Chapter 16

The sun is high in the sky now. We have been out on the cliff most of the morning. Sunstreaker still seems to be having trouble accepting my fate. Every now and then, he throws a question at me. Some are harder to answer than others. Especially when he asked about my family. I only told him they would find out I died falling off a cliff. Just like everyone else. He doesn't need to know all the details. I'm sure my family has forgotten about me now, anyway. It's been so long since I've last seen or heard from them. That's another story I plan to take to the grave, or in this case, when I disappear.

"Sideswipe is wondering if we could go visit him. Ratchet left to go back to Prime. Now he's bored and whiny." Sunstreaker says.

"You go. I'll catch up." I look up at him.

"No, Sideswipe wants the both of us. And I don't know what to say if he asks questions." He admits, kneeling down, looking me in the eye.

A small smile spreads upon my lips. The first one to appear since the conversation started. "Okay, I'll come with."

I look down at the ledge. Small waves splash upon the shore. The mist rains over the small rock formation, making the stones shimmer. Sunstreaker skates slowly to the edge, a few loose patches of dirt give way and roll down the cliff. His wheeled feet stop next to me. I know he's looking at the same spot. Probably hoping there is a way for me to rise from within the sand. Willing my hand to reach though and dig myself free. If only dreams could come true.

"Let's go." I rip my gaze away and look up at Sunstreaker.

He nods to me and skates away from the ledge before transforming. The passenger side door opens and that's my cue. I wonder if he's going to make this a thing. He doesn't exactly like humans inside his vehicle mode. Though, I am only a ghost. No problem with bodily fluids here. But I have also grown to like jumping to and from this location. I feel free when I do it. I climb in and his seatbelt is quick to wrap around me.

"You do realize I don't need a seatbelt." I sass, letting the belt slide though me.

"Yes, you do. Put it on." He growls, sounding annoyed.

"Fine." I groan and undo the belt and slide it back over me, holding my shape.

"You are not going to start doing that all the time, are you? he asks quietly.

"I can't. If we are around others, I have to hold my form together." I remind him.

"I mean when it's just you and me." He clarifies.

"It does take a lot of energy to hold myself together and I try not to when I'm out here, but if you don't want me too. I won't." I let him know.

"All I ask is that for situations like this or if I need to grab you for safety, you stay solid." He requests.

"I will." Though I can't help but think about when he would have to grab me. I don't point it out, knowing he has already been given a lot of information and it was probably a momentary lapse in judgment.

"Thank you." He whispers.

I don't get a chance to say anything as he speeds off away from the cliff. The base comes into view rather quickly. He isn't speeding as fast as earlier. Which is nice, but I don't think he needs to race. It's not like we are on a time limit. He drifts to a stop in front of the hanger and his door whips open. I swiftly get out and he transforms behind me. I start walking, knowing he will catch up quickly. We walk/skate past soldiers and bots. A weird feeling of nervousness hits me, making me look up at Sunstreaker. His optics are forward and cold. It's a look I only see when he's around everyone else. I prefer the softer optics he has when he's with Sideswipe and me.

"Thank Primus. What took you guys so long?" Sideswipe cheers as we walk into the medbay.

"My apologies, Sideswipe. We didn't mean to make you wait." I answer, trying not to laugh.

Then I get grabbed and set down on the medical table Sideswipe is lying on. Good thing I was ready for anything.

"Could have said something." I glare up and Sunstreaker.

"Where's the fun in that?" He smirks, knowing I knew exactly why he did it.

"It wasn't to boring without us, was it?" I ask, looking back at Sideswipe.

"Ratchet ran a bunch of tests. Found nothing out of the ordinary but is still making me stay for observation for the next day or two. He is so confused on how I just woke up. I think it's going to bug him for a while." Sideswipe explains.

"I'm sure he will figure it out. Ratchet can figure anything out." Sunstreaker says. I can feel his optics on me as he says it. Almost like it's meant for me.

"Well, when I'm not on shift, I'll come hang out. Keep ya company." I change the subject.

"I told Ratchet I have to be out of here before our day off. He said I should be good by then." Sideswipe says excitedly.

"Heard anything on Optimus?" Sunstreaker asks.

Sideswipe stays silent for a moment, looking way slightly, "Ratchet is still working on him. He's stable but not waking up. He was hoping to figure out how I woke up to help Prime."

"I need to talk to Hart quick." Sunstreaker says suddenly doesn't give either of us a chance to retaliate. He grabs me and takes me out of the medbay.

"I really don't like being grabbed. And you said only in emergencies" I curse through clenched teeth.

"Then don't let me." He sneers. "And this is an emergency."

"You know I can't." I growl back. "And this is not an emergency."

"Exactly." He smirks. "And yes it is."

"Why did you take me out of there?" I ask, crossing my arms. His digits still gripped around me. I chose to not bother arguing about whether this is an emergency or not. It won't end well.

"You can bring Prime back." He spits out.

"No, I can't." I retort.

"Just do what you did to Sides." I look at him like he's crazy.

"I don't even know what I did to Sideswipe." I throw my hands up in the air.

"You can try." He raises a browridge at me.

"No, I could be exposed. I wouldn't even be able to get close enough without Ratchet yelling at me." I argue.

"I can distract him. Hart, we need Optimus. If he doesn't wake up, we will never defeat Megatron." He pleads.

"Ratchet will figure it out. You keep saying he is the best medic." His optics change from soft and begging to daggers in an instant.

"But that could take days or months." He says after we glare at each other for a moment.

I sigh in defeat, "I just don't know if it will happen again."

"If it doesn't work, you can at least say you tried." He says in a positive tone. Sounding more like Sideswipe than himself.

"How are you going to distract Ratchet?" I ask.

"I got it. Don't worry. Just be ready to run to Prime." He says with a devilish grin.

He takes me back inside the medbay. Sideswipe glances over at us with confusion written on his face. I shrug at him, hoping he doesn't ask questions. I'm already regretting spilling my secret. Sunstreaker sets me on the ground, none to gently and I sway trying to get my bearings.

"Why did you put her down there?" Sideswipe asks, trying to look down at me.

"Bro, I'm sorry that I have to do this, but it's for Prime." Sunstreaker says setting a servo on his brother's shoulder.

Then the next thing I know Sunstreaker falls to the floor and Sideswipe passes out. Sideswipes monitor starts going off. A part of me freaks out, but then Ratchet and Jolt come running out. The shock quickly wears off and I make a break for the room holding Optimus. I squeeze past the door just as it's about to close. Inside, Optimus is laying on a metal table, similar to Sideswipes. His chest is open, bearing his spark. I think fast and jump to him, landing just below the opening. His spark is dim, but still glowing. It pulses like a heartbeat. I feel awkward looking at it. It is a private core piece to a cybertronian.

I can hear ruckus outside the doors. Ratchet is yelling, at who, I'm not sure. All I know is I need to work quickly. Not sure how I am going to do that though. Since I only had to touch Sideswipe to get him to wake. Maybe touching close to primes spark will work. I rest my hands just below the opening. My eyes close and I focus all my energy on Optimus. Everything around me goes silent as I block the noise.

At first nothing happens. I grit my teeth and keep trying. I'm not sure how this is supposed to work. With Sideswipe it just happened. I didn't have to try. Now I just pray it happens again. My concentration breaks for a moment as voices on the other side get louder. If I had a heart, it would be racing. I bring my hands up and rub them together. Then I plant them back down.

"Please work." I mumble under my breath.

Then I feel it. The warm sensation is building up inside me. It runs through my body then down my arms and to my hands. Optimus's spark beams. Glowing brighter and pulsing quicker. This is the same, yet different from my experience with Sideswipe. I didn't get to watch the magic happen before. My energy slowly starts to fade as the warmth leaves my hands. A woozy feeling comes over me. The voices grow louder and as the doors open a bright light washes over Optimus and me. Then everything goes black. When I open my eyes again, I'm laying on the beach.
