Chapter 19

The hanger is in chaos when I walk in. Soldiers shouting, Autobots storming about. I stop just before I'm about to enter, debating if it's even smart to walk in. Not sure, I want to know what's going on. Unfortunately, I am spotted before I can turn around.

"Hart! Welcome to the party." Sideswipe calls out in a very sarcastic tone.

He skates over to me as I slowly walk out. A forced smile rest upon his face. I can see he is just as stressed out as Sunstreaker.

"Sunny with you?" he asks as he glides next to me, looking around for his brother.

"He's hiding." I reply, glancing up at him.

"I figured. He can only handle so much of humans and bots being around. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did." He admits.

"You should be proud of him." I stop walking and tilt my head up to look at him better. "He's trying."

He falls to one knee, face getting closer to mine. "Hey, I am extremely proud of my brother. He is doing way more than he used to. He's even being nicer, too. That I'm not sure I like, honestly." He says the last part with a smile.

There is a pause, but before I can answer he starts speaking again.

"You look cute trying to defend him though." He winks, then gets up and skates away.

"I am not cute." I grumble to no one.

I make my way through the chaos. I dodge around bots and push past soldiers. Trying hard to keep myself together. The closer I get to my desk, the more anxious I become. I've dealt with crowds from the soldiers before. When they are getting ready for missions. Everyone rushing about, barely looking where they were going. This type of chaos always wears me out. It's the closet to being tired I feel. After tonight, I will definitely have to go to the cliff. I'm not at my desk more than a minute and Major Lennox is standing over me.

"We found an article on an orb from 20 years ago, but nothing on it since. I had the file sent to you." He explains.

I'm a little confused about what he wants me to do. They could have easily gotten a location from it and gone to check it out. "Even through it was from 20 years ago, did you send someone out to the spot to see if it was still there? Sir." I ask carefully, not wanting to undermine him.

"Open the file." I do as he says and he continues, "We looked up the place. Anything we could and if you read this article, it says the home vanished. Gone without a trace."

I read over the words quickly. The people who had found it along with their home vanished within days of the original article. Along with the orb. There is nothing on them reappearing anywhere.

"Looks like we are back to square one. But I still suggest looking in the area. Maybe the orb turned them invisible or something." I suggest.

"For 20 years." Lennox looks skeptical.

"I don't know, but it's the best chance we got sir." I push.

"Optimus" He calls for the leader, then pats me on the back and walks away.

I internally groan. It wasn't a hard pat, but enough that I'm glad I held myself together.

"Find something?" I hear Prime say behind me.

"No, but when will Ratchet and Wheeljack have those devices ready?" Lennox asks.

"Next day or two. Why?" Prime asks.

"We may want to check out the location of where the orb was last seen. It's a long shot, but it's all we got so far." Lennox explains.

"I agree. I will tell Ratchet and Wheeljack to hurry." Optimus's footsteps make way. Slowly growing softer as he walks away.

"Soldiers, those assigned internet duty, keep searching. There must be something out there." Lennox's voice rings in my ears as he speaks loud and clear.

"Yes, Sir." I join the chorus of voices.

I read through both articles again. Hoping for some clues to help me. I write down the location, date, and names that could be useful. It's hard to believe that a couple and their house could just vanish. It must be something to do with the orb. I look for anything else that happened in that year and local to the home. There were a few searches done for the couple, but no details. Then the articles just stop after two weeks. It's as if people forgot the couple vanished. Maybe they never cared enough. There has got to be something. They had to have had a family or someone who missed them.

It's getting later in the night and I'm still digging. I've looked through so many pages. My eyes should be burning from staring at the screen. No one else has found anything either. Around midnight, I slide my chair back and stand up. I don't feel anything, but I need a second. I take a look around the mostly empty hanger. A glimmer of gold catches my eye. A silver sheen right next to it. Sideswipe notices me right away and stops his conversation with Sunstreaker to wave to me. Sunstreaker back was to me, but he is quick to turn around and look. I give a small wave back, then turn back to my work. A small smile lingers on my lips. My fingers gently caress over them. I realize I have been smiling a lot in the past few months. Especially after Sunstreaker arrived. I'm not sure how often I did before. Sideswipe always managed to make me smile, but I didn't talk to him nearly as much as I do now. It's nice.

As morning comes none of us have gotten anywhere. The orb is lost somewhere, and we have hit a dead end. Optimus showed up around 0600 and has been talking to Jazz, Ironhide and my supervisors. I'm not sure what they are talking about as I'm still focused on my work. The twins had left about 0100 and as it gets closer to 0800, I hear them strolling back into the hanger. Sideswipe is not quiet and doesn't seem to care who hears him. As I'm about to shut down my station, Ratchet and Wheeljack are coming around the corner from the med bay. Both walking fast to get somewhere. Ratchet is carrying something in his hand, so is Wheeljack. A lot of us soldiers and Autobots turn to watch and listen in.

"We did it. We were able to create two devices to locate the orb." Ratchet says, sounding excited.

"Well done, Ratchet and Wheeljack." Optimus praises.

I join the soldiers in congratulations and cheering. Sounds like we will be able to find the orb after all. Major Lennox has a smile on his face, making his eyes glow as he tries to calm us down. Ratchet, himself, looks uncomfortable, but Wheeljack is bowing and soaking it all in.

"Settle down!" Optimus calls out over everyone, causing the room to fall silent.

"Now that we have a way to find the orb. We will split into two teams and start at the location the second one was last seen." Optimus continues.

He names who will be with who and of course the twins are together. Lennox calls out which soldiers are going where after Optimus finishes. I stop paying attention at this point and finish shutting down my area. After I finish, I turn around and the lambo twins are standing not to far way from me. Both looking at me. Sideswipe has a cheesy grin on his face.

"What?" A hundred things run through my mind as I stare at their mischievous looks.

"You should come with us." Sideswipe blurts out.

My jaw drops, unsure of what to say. My eyes glancing between the two.

"You haven't been out in ages. Not since I've been here at least." Sideswipe continues.

He's right, only because I died the month after he arrived. There weren't too many missions going on and all of us were stuck at base. The cliff had become my hideaway from everyone.

"I'm needed here. I can't leave." I finally say something.

"Your off though." Sideswipe's smile faulters.

"Yeah, and I need to sleep. I've been up all night." I lie and I see a flicker of knowingness in Sunstreaker's optics.

"You can sleep on the way. Our seats can get pretty comfy." Sideswipe tries to persuade me.

"Thank you, but I really can't. You guys go have fun. Bring the orb back." I call out as I start walking away.

"Go convince her." I hear Sideswipe push his brother. The sound of wheels rolling across the floor following me.

I continue to walk, quickening my pace. He catches me with ease, not wasting time. It isn't until we are around corner, and he says something.

"Want to explain to me why you can't go?" He asks in a low tone.

"I will not talk about this here. Let's go to my room." I growl out. I wish they would just accept my answer.

Sunstreaker doesn't say anything and follows me. I know he doesn't have that much time, but I can't have him or his brother bugging me about this. We get to my room and Sunstreaker transforms. His holoform steps out of his vehicle mode and follows me into my room. The door shuts behind him and echoes around us. I take a moment gather my thoughts.

"I can't leave." I blurt out.

"I've figured that out, but why?" His holoform crosses his arms, raising an eyebrow at me.

"Because I can't. Like Literally. About a month after I died, I tried to go on a mission, and I vanished from the osprey while midair and came too on the beach above my body." I try to give the quick version, hoping he accepts it.

"How did you just vanish? Did no one see you?" He asks glaring at me.

I sigh before answering, "We weren't even that far out yet. I'm still surprised no one noticed. But I got a huge reprimanding when they got back. They didn't seem to notice me missing until they were about to land. After that I didn't want to try it again. So, I changed jobs. Which was surprisingly easy. I just assumed I'm not allowed to leave since my real body is stuck on the island." I attempt to explain better.

"I thought ghost could go anywhere?" He puts a hand under his chin and starts to pace. Thinking hard while his eyes are on the floor. "Or at least go places they have seen before. But if you go there with someone you should be fine."

"You researched ghost too, didn't you?" I ask in bewilderment.

"Yes, but after I found out you are one." He waves me off, acting like its common knowledge.

"If you haven't noticed, I'm not your normal ghost." I can't help but sass.

"No scrap." He stops pacing and gives me a nasty look.

"Either way, you need to tell Sideswipe I won't be going." I stand my ground.

"Why not try again?" He suggests.

"Hell no. Then have people and Sideswipe actually notice me." I snap.

"I'm sure I can come up with some kind of excuse. I've been doing it since I found out." He walks closer to me, waving his hands as he talks. I can hear a bit of anger in his tone.

"That's because you put me in situations where you had too." My voice raises.

"Oh, now it's my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been able to save Prime." He growled inching closer to me, his form now towering over me.

"And I risked what little bit of my life I have left. I probably didn't have to do it. Ratchet would have figured it out eventually." I poke my finger into his chest.

"What if he couldn't? We need Prime." He says through clenched teeth.

"I almost vanished for good to save him. Next time I might not be so lucky to come back." I hold back from screaming at him.

"There is a reason you're still here. Maybe it's to save us." His voice lowers a bit.

"I can't keep putting myself on the line like that. I need to be careful." I try to speak calmly.

"What's the point when your already dead?" He roars. His fists clenching at his side.

"What do you mean she's already dead?"
