Chapter 13
An electric-magnetic field took out all electronics and electricity in the area. All humans are fine, but the Autobots are not doing so well. After figuring out the problem and finally getting word from Lennox. After hours of investigating, we were able to send jets and helos out to the area. The field wiped everything out but did not keep a field up. So, we were able to go in and pick up the Autobots. Lucky for us, Jolt had stayed back along with the twins, Skids and Mudflap. Not that they are much help.
As the helos started coming back with the Autobots, I couldn't sit at my station anymore. There isn't much I can do anyway. I go outside with the rest of the soldiers. We all watch as the helos, not so carefully, drop the bodies on the hard concrete. I resist the urge to run to Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. Sunstreaker is going to have a hay day about his paint being scratched. They lay there, seeming lifeless. Jolt goes straight to Ratchet. Getting another medical officer awake is the better option.
"Skids, Mudflap bring Sideswipe into the medical bay. Stat!" Jolt orders as he works on Ratchet.
I don't want to bother him, but my internal need to know if they will be alright is killing me. I run over to Jolt and stop a few feet away. Afraid to get too close.
"Jolt? Are they going to be alright?" After a minute, I finally get up the courage to ask.
"I've never dealt with such a wave like this. As long as I can get Ratchet awake, both of us together should be able to get hopefully everybody back online." He pauses and looks down at me. "Sideswipe and Prime will be another story. They were the closest to the blast."
That is all he says, and he goes back to work. I stare for a moment, praying Ratchet wakes soon. Skids and Mudflap are carefully carrying Sideswipe to the medical bay. His wheels unfortunately are dragging on the ground. I wish there was something I could do. I don't know enough about Cybertronians to repair them. My eyes glance around, landing on the bot who crashed into my life. Sunstreaker lays still. His body scratched and scuffed. I couldn't be surprised if they woke him last. My boots drag against the ground as I make my way over to him.
"Please wake up, Sunstreaker. Your brother needs you." I whisper to him.
I lay a hand on his cheek. I'm sure if I could cry, a tear would be rolling down my cheek. This is not how the Autobots should end. They will not end. Jolt will get Ratchet back and Ratchet will get everyone else awake. He has too. The soldiers get lights set up outside, surrounding the bots. It glows against their armor. Sunstreaker's metallic paint shines brightly. Like I'm looking at the sun. I hear commotion behind me. Jolt is giving orders to the twins to get Ratchet inside. He was able to get a life sign out of Ratchet, but he is still in stasis.
"I'm going to go check on your brother. I know Jolt hasn't started on him, but I'm going to see the damage. Try and wake up while I'm gone." I say to an unresponsive Sunstreaker.
I move past soldiers that are standing there. Waiting for something to happen. Some are trying to help, but there is not much they can do. Jolt is warning everyone about getting shocked if humans were to try and help get them back online. I keep pushing past people, trying to get to the medbay. Everyone is now up and out. All the soldiers that went on the mission are back, getting checked out by medical themselves. The fast pace I'm taking doesn't seem fast enough. It feels like there are more and more soldiers coming. I can't get past them. It's the sea and land is so far away.
When I finally get too medical, Jolt and the twins have Ratchet on a medical table. Ratchet has life signs, but Jolt is having trouble getting him awake. I continue on my way to Sideswipe. He's laying down on a metal slab, the same one as Ratchet. He looks just as dead as Sunstreaker. There is no glow in his eyes. I can't see much from where I stand, but I can see a part of an indent starting just above his eye. Like the forming of a scar. I wish I could see more. A part of me wants to climb up, but I also don't want to disturb anything. I know I could teleport up there, but I can't risk anyone seeing me. They may be busy, but if one happens to look, I'd be toast.
Sideswipe looks peaceful as he lays there. He's not talking or moving about. He's calm. It's so unlike him. I miss him skating around, being loud. Ratchet better be able to bring him back. You can't have Sunstreaker without Sideswipe. Maybe if one of them wakes up, the other will too. I have a feeling Sideswipe will be a lot harder to wake than his brother. He was closer to the blast range than the others. Why would he go near that thing, if he knew he could end up like this? He was trying to be a hero. Look where it got him.
"There has got to be something I can do." I say out loud to myself.
An idea comes to mind. Only I'm not sure if it will work. They do it to humans if our heart stops beating. I'm sure Jolt and Ratchet also have one similar for the Autobots. I quickly get over to jolt. He is engrossed in his work on Ratchet, he doesn't even see me come over. Probably has no idea I'm here.
"Jolt!" I shout up to him, my hands cupped around my mouth.
"Can't you see I'm busy!" He yells back, not even looking down.
"Do you have a defibrillator?" I ignore and press on.
"A what?" He looks at me this time. Only I can see he is trying to figure out what a defibrillator is.
"I don't know what you would call it, but on humans we use it to try and restart hearts if they stop. It basically sends an electric shock to the heart to get it pumping again." I try to explain.
"Yes!" He exclaims. "I wasn't even thinking about that."
He turns back to Ratchet, rubs his hands together and I can see static electricity warming up. Random shocks hit the air looking like little volts of lightning. Once he is charged up, he leans over Ratchet. With one zap, Ratchet gasps for air. Even though I don't think they actually breathe. He starts coughing before slowly sitting up. He starts speaking, but I can't understand him. Jolt is speaking back, trying to calm him down.
"Where is Prime and Sideswipe?" He asks in English.
"Sideswipe is here. I haven't been able to get Prime in here yet. I wanted to wake you first." Jolt explains.
Ratchet moves quickly, almost stepping on me, to get to Sideswipe. He orders Jolt to get the twins and move Prime into the medical bay. Ratchet then does the same as Jolt did to him. Only this time nothing happens. He waits a few seconds and tries again. When it doesn't work, he growls in frustration. Telling Sideswipe to wake up.
"What if you wake Sunstreaker first?" I suggest making myself known.
"Hart? What are you doing in here?" he asks, surprise written all over his face.
"I came to see Sideswipe. Then I gave the idea about the defibrillator." I tell him, taking a step closer.
"You shouldn't be in here. The electromagnetics that hit our bodies could harm you if you touch us. I just told Jolt to make sure all humans stay away." He then tries to shoo me out.
"But when the wave hit everyone, how were the humans not hurt?" I ask as I'm about to be stepped on if I didn't move.
"It was meant for only Cybertronian. But it leaves an aftershock until we are grounded again. You need to leave." He pushes harder.
"Okay, I'll leave. But I still think waking Sunstreaker can help with Sideswipe." I urge before walking out the door.
If he says anything, I don't hear it. The door promptly shut behind me. I stand there for a moment before leaving the area. I go back into the hanger. Unsure of what to do now. Lots of Soldiers have left the open bay. Only a few remain. I spot Lennox and Epps arguing with someone. I recognize him, but I can't remember his name. The man never looks happy when he is here. I don't think he likes the Autobots very much. I decided to leave it be. It's not my concern, yet. I'm sure we will hear about it later.
As I go to be with Sunstreaker, I pass Jolt, Skids and Mudflap struggling to bring Primes body into medical. The Autobots still lay scattered throughout the open pad. Soldiers are still being warned to stay away. I'm waiting for someone to stop me. They have no idea that nothing can harm me. I need to keep my secret, but I also want to stay with Sunstreaker. My feet keep moving, so far so good. Just as I'm about to reach the golden twin, I hear my name being called out. I internally groan, but I slowly turn around. Lennox is standing at the edge of the hanger, looking at me.
"Hart, you can't be over there." He shouts.
I want to say it's okay for me, but he would ask questions. I can't defy and order. Been there done that. I'm so close to Sunstreaker.
"I can't risk anything. I'm sorry Sunstreaker. Please wake up soon." I whisper to him. Then I turn around and head back inside.
Lennox stops me before I can walk past him. "What were you thinking, Corporal?" He asks, hand on my shoulder.
"I was trying to check on Sunstreaker." I say the truth.
"Everyone has been told to stay away. For our own safety. I know that you two have become buddies, but it would be best to leave for now. We don't need anyone getting hurt or worse. You will get word when they are good to be around again." He explains, then gives me a small shove in the other direction.
"Yes, sir." Is all I say and start walking to my room.
I grumble a bit to myself as I head down the almost empty hallway. If only they knew what I could do. There is so much they don't know. But then again, I'm glad they are treating me like this. That means they still have no idea the secret I keep. I get to my room, unlock the door and go inside. All I can do now is wait. I could go out to the cliff, but the sun hasn't started to rise yet. There would be no point. So, I go to my desk and write in my journal. The only thing that can keep me sane at this point.
