Chapter 25
This is the most peaceful I've ever seen Sunstreaker. For once, his processer isn't plaguing him with the pain and trauma I know he's endured. He's never talked about it, but I know it's there. You can see it in his optics. He's more human than he would ever admit. I only hope he learns to release that hurt he has built up. To finally let go and live. Not as a killing machine. To be more than that. My hand runs through his hair. Without waking, he snuggles closer to me, if that is even possible.
The sun is slowly beginning to rise. It's light, making my room start to glow oranges and yellows. I peek up slightly to my clock and notice it's almost 0630. I wonder when Sideswipe will wake. A part of me is worried he may freak out with both of us gone, but I have no way to contact him, and I can't leave without Sunstreaker moving. I am in a pickle. Maybe Sunstreaker left him a note. I lay there thinking of all the possibilities, all awhile I just start to feel the pair of eyes on me. If I wasn't weighed down, I may have jumped.
"Good morning." I smile, looking down at him.
"What were you thinking about?" He asks, a frown lay upon his delicate features.
"Many things. I've had a lot of time to think." I reply, but if he could, he frowns even more at my answer.
"What about right now?" The low growl he lets out vibrates through my chest.
"I am worried Sideswipe will be upset to find us both gone." I say honestly.
"I left him a note." He relaxes into me again. I barely realized he was tensed up.
"I'm assuming he will come here then once he wakes?" I ask.
"I have no doubt." He pauses and his eyes become distant for a moment. "Scratch that, he's on his way."
I start to get up, but Sunstreaker holds me back. "Let me go unlock the door."
"You don't need to. Even though we aren't ghosts. We can also pop into places with our holoforms." He says with a sly smile.
"Then why do you guys knock?" I can't hold back the shock from this new information.
"We do have some respect." He gives me an offended look and places a hand on his heart, as if I wounded him with my words. "Do you think so little of us?"
"You and Sideswipe don't exactly follow boundaries." I smirk.
"That hurts, Hart." He voices, then pushes me playfully.
"You guys are cuddling!" A hushed angry voice resonates around my room, "That's so not fair."
We both look up to Sideswipe who has his arms crossed and is clearly pouting. I try to hold back my laugh.
"I'm not sure how you'll fit but come on." I wave for him to come over.
A smile lights up on his face and he rushes over. He climbs on top of us, his head resting against my chest and his arms around both of us. Not sure this is what I meant, but it doesn't bother me. Perks of being a ghost. Though, Sunstreaker doesn't look comfortable at all. I almost feel sorry for him. Then again, he sighs and lets it happen.
"For a ghost, you are comfy." Sideswipe says contently and snuggles closer.
"Well, I'm holding myself together right now. I will need to get up soon though." I say, rubbing Sideswipe's back.
"Why? We can lay here all day." Sideswipe's voice is muffled against me.
"She needs to go to the cliff." Sunstreaker grunts out, answering for me.
"Can I come too?" Sideswipe looks up slightly to me, sounding hopeful.
"Yes, you can join." He smiles at my answer.
He puts his head back down and I continue to rub his back. We lay there in silence. Both boys close their eyes, taking in the comfort of the situation. I watch over them feeling content. I'm glad I can help them relax. Wish I could feel the same. I wish I could close my eyes and sleep along with them. If only my life could be normal. I snuggle with them a little longer. My energy slowly fading but it's worth it.
"Guy's, I need to go." I say weakly after thirty minutes.
"But I don't want to get up." Sideswipe mumbles.
"I'm not sure how much longer I can hold my form." The exhaustion showing in my voice.
"Come on Sides. Get up. Let's go to the cliff." Sunstreaker mutters, eyes still closed.
"Okay let's go." Sideswipe jumps up, his brother groaning from the sudden movement.
Sunstreaker slowly rolls over, practically falling off the bed. I try to hold back my laugh, unlike Sideswipe who lets it out no problem. Sunstreaker sends him a glare before getting up. I feel slightly relieved now that I don't need to keep holding together so tightly. It's my turn to get off the bed and I slide off onto my feet, both boys adjusting their shirts. Then they both turn to me.
"Race ya out there." I give them both a smirk.
"That's not..." They both start and come at me, but I vanish before they can finish.
I reappear out on the cliff, laughter drifting from me. This might be more fun than I thought it would be. I will get a few moments of silence. I'm sure it won't take long for the twins to catch up to me. The morning breeze whips through me. The tide hitting the shore. I haven't been out in a few days, and it feels so good. The tired feeling dissipating like the ocean mist in the heat of the sun. I close my eyes and take it all in.
About five minutes later, I can hear tires driving over gravel in the distance. The roaring of two powerful engines echoing against the trees. It brings a smile to my face. I look over from staring down at my rock formation and catch the sun gleaming of their metallic coats. Dust flies up behind them as they race towards me. A part of me should be afraid they may hit me; they are moving fast. Yet, I'm not worried at all. They come drifting to a stop behind me. Still close enough that the dirt and sand reaches me, covering me.
"Lovely." I mutter to myself, trying to shake it off.
They both transform and saunter over to me. Both laughing. The carefree looks on both their faces gives me reassurance that after I'm gone, they will be okay. I stop trying to get rid of the dirt and watch them walk over. The laughing slowly dies the closer they get. Sideswipe starts to take in the sight around him. His optics go wide, looking all around him.
"This place is beautiful. Just like Sunstreaker's painting." He whispers in awe.
He steps up to the edge next to me and gazes at the ocean. I can't help but watch the amazement. That is until his optics land on some rocks stacked up on themselves. His smile falls, turning into a frown. The sadness closing in upon his face. It makes my smile vanish as I see the realization hit him.
"Is that?" He utters.
"Yes." I answer all to quickly.
"Can I..." He pauses, heaving in air through his intake, "Can I see your body?"
"Sideswipe, I haven't seen my body since the day I buried it. Sunstreaker hasn't even seen it." I answer looking down at the very spot I fell too over a year ago.
"What if it's not there anymore?" He hesitates to ask.
"It is." I say confidently.
"How do you know?" I feel his optics on me now.
"I just know." I shrug, looking up at him.
"I'm sorry, Hart." He whispers low enough, I barely hear it.
"For what?" My eyes stay on him, confused now.
"That this happened to you. That no one was here to save you." He whimpers looking back down the cliff.
"It was my own fault, Sideswipe. Us soldiers aren't allowed out here and I broke the rules. The one rule I disobeyed and it's the one that killed me. No one knew about me coming out here." I pause for a second, "So, please don't apologize for my own mistake."
"This isn't fair." He mutters looking up at the sky.
Sunstreaker moves to his brother's side, opposite me. He sets a gentle servo on Sideswipe's shoulder. Sideswipe turns to look at him. It's silent all around us, besides the waves crashing against the shore. They seem to be having their own silent conversation. I wonder what he is telling him. Maybe he is trying to reassure him. Make him feel a little better about the situation. A small part of me is envious of their connection. I've always been alone. Never had anyone to share my happiness or struggles with. My siblings were so much younger than me. They have probably forgotten all about me by now.
"What's wrong Hart?" Asks Sunstreaker, his voice snapping me back and I realize I was zoning out.
"Nothing. Just thinking too hard." I say to him, not ready to let them know about my past.
"You can tell us. We are here for you. You don't have to struggle alone." Sideswipe crouched down low as he spoke to me. I feel he is trying hard to make up for me dying.
"I am very happy to have been able to meet you guys and get to know you both, but there are just some things I cannot discuss. Me being dead was one of them. But it was only a matter of time before someone figured it out. I'm glad it was you two." I explain sending them both a smile.
"Well, if you ever want to talk about it. We are here." Sideswipe acknowledges.
"Same to either of you." I glance at Sunstreaker and see a ping of guilt. We both know there is stuff he won't talk about either.
Sideswipe stands back up, his optics going back to the ocean. You can see his gears spinning rapidly in his mind as he processes all this information. I know they both want to know more about me, but it won't make me being dead any easier. I'm still dead. Only my soul has stayed behind. The voice I spoke with comes back in my mind. Telling me my purpose hasn't been fulfilled. Another part I need to keep secret. All it tells me is something bigger is coming. If only I knew what it was.
The three of us hang out on the ledge, staring out over the ocean. The breeze whispering past us. We are quiet. I'm waiting for more questions from Sideswipe, but they have yet to come. Maybe he just hasn't found the right way to ask. It's not like there is a wrong way. Sunstreaker never held back. He still doesn't. He has no problem speaking his mind. I can feel them both glancing at me every now and then. It feels like they are afraid they will lose me any second. Maybe I should tell them about the strange voice. Maybe it would ease their mind a bit to know will be here a little longer.
Our peace and quiet gets interrupted by sirens blaring from base. All three of us snap our heads in that direction.
"Hop in." Sunstreaker calls out to me as they both transform.
They start to speed off and I jump myself into Sunstreaker's passenger seat. The buckle wraps around me as his RPM's increase. The base coming into view rapidly. They drift to a stop right in front of the hangar. Sunstreaker opens his door and I slide out as he transforms. Soldiers are assembling, Autobots checking weapons. The sirens blaring a Decepticon attack.
