the bounties on his head are endless. Yet none has ever seen the famed mercenaries face.
Well none except a certain winter spirit who has taken quite a liking to said dragon master. Due to his unfortunate curse he cannot be seen by mortals, therefore feels he is privileged enough to look out for the rider. He likes to think of himself as Hiccup's guardian angle. Again, not very humble but accurate beyond belief.

Jack soared across the sea of green, coating each leaf in a blanket of frost as he swept past. Wind whispered through the icy trees creating such a soft melody it could easily lull one to sleep. This island was the current residence of a certain dragon rider that has been plaguing the mind of the guardian for years.
Literally years. It annoyed Jack beyond belief. He often found himself scolding himself for falling in love with a mortal. Interaction between guardians and humans was forbidden anyway, not that Jack would stand a chance anyway. Being invisible makes it kind of impossible to make friends. He can't even touch a mortal thanks to the curse placed upon him. Not ideal circumstances for the guardian smitten by the dragon rider.
Speaking of, Jack stopped short as he heard a deafening cry coming from the blanket of green. He dove into the forest in search of the cause only to find something that made his heart near enough stop. Hiccup was curled into a ball, a huge gash ripped into his side. Toothless was unconscious, also with several cuts in his charcoal skin.
Jack cursed under his breath and scoured the trees for any signs of attackers. But they were long gone.
Jack rushed over to hiccup and began stitching together the wound on his side. All the while Hiccup slipped in and out of consciousness. Jack held his breath every time Hiccup opened his eyes, praying that he would see him. But there was never any indication the boy saw anything but forest.
Pushing his disappointment to the back of his mind, Jack set his mind on getting Hiccup to safety. No doubt the attackers will be back to finish the job. The spirit weaved a net out of frost and worked it under Hiccup, knowing he wouldn't be able to pick him up normally. Using all the strength he could muster, Jack hoisted the net of the ground and flew to the nearest settlement which had been abandoned for decades.
The occasional groan from the boy made Jack's stomach knot. He should have been there, watching over him as he always has. But no, the one time he decided to give his aching heart a break Hiccup goes and gets attacked.
Shadows of rotting buildings started to paint the forest floor as Jack got closer to the abandoned village. The only structures that still remained intact were a large well and a small hut glazed in frost. What? Jack had to stay somewhere during the summer months in which his talents were not of use. The spirit summoned a gust of wind that blew open a small hatch in the roof. With great caution Jack lowered the net into his home and proceeded to make Hiccup as comfortable as possible.
Looks like Jack will be sleeping on the floor for the time being.

Many hours later Jack was shaken from his daydreaming by several sobs. He jumped up and rushed to Hiccups bedside only your find the boy in a deep sleep with tears pouring down his cheeks.
Nightmares.
Jack knew the feeling all to well. His heart shattered as he could think of no way to comfort Hiccup given his invisibility. Turns out he didn't need to as Hiccup's eyes shot open. He pushed himself up against the headboard scanning the room in terror. His emerald eyes were blown wide with fear clearly unsettled by the unfamiliar setting.
"Where am I?" He whispered to himself. Jack dropped his head forcing back the flood of tears threatening to spill over. Hiccup couldn't see him.
"How did I get here? Where's- TOOTHLESS!" Hiccup scrambled to his feet and started for the door. What he didn't expect was a blinding pain in his side which brought him to his knees.
"Shit." Hiccup brought his hand away from the wound and grimaced at the glossy sheen of red that coated his palm.
"Allow me." Jack knelt down besides Hiccup and began sewing the wound shut once more. Hiccup was none the wiser, meaning his occasional movements were no help to Jack.
"All done. Don't rip it again or it won't heal." Jack felt stupid knowing Hiccup heard nothing. But there was a small comfort in talking at the boy. He has been dreaming of this moment for a while.
Hiccup scanned the room once more actually taking in the scene now that his fear has ebbed away. The lack of furniture suggested to the boy that this was not a permanent home - which to an extent is true since Jack rarely comes back here anymore. Hiccup noticed the tendrils of frost that snaked along the floor like an intricatly woven rug. The ice started to shift under his gaze creating a beautiful image of a Dragonrider atop his dragon.
"Oh my Thor what is happening? I must be seeing things." Hiccup muttered to himself, carefully hoisting himself up of the floor. Jack pouted at the very unenthusiastic response to his magic. Honestly the he could at least show some curiosity!
"I need to find toothless." Jack followed the boy down the rickety stair case. An idea sprang to mind and he started to create a tiny flurry in front of Hiccup.
"I am losing my mind. I must have hit my head pretty hard." Hiccup exclaimed, trying to bat what he thought was a hallucination away. Only the minute he touched the snow images flashed through his mind - Toothless unconscious in the clearing, a bloody gash across his leg.
"Go find him." Hiccup's head jerked slightly, but he didn't waste a second after the vision ended. He ran from the house leaving the spirit to wallow in his self pity. Being invisible sucks.

"Toothless! Toothless!" A black blur came tumbling through the brush, landing on the rider full force. "Thank the gods you are safe bud, I thought I lost you."
Toothless gargled eyes filled with relief at his master's return. Hiccup scratched underneath the dragons chin making him flop to the floor.
"How's your leg bud?" Toothless lifted his leg, growling as the cut opened even more. "No no no don't move it! Keep still."
Hiccup started to gather various plants along with water collected in a large leaf. Carefully, Hiccup ground up the plants, using the water to create a paste. Toothless watched on, resting his head next to Hiccup's work.
"This is going to sting, but I promise it will help bud." With great caution, Hiccup applied the paste to his temperamental dragon's wound. Toothless growled in protest as the paste seeped into the cut, translucent against his matte scales.
"That wasn't so bad now was it?" With his good paw, Toothless batted Hiccup's chest toppling him over. "Now that was just uncalled for."
A soft breeze swept through the clearing carrying a melodic tune resembling laughter. Hiccup's head jerked up in alarm and he scanned the treeline for life. Jack just sighed from his branch that miraculously held firm.
"Of course he can't see me. Why would I ever expect otherwise."
"Who said that?"
Jack quite literally fell out of the tree. The noise caused Hiccup to rise to his feet clasping his flaming sword. His posture stiffened as he saw a blur of blue among the bushes.
"Come out."
"You can see me?" Jack questioned glued to the spot in shock.
"Yes I can see you. Now I suggest you come out before we make you."
"YOU CAN HEAR ME!"
Hiccup made an almost imperceptible single to Toothless and the dragon bounded over to the bushes. Terrified Jack flew up into the clearing, out of the dragons reach.
"Who are you?"
"How can you see me? What is going on? This shouldn't be happening? What. Is. Happening." Jack was on the brink of a mental breakdown, in turn creating a small flurry that circled the clearing.
Distracted Toothless began to bat at the silver snowflakes like a kitten.
"Woah calm down. What do you mean this shouldn't be happening? And how in Thor's name are you flying?"
The two boys stared at eachother for a second in confusion. The tension was so thixk you could cut it with a knife. Finally Jack started his descent and landed a few feet away from the Viking.
"My name's Jack Frost." Hiccup laughed shortly giving Jack an incredulous look. Although when he realised Jack was not joking he turned deadly serious.
"Jack frost as in the winter spirit? But I thought-"
"No one can see me. Yeah me too. You certainly haven't all those years." Jack muttered the last part to himself and Hiccup pretended that he didn't hear it.
"So this is a first for you. Well hi Jack I'm Hiccup."
"I know." Hiccup raised his eyebrow, tilting his head slightly to the left. "I mean I have heard of you. Your that runaway from Berk right? The chiefs son."
"Yep that's me. Hiccup the disappointment." Jack's face fell at that.
"I never said that. I think it's really brave what you did, not every has the guts to defy a chief. Let alone their own father. Besides you fly a dragon. That's badass."
Hiccup averted his eyes trying desperately not to blush at the compliment. He wasn't very used to praise.
"Thanks. So what does Jack Frost do when he isn't spreading winter across the archipelago."
"Oh you know, cause a little chaos on a certain annoying little island." It took a while for it to click but when it did Hiccup burst out laughing.
"I always knew that 9 months of snow wasn't normal. All that time it was you feeling havoc."
"Oh trust me the winters are far worse now. But they deserve it. Whenever I would go there I saw how the village treated you."
Hiccup couldn't bite back the blush anymore, but still kept his eyes trained to the floor.
"I didn't think that Jack Frost would be this mischievous."
"Well reputations are often wrong." Jack said with a knowing smirk, giving Hiccup a shameless once over.
"It seems they are."
Jack spent the rest of the day with Hiccup. Whilst he managed to convince himself that it was purely to check on his injuries, a tiny voice in the back of his mind knew that it was fear that kept him here. Fear that if he left Hiccup would cease to believe in him, chalking it up to fever induced dreams.
It was only when the chill of the night came rolling in that Jack knew he had to let Hiccup leave.
"You should get going. I don't want you getting ill out here. You injuries have barely healed."
Hiccup sighed inwardly and rose to his feet.
"Well until our paths cross again Jack Frost."
"Trust me they will."

Every story comes to an end. But not all endings are happy. Jack's fears came to pass and Hiccup failed to remember their encounter. Jack was invisible once more but he didn't feel alone.
He will always have the memory of the runaway dragon rider who's reputation proceeded him. The day his curse was broken for a fraction of time. A day he will never forget.
