ERETRIA RESENTED ALPHAS. The reason why remained partly a mystery to her, but she hated the way they exerted their power over the weak. Granted, Tia was the daughter of an alpha, but that had just made her resent them even more.
This was no different. As the pack wolves pushed her into a car, and locked the doors, she scrunched her nose at the thought of meeting yet another Alpha who abused his power.
The drive was silent. Even Colton - who was too frustrated to even glance at his best friend - had no need to form words. The silence was unsettling for Tia, but she placed her hands in her lap and kept gazing forwards as streetlights surged past in an abundance of luminescence.
The city was alive. Humans walked through the streets like a plague, many drunk and already heading home at the late hour. Tia envied the way they could get drunk, although the idea didn't appeal to her all too much.
To the untrained eye, the city was bustling: a human hub. But to any supernatural creature, they knew of the true monsters lurking in the shadows. They knew of the vampires who slunk in alleyways, hoping a stray mortal would fall into their grasp so that they could feed. They knew of the witches, creating glamours to hide the supernatural deposits that any human would scream at if they set eye on it. And they knew of the werewolves. The werewolves that ruled the night, keeping the city at bay. The werewolves that would do anything for power.
The journey was short. After five minutes, the car rolled into the winding drive of a house located on the outskirts of the city. Here, the trees fought for light with reaching fingers of emerald leaves. In the night, their buds appeared colourless; empty. The moonlight forked the road with the shadow of branches.
Finally, the car pulled into a drive before a magnificent building. It was old, the exterior something deriving from the Victorian period. Pillars rose beside the door as Tia and Colton were hurried out of the door. She only had time to notice many of the lights were on before she was forced through the front door.
The interior - despite the beams and darkened wood lining the walls - was much more modern. The furniture appeared new, although Tia had no grasp on interior design and whether this house had a desired look or not.
The air stank of the putrid stench of wolves. Tia cursed when she realised she was in the pack house of the Obsidian pack.
"This way," the wolf who she had almost killed earlier glared, signalling for the pair to follow behind.
With nowhere to run, Tia stepped forward. Colton was hesitant to follow, but did so anyway.
They followed for a minute in silence, winding through wide corridors and past countless oak doors set equidistance from one another. Tia knew from her own pack house that each was a room homing one werewolf at the least.
Back at her pack house, she was lucky enough to have her own room on the top floor of the three-floored mansion. It was large, overlooking the expanse of forest situated by the exit to the dwelling. She loved the modern style, and her room was the only place she could think without being interrupted. Not to mention the sliding window that led to the roof: she'd always obsessed over the moon, particularly when it was full and all the males of the pack would enter the woods as humans and exit it as wolves.
But Tia hated that she couldn't shift. It made her weak, and being weak in the werewolf world was a death sentence.
Finally, after one flight of magnificent stairs, the pack wolves knocked on a large wooden door - it was much grander than any other door that Tia had seen in the building.
"Come in," a masculine voice invited from the other side of the room. Tia didn't need to have superhuman hearing to hear that he was young.
Two of the pack wolves pushed Tia and Colton into the room harshly, before quickly following behind. Tia scowled, crossing her arms over her chest as her mouth opened in shock at the sight of the beautiful room before her.
The wall before her was sheer glass, gazing out onto a clearing where the moonlight streamed ominously onto the ground in a shroud of silver.
The room itself was an office, with modern decor, a hard evergreen desk covered in a spread of neatly organised papers either typed up or written in a neat font. The same font.
But it was the male before her that had captured Eretria's curious gaze. Before her stood whom she presumed to be the Alpha. He was slowly rising from his chair, the thumb and forefinger of his right hand pressing against the black cuff link of his tailored black suit. His hair was a cropped, ashen black, making his cobalt irises appear even more perceptive than they already did. The pigment reminded Tia of the ocean, on a stormy day. The male's face was chiselled, with defined cheekbones and sharp features that added to his good looks. Tia suddenly felt at unease being in the company such a good looking man.
"What is this?" The man enquired, his piercing eyes glazing over Colton's bruised appearance before shifting to Tia. She kept her face expressionless, hoping that he wouldn't recognise her.
A pack wolf exhaled. Tia cringed at the disruptive noise. "They were caught on our territory, Alpha." The only female in the room scrunched her nose up at the title. In fact, in two days her brother would become Alpha. Not that she gave a shit.
The Alpha pulled his face into a strange, thought-provoked expression. He glanced at Colton. "The pack rules are clear. Crossing our territory is a crime we intend to punish," he stated, as if bored. In the brilliant light, Tia could effortlessly spot the dark bags underlining his eyes. It made her glad to realise that he was not perfect.
The man then squinted at Eretria. The look was calculating, as if he recognised her. She couldn't help but curse under her breath. He might not recognise her instantly, but she definitely recognised him.
"Eretria, is it?" The man enquired with a flick of his fingers. The girl being addressed bit her tongue until the taste of blood exploded into her mouth like an uninvited plume.
Tia tightened her arms around her body, twitching to use her knife which was no longer in her possession. "What do you care?" She retorted bitterly. "It's my birthday; all I wanted was to go clubbing. Is that not allowed?"
The alpha walked around to the front of the desk. He wore matching trousers for his suit, his appearance strikingly smart compared to the other wolves placed under the name of his pack. "No," he snarled. "You break the rules. You face the consequences."
Tia huffed in frustration, her heart hammering in her chest at a heightened rate. No matter how calm her breathing was, it continued to soar. Of all ways this night could've gone, she hadn't expected it to turn out like this. She knew the rules of crossing territories, especially with the Obsidian Pack, but she had been restless. Excited.
"I'm sorry, bu-" Colton began, but the alpha raised a hand to stop his rambling.
"Quiet," he shouted, the words slicing apart Colton's pointless talk like a knife. His hand balled into a tight fist. "That's enough. You crossed my territory, you attacked my pack, and you come and talk to me like I'm a lowly omega. You will be punished."
Eretria gulped, but she was used to his typical Alpha rambling. She had grown used to her father's; one more was nothing she couldn't deal with.
Tia shot the man a poisoned smile. It snaked around her face like a vice. "We'd love to stay and face whatever pathetic punishment you have prepared for us," the Mexican teenager sneered. She could feel the spark of anger ignite her bones, growing into an excruciating acrimony towards the man's pack. She was no longer afraid. "But my brother is going to named as Alpha in two days, and there's no way in hell I'm missing that, Alpha." She spat the title.
She knew that as soon as her pack was informed of their imprisonment (if that was deemed to be the pair's punishment), they would be released. It was just a matter of time, even if being locked away in rotting jail cells did not appeal to her in the slightest.
The man clenched his jaw in anger, the beast within him gnawing away at his human side. But he had grown used to the feral animal encaged within his body. He had to control it, for the sake of his pack.
The male flicked his wrist in one swift movement. "Take them away, Jared," he stated. He clenched his teeth so tightly that they threatened to shatter. His fathomless eyes scraped over Tia's as she held her head high. He could see the cracks through her fearless façade. "I don't want to see them again."
