Epilogue

"When did he gain consciousness?" I asked.

I walked as fast as my little legs could carry me down the hallway of SHIELD Headquarters. Agent Maria Hill, Fury's second in command, was walking next to me.

"An hour before Fury messaged you, the computers picked up signals from his brain. The nurses noted the rise and fall of his chest." Maria replied.

We walked into a room, Nick Fury was present, along with a doctor, two nurses, and another SHIELD agent, who I recognized to be Phil Coulson, standing by a hospital bed. Fury turned to face Maria and me, Coulson almost looked nervous when he saw that I entered the room.

"I came as soon as I could," I said to Fury. "I had just got home when you messaged me, and-" I stopped speaking when I saw the man laying on the bed.

He was not trapped in ice anymore, he was dry and dressed in khaki pants and a white shirt. He was asleep, but to see him was almost like I was back in the 1940s.

"He's in a deep sleep, we are waiting for him to wake up on his own." Fury explained.

"May I get a closer look at him?" I asked.

Fury nodded and I walked over to the hospital bed and looked down at Steve. He looked so out of place in the room, but he was so peaceful. I looked at Coulson, he was staring at Steve as though he was ripped out of a comic book. He glanced up at me.

"Sorry, it's just- seeing you both in the same room." He said, shaking his head and looking down. Classic super-fan Coulson.

"You should have seen the little boy at the store today," I said. I worked part-time from SHIELD at a small market. "He was buying a Captain America comic book, on the cover was a drawing of Steve alongside Bucky and I. He looked up at me, saw the white hair and his jaw dropped."

Coulson smiled softly and I looked back at Steve, then up at Fury.

"When do you think he'll wake?" I asked.

"We're not sure yet, but it should be happening soon." The doctor answered.

"How soon?" I asked.

"Not today, maybe tomorrow." The doctor said.

"I want to be present when he does," I said.

"We'll be sure of that." Fury replied.

"The problem is, how will he react to this? He doesn't know that he has slept for 70 years." Maria said. "We don't want him to go ballistic."

"We have a plan." Fury cut in. "When he wakes, we're going to make it look like he is still in the 1940s."

"Will it work?" I asked. "It won't be long before he realizes he isn't in his own time."

"We'll figure it out." Fury said.

I stood outside the door of Steve's makeshift 1940's hospital room. My foot tapped to keep myself from breathing out vapor. I pulled down on my white button-up shirt and Coulson spoke through my earpiece.

"He's up. Go ahead and enter."

I took in a deep breath and slowly turned the door knob. I pushed open the door and stepped in. I kept my eyes pointed downward, scared that I would break down the moment I saw him. I turned my head to close the door and as it shut, I heard him.

"Ellie?"

My heart pounded against my chest. I hadn't heard that voice in years. I pressed my lips into a thin line and shut my eyes. I opened them and took another breath to calm myself. I turned around and looked at him. He was scared alright. He sat on the edge of the bed, his hands gripped the mattress as he stared at me. He could tell something was off. Not just about the room, but about me.

"Hi, Steve," I said, giving a sad smile.

I stepped further into the room and Steve sat up, watching my every move. I walked to the small table on which sat a water pitcher and glass, and a radio playing the commentary for a baseball game. I turned off the radio and began pouring Steve a glass of water.

"Where are we?" Steve asked.

I glanced at him. "In a recovery room in New York." Steve scanned the room before his eyes fell upon me again. "Do you want some water?" I held up the glass.

"No," he said. I nodded slowly and set down the glass. "Ellie, come here."

I swallowed and approached the bed. Steve looked up at me, his brows raised and eyes serious. I forced out a smile and his lip twitched.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"You're not the same," he said.

I laughed as best I could through my anxiety. "Steve, what does that mean?"

His brows lowered on his forehead. "Ellie, where are we?"

My heart skipped a beat and I shook my head. "I'm not sure what you mean. We're in New York."

Steve's jaw clenched and he looked at the radio. "That baseball game, it's from May 1941... I was there, with Bucky." My stomach dropped and I blinked. "You would know that because we told you."

"I-" I began but the door behind me opened.

Two agents walked in and Steve took a step back. "Ellie, what's happening?"

I held my hand up to stop the agents. "Steve, listen-"

The agents pushed past me and went to grab Steve, but they were no match and he instantly threw them into the wall. The makeshift wall broke and Steve looked at me with wide eyes. My heart pounded and I stumbled over my words.

"Steve, I'm so sorry-" But it was too late, he was already running out of the room. "Goddammit!" I grabbed the radio on my belt and clicked the talk button.

"All agents, code 13!" My voice echoed throughout the building. "I repeat. All agents, code 13!"

"Ellie, go!" I heard Coulson over the comms.

I ran through the hole in the wall, pushed past double doors and ran down a hallway where agents ran down the hall as well, some of them on the ground. I had just caught a glimpse of Steve as he ran out of the building. I ran out onto the sidewalk were I saw him running down the middle of the street.

"Why is this familiar?" I asked myself before running after him on the sidewalk.

Steve ran out into time square, cars swerved to get out of his way, and one semi truck was coming in fast. I ran out in front of Steve and held out my hands. A wall of ice shot out and stopped the semi from hitting us. There were cars honking all around us and my heart pounded.

"Ellie, what's happening!?" I turned my head to look at him, he looked confused and scared.

Four black SUVs pulled up and Nick Fury stepped out of one. SHIELD agents circled around to keep the crowd back.

"At ease, soldier." He said to Steve, who turned to face him. Fury approached Steve, and I turned away from the semi. "Look, I'm sorry about that little show back there, but we thought it best to break it to you slowly."

"Break what?" Steve asked, his tone sharp and his chest heaved.

"Steve," I said and he looked at me. "You- it's been 70 years since the war ended. You've been asleep in ice."

Steve looked around, he looked broken, and I didn't blame him. I put my hand on his arm. Steve turned his back against Fury, and looked up at the skyscrapers and bright signs and billboards.

"You gonna be okay?" Fury asked.

"Yeah." Steve turned his head. "Yeah, I just... I had a date."

I looked at Fury, the lump forming in my throat slowly. Steve turned and looked at me, he put his hands on my shoulders. Within a second his arms were wrapped around me and my face was buried in his chest, then his shoulders began to shake, and I knew what was happening. I turned my head and Steve bent down to hide his face in my shoulder.

"I know, I know." I soothed. "I was scared too."
