THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, By A. J. Finn
If you have been following these posts, (just me chatting to myself via words on a screen as truth is no one is following much, if anything, of my what I write), the will understand why prior to reading this book that I had thought of it much like The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. I thought of The Woman in the Window as being something not for me.
I am not within the target audience this book would have and I hate the idea of that, in any form of storytelling. I hate the thought of something being written for a targeted group of people. A story, any story, should be allowed to flow, to become whatever it may become and not be cornered or have a pre-destined outline or outcome due to who may read it. Anyhow, I would have thought this to be one of those tales not for me.
What changed that for me? Well, certainly not the fact that this story has been told many times and, in many ways, not only on the level of someone seeing something occur in another home from the comfort of their own and certainly not the fact that this is one of those stories where the MC is not believed for reasons related to drink abuse, drug abuse, medication abuse or anything else along that line.
The Woman in the Window is not a new story. Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock for instance, or something like the movie Suburbia ...
So why read this if it has been done before and if it is not for me?
It was one of those books that seemed to be everywhere, prominently stacked in bookstores and store which have book displays. Over two million books sold ... it would tell you. Some time in 2020 or possibly even earlier, I had a morning breakfast show on the television. I wasn't particularly watching until I heard that their next guest was A.J. Finn. I watched the interview, and he seems like a nice guy, so eventually I thought, what the Hell? I got the book.
For the most part I did enjoy it. It is a read perhaps best enjoyed while taking your time to read it, no need to rush through it. It is also something that was not going to blow me away, I wouldn't particularly recommend it to anyone even though I did enjoy it to a certain degree.
As I write this, it is Friday the fourteenth of May 2021, the day the Netflix adaptation of the book is released. Again, I have to wonder, why it has become a movie? The success of the book obviously but it is nothing new as I have mentioned before. There are countless movies that cover some aspect of the story.
The movie is a decent watch though be it disappointing, forget movies like Rear Window, I thought there would be enough in the story for it to stand on its own. Unfortunately, for me the movie is rushed and leaves out a lot of what the book has in which keeps it standing on its own feet. I would normally be a fan of actress Amy Adams but not in this case.
Anyhow, book was better than I hoped it would be and the movie was disappointing. This is just me, I'm sure there are many out there who would and will love both.
