Chapter 9
"Come on, Sunny. Let's go recharge." I hear Sideswipe whining to his brother behind me.
"I'm not tired." Sunstreaker's husky voice speaks.
"Were you recharging while I was doing training?" Sideswipe asks.
"No." Sunstreaker is short with his response.
"Well, what were you doing?" The silver twin pushes.
"Learning about humans."
"Again? What is with this fascination all of a sudden? Your still not..." Sideswipe stops talking.
I can only assume he chose the conversation to become private. Probably speaking through the mind link I've heard they share. I only hope Sunstreaker keeps our conversation to himself. As well as the location. It's not a private spot, but I don't want anyone else showing up there. A part of me has claimed the cliff and I don't want to share it.
After a few minutes of their silence, I hear a grunt from Sunstreaker and them both skating off. Sideswipe must have finally convinced him to go recharge. It's closing in on midnight now. I'm surprised Sunstreaker stayed this whole time. I'm curious as to why he is watching me still. I never did give him the answers he wanted. Now that he knows that I lied, he will be even more determined to find out all the answers.
The night goes on and the only sound is typing of keys. There is the occasional footsteps of patrol or someone using the bathroom. Optimus rolled in around two am. He simply asked if we've seen anything. When he was told nothing, he transformed and drove out the hangar. I've heard he doesn't recharge very well and he will take early morning drives around base. There is a lot going on in the big guys head. I'm sure it would be difficult to sleep with the weight he must be carrying on his shoulders. I honestly feel bad for him.
0800 comes too quickly after that. The other half of my squad comes to relieve us. They look refreshed and ready to take on the day. I shut down my computer and start to leave to my room. I don't make it too far as Sunstreaker comes skidding around the corner. His wheels screech against the concrete. Most try to ignore it, but Sideswipe looks over at him from where he is training. Sunstreaker comes to a stop in front of me, not giving his brother the time of day. I stop short as his wheels get a little to close.
"Can I help you?" I ask, looking up at him.
He leans over and whispers, "Are you going?"
"To my room, yes." I answer. I know exactly what he is asking, but I find the whole situation humorous.
He scoffs and crosses his arms. "You know what I mean."
"And you don't need to know." I reply. I then try to maneuver around him, but he stays in front, blocking me. He's surprisingly quick on his wheels.
"You are." He states, acting like he knows me.
"Even if I am, please don't follow." I growl.
"What if I do?" His patience running thin. I can see a scowl starting to form.
"I asked you to let it go." I remind him, raising my eyebrow.
He brings his face as close to mine as he can without falling over and whispers, "I'm not going too."
I huff in response. There is no point in arguing with him. I sent him a glare and proceed to leave. He doesn't follow, but he skates out of the hangar. I can hear him transform and it sends a tingle down my spine. Then the sound of wheels hitting the ground and the engine revving high as he takes off. It makes me contemplate going out to the cliff. I know he is going to be there. There is something, maybe a feeling, telling me I should go. A part of me feels Sunstreaker needs this more than I do. I get to my room and don't waste time. In a second, I'm over the cliff. I take a look around. The sun is just starting to get high, and I see it bounce off something shiny a few yards out. The golden gleam gets closer, and I know he saw me this time.
"I knew I should have waited." I mumble to myself.
Though as I think about it, he may have seen me yesterday, but he didn't say anything about it. He seems like the kind of bot who would definitely say something. So, maybe he didn't see anything. I will find out soon enough. I see him rolling up out of my peripheral. I sit down with my back against the tree, waiting for him. He transforms and skates the rest of the way to me. I look over the ocean, waiting for him to speak.
"I knew you could teleport, but seeing it again only reaffirmed it." he says quietly, slowly coming to a stop near the edge.
"You haven't told your bother, have you?" I ask, looking down at my hands as I clasp them together and twiddle my thumbs.
"No, but he doesn't like that I'm keeping things from him. I've dropped the thing about you, but he doesn't like how much I've obsessed over humans." He explains, optics looking over the ocean for a moment, they close and his shoulders rise and fall with the waves.
"Do you obsess over things a lot?" Another question as I look up at him slightly.
"Not usually, unless I know I'm right. Which is often." He says smirking down at me.
"You must be the brains and Sideswipe got the looks." I couldn't help but joke.
The scowl is back, aimed right at me. I'm sure if his eye could shoot laser they would. I casually look away, avoiding his eye contact.
"I got the brains and the looks. All he got was ways to get us in trouble." His husky voice lowered to almost a growl.
I chuckle, "Sounds like you two make quite a team."
"We do. We always have. Us being separated was probably the hardest thing we've ever dealt with." He admits. I can hear the sadness in his tone.
"May I ask why you were separated?" I look up at him. He's looking downward, then looks up at the ocean before speaking.
"I got sent on a secret mission. On a ship with a few other Autobots. Optimus wanted Sideswipe to stay back and help battle on what was left of Cybertron." He explains carefully.
"If you two were better together, why didn't Sideswipe go with you?" I ask. I get up and move closer to the edge of the cliff, next to him.
"Like I said he can get us in trouble. This mission couldn't have any problems. Sometimes it's hard for him to take things seriously. So, it was better for him to stay behind. No matter how much it hurt." He says solemnly.
"I'm sorry it had to be that way. War makes us do things we don't want to do." I say, casually looking to the rocks below.
"What have you had to do? You seem to have a great life here. You don't even go into the battlefield." His voice rises, anger filtering through.
"My life isn't all sunshine and rainbows." I say gritting my teeth together.
"Enlighten me." He leans down, glaring at me.
"That is none of your business." I growl.
"Primus, what are you hiding?" He challenges.
"Even if I was, I wouldn't tell you." I get defensive. There is a lot that he doesn't need to know about. So much more than I want to remember, but now my new situation keeps it repeating in my mind every time I have lie awake on my rack waiting until then next time I'm on duty.
"Would you tell Sideswipe?" he asks, eyes staring daggers at me.
"Why do you care if I tell Sideswipe?" I ask, looking confused.
His mouth snaps shut. Like he isn't sure how to answer. That's when a light flicks in my head.
"You think I'm friends with Sideswipe." I implore, crossing my arms.
He stands back up tall, "Aren't you?"
"Not that I'm aware of. We talk every now and then, but I wouldn't say we're bff's." I point out.
"Well, he thinks otherwise." He states.
"What do you mean?" I wonder aloud. All the times I've been around Sideswipe and any conversations we've had, fill my mind.
"He's always talking about you. How he wants us to hang out together. Told me about your job. How you're the only human that actually talks to him like he's human. You don't treat him differently." He explains.
"I treat everyone the same. You guys may not be human, but you guys aren't that different from us. You still have emotion, language, self-awareness, vital signs. I mean besides the obvious, I consider you bots a similar species. Almost human like in some ways. So why would I treat your different?" I tell him.
"We are nothing alike. I don't have skin or gross organs inside my body." He starts to argue.
"But you do bleed. You have your own type of organs. You may not have skin, but your metal is like a skin." I argue back.
"No!" He shouts, bringing a fist up. "We are not the same. We aren't stupid like your race is."
"Sunstreaker, I wasn't saying your race is stupid. Look, I don't want to argue with you." I attempt to calm him down.
"You're not even human. Why do you care anyway?" He snaps.
"I am human!" I snap back. My hands turning to fist.
"No, you're not. You can't be." He comes closer. "I know you're not." His voice almost a whisper.
"You don't know anything." I growl, taking a few steps forward.
"I think I know more than you want me to know." He countered. His voice now normal and its somehow more terrifying.
"And I think you need to back off." I sneer, closing in on his space, ready to fight if I need too.
"Fine. Keep lying to yourself." His servos go up and then he transforms and drives off, leaving me in another cloud of dust. This time I know it's on purpose.
