Chapter 2
Morning comes quicker than you'd think. The private besides me fights sleep. I have to nudge him awake every now and then. He gives a small apology every time. The next duty shows up right on time. Shift change is swift and easy, and we leave. My duty partner charges ahead of me. Probably looking forward to sleep. I continue to make my way slowly down the hall. Night duty gets the next day off, then back to regular work the day after that. I'll get to my room, eventually.
I get to the hangar and lean against the wall. The Autobots and soldiers are starting the morning training. Ironhide and Sideswipe going over weapon basics. Bumblebee and Mirage covering stealth. The triplets racing through speed and agility. Then I spot Optimus and his second lieutenant, Jazz, talking with the higher ups. Most likely going over battle strategies. I don't see Ratchet, but he is most likely in the medical bay. He doesn't care much for working with the soldiers or humans in general. Though that doesn't mean he won't help them if needed. I'm sure Wheeljack is in there with him, working on some new contraption. All accounted for, except Mudflap and Skids. They are probably causing trouble somewhere.
I stand there for a moment, watching them work. A few soldiers acknowledged me as they walk past. After a few minutes, I headed to my barracks room. I am lucky enough to have my own room. I'm sure one of these days I'll get a roommate, but for now I relish in the space. I look at my rack. It looks inviting, but that bed hasn't been slept on in ages. One of these days I'm hoping I'll crash. Sadly, I don't think that will happen. I walk over to the desk that sits next to the bed and I sit down. I pull open the drawer and take out a journal and pen. Then I start to write.
After an hour or so of writing, I close the journal and put everything away. Days like these are extremely boring. I debate going out to the cliff, but it's too early. I prefer going closer to sunset. So, I grab a book off my small bookcase, one that is overflowing with books, and grab one I've read a hundred times. I need something to occupy my mind.
Time flies by and I make an appearance outside my room. Making my way out of the hanger, passing the last of training. No one pays me any mind and I head out to the cliff. It's easy to not be seen around here. At least for me it is. Sometimes I feel as though I'm invisible. Though, I'm happy I don't draw attention to myself. It will hurt less when this is all over and we go our separate ways.
The wind blows gently through the grass and leaves. I feel it go straight through me. Taking my breath with it. Any thoughts I have are taken from me and leave me in bliss. I take a seat next to the old tree, leaning my back against it. The waves splash against the shore. A mist showering over me. I lean my head back and stare up at the sky. It's beginning to turn beautiful colors of pinks and purples with yellow and orange. I could watch this all the time.
I stare out over the ocean. The sun creeping closer to the bottom of it. Looking like it's about to fall in. I'm sure it would be a big splash, one that could wake me up from this nightmare I'm in, but sadly I'm very much awake. With a long sigh, I get up and walk to the edge. I gaze down at the small rock formation. With the tides, I'm surprised it's still standing. It brings a sad smile to my face. For no one will ever know it is there. I say my farewell and head back to base.
Not much is happening at base. Patrols are coming back, and most are heading to the mess hall or their rooms for the night. There are a few Autobots hanging out in the hanger. The ones getting back from patrol reporting in. Sideswipe and Mirage seem to be sparring. Until I hear a roar come from Sideswipe. I, along with everyone else, whip their heads around to look. Sideswipe throws a punch at Mirage. Mirage blocks his hit, making Sides only angrier. He moves to punch again, but Mirage uses his anger against him and hits him first.
"He's alive!" Sideswipe roars, sending his fist into Mirage.
"Give it a rest, Sideswipe. He's gone and good riddance." Mirage manages to duck and kicks out at him.
"Ahh!" Sideswipe rages.
His optics change to red, and he doesn't hold back as he sends blow after blow to Mirage. Anyone human near them runs away. Ironhide runs in grabbing Sideswipe, trying to pull him off his victim. Sideswipe seems to have a surge of strength and throws the weapon specialist off him. More bots rush in and try to stop Sideswipe. Mirage tries to stop the punches, his servos in front of his face, but they keep coming.
"Ratchet, subdue Sideswipe." I hear Optimus order.
Optimus shakes the floor as he storms over to the fight. He even has trouble grabbing ahold of the silver bot. Optimus grips the back of Sideswipes armor and yanks him back. Sideswipe tries to get Optimus to let go, but Ratchet is quick to sedate him. Thus, causing the frontliner to fall limp in Optimus's arms. I step forward, almost ready to run to him, to make sure he's okay, but I stop myself before I can push my other foot off the ground.
"What happened?" Optimus growls, sending a shiver through anyone left in the room.
The whole hangar is silent. Mirage is still on the ground. Ratchet nursing his wounds. Ironhide walks over, holding his arm.
"I didn't catch what they were arguing about, but it was over Sunstreaker. Mirage told Sideswipe he was gone and good riddance." Ironhide explains, through deep breaths.
"Whose Sunstreaker?" Major Lennox asks, looking over the downed speedster.
"Sunstreaker is Sideswipes split spark twin. He was lost to us centuries ago. We all assume he died during the war." Optimus foretold, "But if he is dead, Sideswipe should be as well."
"Sideswipe says he can still feel him sometimes. Maybe the feeling is becoming stronger?" Ratchet suggested, looking over his shoulder to Optimus.
"That would mean Sunstreaker is on his way to Earth. We must be prepared." Optimus warns, looking over everyone.
"Do we need to be worried? I've never seen Sideswipe go crazy like that. Not even in battle." Lennox wonders.
"Both Sideswipe and Sunstreaker have a haunted past. Sunstreaker was able to shield Sideswipe from most of the pain and torture, causing him to be, for simpler terms, hard to deal with. I do not know what he has had to endure while missing. For that, yes, we should be worried." Optimus looks over everyone as he speaks.
"Ratchet, once you are finished with Mirage. We will need to wake up Sideswipe and find out his side of the story." Optimus continues, then he starts heading out of the hangar. To, I'm assuming, the medical bay, "Mirage, I will talk to you when we are finished."
"Is Sunstreaker psycho or something?" Lennox clearly wanting to know more. Honestly, I want to know more as well.
"In a sense, yes. He also hates anything fleshy or better than him. He will hate humans. He's great on the battlefield, but sometimes lets his ego get the better of him. I imagine if he gets here, he won't be in the best of moods." Ratchet explains as he finishes up on Mirage.
"Your good Mirage. Get some energon and sleep the rest off." Ratchet helps the beat Autobot up.
"Thanks Ratchet. Sideswipe can get just as bad as his twin." Mirage groans, rubbing a servo on the back of his helm.
"I'd avoid saying anything against Sunstreaker at the moment. I haven't seen Sideswipe this sensitive about him since they first got separated." Ratchet warned.
The others nodded in agreement. I decided to follow Ratchet to the medbay. My curiosity is getting the better of me. Since working with the Autobots, I've never seen them get so worked up over another bot. They make Sunstreaker seem like he is as bad as a Decepticon. Maybe he used to be, but then that would make Sideswipe a con as well. I want to know more. I slip in behind Ratchet as he walks in, hiding behind some crates. Optimus is standing over Sideswipe, who is laying on a medical birth. It's hard to see but it looks like he is cuffed to the table.
"I'm going to attempt to do a slow wake up. But I have a feeling he's going to be violent. No matter what." Ratchet tells him. Optimus only nods.
It's quiet besides the whirring of machines. Neither Optimus nor Ratchet say anything. Only watching over the unconscious bot. After a few moments a roar echoes throughout the bay.
"Sunstreaker!" Sideswipe fights against his binds.
"Sideswipe! You're in the medical bay." Ratchet yells over him.
"I felt him. It was stronger than before. We need to find him." Sideswipe ignores him, still trying to yank away.
"You need to calm down." Ratchet orders.
"Are you able to talk to him?" Optimus asks over Sideswipes struggling.
"No!" Sideswipe growls, "This is the closest he's felt in eons."
"Jazz, attempt to increase our sensor range. Keep a look out for any Autobot Signature." Optimus says through his comm link.
"I need to go look for him." Sideswipe says as he continues to struggle.
"Are you sure he is on Earth?" Optimus asks, his voice calm and collected.
"I don't know. I can't find out if I'm cuffed to this berth." Sides strains.
"I can't have you racing through cities looking for him..." Optimus starts, before getting Interrupted.
"Optimus, there is an Autobot escape pod heading towards Earth." Jazz says over the intercom.
"Sunstreaker!" Sides cries out.
