Chapter Two
"Wynter, are you ready for this psychotic adventure?" Charlie asks.
"No, but it can be educational for us with of defense law firm." I tell her.
"My wolf has been jumpy all morning. She is giving me a headache." Liz groans rubbing her temples.
"Mine too. She seems anxious." Charlie says.
"Same. Block her out for now. Help with the pain." I tell her.
Charlie roars the engine to life and we head off to meet everyone on campus. I really wonder why my wolf is acting this way. She is normally calm and collected. Today though, that is not the case.
We arrive on campus to find that we are one of the first to arrive. We are about twenty minutes early. All three of us are still nervous but what can you do.
Finally, our professor arrives in a large bus to transport us to the prison. We get out of the car and I notice something off. There are only about ten of us together.
We are all omegas from the same pack.
"Professor, is anyone else showing up?" I ask.
"No Wynter. We had to have Alphas permissions for all packs. Each pack will visit different days." He tells me.
Still, that is very weird.
"Alright everyone, on the bus we have a couple educational days ahead of us." He shouts to our small group.
He is acting weirder than usual. Very chipper and happy. Professor Walker is usually cranky.
The bus ride is so far quiet. Charlie, Liz, and I sat at the very back of the bus. I was sitting in the single seat and Charlie and Liz were beside me in a double seat.
"I feel weird about this guys." Liz says.
"Me to. We must stick together in here." I tell them and they nod in response.
I watched out the window as we drove further north than any of us had ever been. I felt the bus's heater turn on under our feet. The green grass started to gather snow the farther we went.
Flowers were replaced by frozen bushes and trees started to become empty only filled with snow on their branches.
"Alright everyone, There is a box of heavy coats up here in the front seat. Make sure to find your size and take one when we leave the bus." The professor shouts.
I stepped outside the high security prison facility for Werewolves and Vampires and what I encountered was overwhelming. The air was thick and heavy, the humidity wrapping around me like a blanket. With every breath, I could almost taste the sulphur and salt of the sea, the smell of the damp soil and the cloying sweetness of the thick vegetation covered in snow.
The prison facility was located on the edge of a coastal island, one way in and one way out. The air was filled with the sound of the crashing waves against the rocks and the cawing of the crows that circled overhead. I took a few moments to just take in all the sights and smells, the entire atmosphere was oppressive.
The prison itself was a grim sight, its grey stone walls standing tall and imposing against the skyline. I could make out the barbed wire that lined the top of the walls, and the large watchtowers that were placed strategically along the perimeter. It was a stark reminder of the danger that lurked within.
The prison grounds were a strange mix of beauty and horror. The sprawling forests off the road in the prison, the grass as soft as velvet all covered in the snow making it look almost magical. But I could also make out the heavy steel doors that lined the walls, the barred windows and the armed guards that stalked the perimeter.
The most oppressive part of all was the smell. It was a mix of rotting flesh, fear and despair that hung in the air like a dark fog. It was enough to make me feel claustrophobic and my eyes began to water. I had to take a few moments to compose myself before I could continue.
The prison facility was also home to some of the most powerful and dangerous creatures in existence. I could feel their presence, a weight and a darkness that was almost tangible. The air was thick with their magic, a smell of smoke and incense that lingered in the air.
It was a stark reminder of the power and danger that lurked beyond those walls, and the fact that anything could happen.
As we approached the front gate there were several guards surrounding one single person. A woman. She was probably in her late forties. She stood tall and held a lot of authority here.
She was about five foot five. Short grey hair, pale white skin, her eyes were a golden color. She did not seem friendly at all.
"Hello ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to my prison, Frostbitten." She speaks with a darker tone.
"Rules to follow without exception. Rule number one: Never stray from the group unless escorted by a guard." She said causing me to raise my hand.
"Yes." She said.
"Why would a guard be escorting anyone away from the group?" I ask.
"Multiple reasons. It is not unusual being unmated to possibly find your mate. If that is the case we escort away to keep the detainee calm and under control. Also, if you are not feeling well a guard will escort you away for a moment. No matter where you go in her there will be guards escorting you at all times." She said mockingly.
"Back to the rules. Number two: Only allowed to speak to the prisoners during the interview times. Other than that no talking back to them. Number three: Never stare at the prisoners. It is a challenge and cause an uproar. Number four: Do exactly as you are told." The warden of the prison spoke.
"Now let us begin. As you see the Prison is a fortress. Impossible to break in or out. The walls are two feet thick of solid concrete with silver coatings. They have steel plating on the outsides of the concrete.
The razor wire you see surrounding the tops of the entire perimeter are made entirely of silver. Double wrapped, no one is getting over those.
Cameras, guards, and motion sensors surround the entire building twenty-four-seven. When motion sensors are triggered we have a highly intoxicating gas, wolfsbane, that is released. Vampires and Werewolves are both weakened by wolfsbane." The warden spoke as if she was proud of her accomplishments with this prison.
We walk into the prison. There are two guards on each side of the entry. There are another two guards on the inside. This part had the least people. Only workers and metal detectors like in a courthouse.
"Everyone listen carefully. Yes you are on a tour but this is a highly secured facility. All cellphones, money, jewelry in the totes. Any hair clips, bobby pins, and hair ties into the totes as well. Nothing metal, sharp, or technology wise may go past this point." She shouts.
We all gather our supplies. I put everything of mine in my purse and leave it in the tote. I have an eerie feeling so I decide to break the rules. I just no something is off. I can feel it in my gut.
"Now we are going to block G. That holds our less violent offenders. They are the criminals associated in the killings. Like the lookout, get away driver, assisted in clean up, those type of things." She informs us.
We walk through the hall as the warden scans her print over the cell door blocking off the hall to the block G. I look around and see that there is a guard in all four corners of the giant brick room. There are also security cameras in all four corners as well as in the middle on the ceiling.
"Each block has twenty prisoners held. Ten on each side. Except for the Tower. That only holds one. They normally wear muzzles to keep from biting while being delivered their daily three meals. This is the time we usually remove them to get three hours of fresh air a day." She states.
As we continue following in a straight line I run into a stiff frame. Bethany. She is an omega from my pack. She is quiet and stays to herself. She is staring straight to the right. Her eyes locked with one of the prisoners.
"MATE!" They say in unison.
"Guard." The warden says nodding and they come and escort Bethany down a different hallway.
Odd behavior. Where are they taking her?
'Charlie, Elizabeth. I have a bad feeling about this. We must stay together.' I mind link them.
I heard their agreements and I kept on moving.
Looking closely at each prisoner and I wasn't seeing deadly killers and crazy offenders. They looked drained and tired. My wolf continued to get more anxious the more we walked around this prison.
We visited the kitchen, mess hall, and the showers to see where inmates eat and bathe. In the mess hall they are chained to the table in silver with only enough movement to move their hands. But it did not make any sense.
The warden early said they feed them in the cells, so why have a mess hall?
"Alright everyone, we are headed to block C. Our deadly murders and vicious killers." The warden stated in an amused tone.
I looked around and it looked like our group was slowly shrinking. I definitely do not want to stay in the prison overnight.
Running my eyes over this cell block the prisoners looked as exhausted and just drained. Something is seriously not right in this place.
"Now we everyone we will be going up to the tower. One person at a time. That is where our most deadliest prisoner is held. The infamous Kane." The warden spoke.
One by one each person took their turn to see the world's deadliest creation. One problem no one came back down. I tried mind linking Charlie and Liz but nothing. That had me concerned.
"Come on ma'am. You are next." The guard said ushering me towards the stairs.
I felt like I was in a villainous Disney movie. The way the stairs spiraled up and seemed never ending.
The room was dim and small. I seen no bars indicating a cell. The warden was not in this room as I had previously thought.
The air up here was colder than the rest of the prison. I sniffed the air and I smelled a mixture of warm apple pie and caramel. It was mouth-watering. My wolf was on edge and seemed to be at the forefront of my mind keeping watch.
In the center of a room, I saw a man. He was on his knees with his head hanging low. He had on a thick like straight jacket. He was wrapped in silver chains that strapped him to the floor.
His hair was a dark sandy blonde. Short but a little longer on the top. His skin was tan from what I could see. I followed the guard to where I was standing directly in front of the man.
I gave the air another sniff and the smell was coming from him. Weird. It doesn't seem like they get the best care. So, probably not the best hygiene. He smells delicious though.
As I sniffed I heard him chuckle causing me to take a few steps back.
"Another one I see." I heard the man mumble.
His voice was deep and husky. Enchanting in my mind. He is a murderous wolf stop thinking these thoughts Wynter.
"That bitch just won't give up will she?" He said I presume to the guard.
"Never Kane now sniff." The guard says with a threatening tone.
Kane followed orders. He threw his head back and sniffed the air. He snapped his head to me with a dark smirk crossing his lips as the guard stood behind him.
Those eyes. Those black eyes. The same from my dream. I feel a snap go to place in my heart and I bite my tongue hard. I can taste a bit of blood in my mouth by forcing myself not to say what my entire being is begging me to at this point.
I just focus on his eyes. Those captivating pools of ink. The infamous Kane is my mate.
