My Snowdrop
Dear Mr. J,
It's been years since I last saw you in person. It feels still quite unusual and weird whenever I step out in my new school now, somewhere in my heart, I am still expecting for you to appear beside me miraculously like you always did. I know it is a youthful desire born out of my newly discovered interest in romance novels and dramas, but interestingly, I am not regretful to be a bit immature for once.
I don't know if you remember me or any of those short and brisk moments, for me, they are the only memoirs left by you. Actually, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to you for bringing the joy and warmth in my rugged and raging life. You were like a radiance of sunshine that appeared out of the blue and brightened up my dark and gloomy valley of life. You might never realize your own significance, but for me, you turned out to be an indispensable being. I can't help, but feel amazed at the influence you held.
Probably, I fell for you the moment I saw you eleven years ago, just that I was too naïve to untangle my own feelings. For next nine years, I denied my own self and growing feelings, stubbornly holding onto the assumptions and views of people around me. Eventually, when I unveiled them, I tried to flee from you, afraid of ruining your simple life, afraid of losing that sought after friend I used to see in you. Finally, I gave up on my idle fears and attempts to move on, and decided to confess. But my own fortune had turned up against me, my every attempt was in vain, I had lost the hope of ever being completely truthful to you, when I had the chance once again. I grabbed it.
Do you remember that day? You were walking right behind me, accompanied by your ever increasing group of friends. I was just too nervous to ask you out, I knew it was my last chance I was seeing you, my family were shifting to new city the same day, and I won't be returning back. I waited for you, my wait came at an end and I confessed. I knew a relationship would never be possible, we were standing at the most crucial end of our lives. I forbade you from giving the answer. You never gave the answer, nor did I ask for it....
I could probably never know that answer, but some stories are better left unsaid and untold. I don't know if life will give me another chance to rewrite the same tale, with same person, but a new ending; I don't know if I will ever see you choosing books for me or encouraging my every achievement and interest fervently; I don't know if I'll ever hear that voice caring for me or the same voice laughing around cheerily, making me smile at every childish jab. All I know; is that, that the way my heart fluttered back then, it will still be the same for the years to come. My affection won't be altered, no matter the distances and spaces. You are the streak of light, waiting for me at end of every dark tunnel; you are the pole star, illuminating and leading my way in inky moonless light.
The brightest star in my gloomy lifeless night sky, I cannot reach you, all I can do is to smile at the star with tears streaking down, recalling all the memories of time gone by. You are my beginning and end, you are my Snowdrop...
Aarushi
She folded the piece of writing and sealed it in an envelope. She placed the envelope in her diary and placed it on her bedside table, her eyes moist from the recent trip to past memories. Aarushi was a medical student in her second year. She had been a brilliant kid since childhood. Bubbly and intelligent, she was an apple of eye for her parents and teachers. Not long ago had she cracked the national eligibility entrance test for medical schools and entered one of the most prestigious medical universities of country, making her parents cry tears of joy and proud.
Her way through the life had nowhere been near to normal and facile, after losing her beloved grandmother, she had barely seen the world when tragedy struck upon her family. Her father's business began to fall apart, their family savings were all utilized in vain attempts to save the crisis. Their house and properties were all lost to creditors. Her parents had decided to move to a new city. Witnessing the situation, she had grown to be more mature and conscientious than any other person of her age. But there was a side of that resilient and unyielding personality which searched for care and love of joy frivolously.
Aarushi rested her head on the pillow. Tears were trickling down her cheeks; she turned over, attempting to stifle a pitiful sob. Memories played like a video film inside her head, a single word came into her mind amongst the ongoing turmoil.
'Ajay...'

Aarushi walked down the school corridor holding onto her father's hand. It was first of April, beginning of a new school year; children along with their parents were streaming along the corridors of primary school, searching for their classes. Little Aarushi was excited to begin her new year, a day before, as the tradition goes, her mother had prepared her new school supplies along with a tidy new uniform, Aarushi had risen up particularly early today, twitching with excitement to begin her year. Her mother had made her hair into two cute pigtails today, which complimented her fair skin, round face and beautiful eyes.
They reached in front of the classroom and checked the list of names; Aarushi's name was nowhere to be found. The classes had gone through a shuffling process. Being an introverted and timid girl, Aarushi was scared; her old friends would all be lost now. They started checking all the other lists, at last they found it. Aarushi had been allotted a new section. They arrived at the end of the corridor.
Aarushi looked up and saw her new class engraved on a wooden board in roman numerals, it read, 'II-D'.
She took a long breath and stepped inside the class. That was the first moment she saw him, jet black hair, meticulously styled, and perfectly chiseled face with lovely dimples, laughing endearingly with his friends.
'It's him'
A voice spoke up in her head. Aarushi could not take her eyes off the strangely familiar boy sitting on the other corner of class. She stopped in her tracks staring in his direction. Suddenly, her friend called out to her, bringing her back to the real world. She took her seat, but could not help sneaking glances at the boy. Aarushi could not remember if she had seen the boy.
The teacher started calling out the roll call. She called Aarushi's name, waking her from her musing. After answering, Aarushi keenly looked towards boy's direction, waiting for him to respond to any of the names.
She need not wait for long though.
'Ajay'
'Present'
His voice was slightly high pitched, soon after answering the call he went back to his ongoing conversation with his friend. Aarushi looked at him, strangely intrigued by his charming and simple personality.
'Ajay...' was all she could think.

Aarushi looked at herself in her bathroom mirror. Her eyes were swollen, an aftermath of her crying last night. She looked at herself and sighed miserably. She got washed up and dressed for her day ahead. She was wearing a white half sleeves long kurta with printed lilies and ankle length white pants; she acclaimed her attire with a pair of silver earrings. She looked purely angelic with her sleek black hair tied loosely behind her head. Collecting her books and white coat from her desk, she rushed to her lecture. They were having Biochemistry followed by Anatomy this morning.
She reached her class and got seated in the fourth row from front. A message popped up on her cell phone. It was her best friend, Juhi, she opened the message; it was an image.
She downloaded the file, the image cleared out and Aarushi nearly knocked her thick books off the table in triumph. It was an image of Ajay, standing in front of National Technology Institute, Delhi.
'So he did make it', Aarushi smiled, gazing lovingly at the picture. She glanced at her identity card lying on the humongous pile of books in front of her and her smile broadened.
Her fortune had finally turned around a bit; she now has a slight chance to see the person she had longed to meet all these years.
Maybe this was the new story she wished for, maybe this was the chance to change the ending, maybe this was her chance to reach for her snowdrop once again... She stared out of the window on her side, smiling jubilantly at the new story eagerly waiting for her...
