We Can Try
Caroline leaned against the counter awkwardly and she didn't exactly know what to do. She held her head low so she wasn't looking at Haley. Even though she just wanted to stare into her brown eyes for hours. Lily shifted next to her and looked up at the offers.
„Hey uhm I'd like to have a mango passion fruit please and a piece of cheesecake" Lily said and smiled widely. Caroline looked up meeting Haley's eyes immediately.
„And what can I get you, Caroline?" she asked already knowing what Caroline wanted to have.
Lily turned to look at Caroline and then back at Haley like she was missing out on something. She kept her eyes on her friend for a while, watching Caroline intriguingly. Caroline cleared her throat.
„I'll get a strawberry frappuchino and a chocolate cupcake please" she said with a weak voice.
Haley smiled and turned to get their drinks, giving Caroline some time to take in a deep breath. She glanced at Lily from the corner of her eye, seeing her eyes fixated on her face.
„What?" she whispered.
„Is there anything going on that I didn't get or?" Lily whispered back and then smiled sheepishly.
Caroline shoved her a little and walked towards Layla, who got their food. She was just watching this whole scenario with a huge smirk on her face, because she knew exactly what was happening. And apparently, well for Caroline it seemed like she could read her every thought and it scared Caroline a little, because she wasn't sure what that meant. She was hoping she wasn't being too obvious or too desperate.
„That makes $13,40 please" Haley said and placed the two drinks on the counter.
„It's my turn Carr" Lily pushed Caroline away and handed Haley the money. Caroline nodded a thanks and they walked to a table near the window to sit down.
„Well this was awkward" Lily said after she took a sip. Caroline blushed and glanced at Haley, who was not so subtly watching her as well. She blushed even more and turned to Lily.
„Yeah, I guess..." Caroline half questioned.
„Was that a question or what is happening, you know her?"
„It's long story Lily, I can't tell you now, I'm sorry." She started to fiddle with her straw, because she felt Haley still watching her.
„Okay, I understand, but there really was some well what do I call it? Tension? Yes, tension" Lily said and raised one eyebrow teasingly.
„Shut up, Lil" Caroline giggled.
She noticed that her coffee cup had her name written on it. She assumed it was Haley who wrote it and it looked just wonderful, she had never seen a handwriting this beautiful, she had never seen her own name look this good. The dot on the ‚i' almost looked like a heart to her, it looked like someone wanted to draw a heart, but then decided against it. Caroline couldn't help but giggle at Haley's cuteness.
„Okay enough!" Haley said to Layla.
She was watching Caroline the whole time, amazed at how she always managed to look so beautiful, even when wearing just jeans and a hoodie. It's just in her nature I guess she thought, absently smiling at Caroline.
„Enough of what Haley?" Layla asked puzzled.
„She just noticed that I almost drew a heart on her cup."
„You drew a heart on her cup?" Layla asked.
„Almost, I wanted to, but then I decided not to" she sighed.
„You two clearly have something going on and you need to figure it out as soon as possible, because Hal, can't you see how nervous you make her?" Layla stepped next to Haley and smiled at her.
„You think? Well we still need to talk somehow, you know..." she trailed off not taking her eyes off of Caroline, who was talking and laughing with Lily.
„I know, I know, you got it." She patted her back lightly and just remained next to Haley.
„Here, hold that" Haley said after a while and handed Layla the towel she was holding. Layla took it, just watching Haley. She stepped back and walked towards Caroline and Lily. They just finished eating and they had some magazines spread out in front of them. When Haley approached them, they looked up and Caroline's face lit up immediately. Her cheeks turned redder with every second passing by. Haley loved that.
„Hey, Caroline, do you maybe have a second?" she said shoving her hands into her apron.
Caroline looked at Lily and then back up at Haley.
„Yeah sure" she said nervously and looked back at Lily, who nodded.
„I'll be right here" Lily smiled and grabbed one of the magazines.
Caroline got up and smiled weakly at Haley, following her to a corner of the café. Haley wasn't even sure what she wanted to say to Caroline, she wanted to kiss her to be honest. She knew that they had this weird tension and she could see that Caroline was blushing every time Haley looked at her, it was the cutest thing and it made her heart race in her chest.
She turned around and faced Caroline, who was standing right behind Haley. Her cheeks were flushed and she looked nervous and scared almost. She was indeed, because Caroline haven't thought about what she could tell Haley, she knew that Haley wanted to know about the kiss and why she did that, but she never actually thought about a real reason. Does anything have to have a reason? She just wanted to kiss Haley, it was more of an instinct and she really wanted to kiss her at this exact moment, but that was not gonna happen.
„So, I wanted to talk to you about the.."
„kiss" they said at the same time and Haley smiled at Caroline.
„I know, Haley, it was just you know, I didn't think, I just acted on impulse and
I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to invade your personal space or overwhelm you." Caroline looked to her feet.
„No, it was.."
„I'm sorry, Haley, really, I just, it won't happen again." Caroline interrupted and smiled then quickly stepped back and headed back to Lily.
Haley stood there, her mouth was hanging open a little, she didn't expect that. She shook her head and blinked a few times, Caroline didn't even let her say a word. Taking a few steps forward Haley could see Caroline sitting in her chair with Lily again, they were talking intensely, it looked like they were arguing even.
Taking in a deep breath, she walked up to them again and grabbed Caroline's arm to pull her up. Caroline gave her a puzzled look and blinked a few times to comprehend that this was really happening.
They stood a few inches apart, just looking at each other. Haley's hand was still resting on Caroline's arm and her heart was racing like crazy. She felt her confidence leave her body with every breath she took in, because somehow Caroline made her feel weak and nervous, like a little foal that cannot walk just yet.
Neither of them knew what to do next, they didn't wanna ruin this moment. They just stood there facing each other, it was intimate and cute. Their looks were saying more than words could at that very moment, but every moment is fluid.
„Uhm, Caroline, you know this wasn't what I wanted..." Haley started.
Caroline looked at her, not knowing what she meant.
„You said it's not going to happen again and this is not what I want" she smiled shyly.
Caroline's face lit up and she smiled widely at Haley.
„You know, as long as you want it, too?" she asked and tiled her head a little.
Caroline felt fireworks in her stomach, she felt like she was in heaven. Haley looked so cute and she just wanted to kiss her lips, but she knew she couldn't, because they had to get to know each other first. Well this was going to be fun, Caroline didn't have much of a private life due to her work and she also had some things she wasn't ready sharing, but this wasn't anything she was thinking about.
She just nodded and stepped a little closer to Haley, if she couldn't kiss her she had to at least hug her. Haley was standing there right in front of her and she looked so beautiful and also nervous, Caroline knew she was waiting for her to do something, since she hadn't said anything. So she stepped forward and gently placed her arms around Haley's neck to embrace her.
„I would love to, Haley" she whispered with a smile playing on her lips.
Caroline felt Haley release a sigh, a content one and then she felt her arms around her and they just stood there in each others arms like this was something they have done numerous times.
Eventually, they let go and just smiled at each other. Haley was playing with her apron nervously, she looked up to meet Caroline's eyes.
„Okay..." she said and walked back to the counter, where Layla was leaning casually, waiting for her.
Caroline sank back into her chair, her heart still beating out of control. She blinked a few times and turned to Lily, who looked very entertained.
„Wow, this was" she smirked „cute."
„I don't know what just happened, Lily" Caroline was still dazzled and amazed.
„So, are you gonna ask her out or what?" Lily winked.
„I ehm well should I?" she scratched the back of her neck.
„I don't know what you two have, you need to tell me though, but from what I just witnessed, yes. Yes, you should ask her out." Lily smiled warmly.
Caroline was feeling all tingly, she still felt Haley's hands on her back, she still smelled her perfume, it smelled good, fruity and fresh. Her mind was screaming, she was arguing internally, even though the only real answer for her was ‚yes', yes to everything that had to do with Haley. She had to try.
„Okay" she breathed more to herself and glanced up to search for Haley. She wasn't there.
Haley was in the staff room, because Layla dragged her there as soon as she approached her.
„Tell me what that just was" she almost demanded.
„Damn Layla, I just had to talk to her."
„Not that, I knew you had to, I meant this little moment you two just shared, you looked like a married couple" Layla giggled, then winked.
Haley blushed and took in a deep breath.
„She is amazing and I really want to see if it works out, you know, this all wasn't coincidence" Haley said.
Layla just nodded, her smirk back in place, she gently bumped Haley's shoulder and walked back to serve costumers. They were still at work after all.
Haley followed and she saw Caroline and Lily packing their things. They got up and walked to the door, but Caroline stopped for a second. Haley noticed her cheeks were rosy red and her hair was falling wonderfully down her shoulders. She was beautiful as always and her eyes were glued to her own. Haley smiled as brightly as she could. Caroline lifted her hand to wave at her.
„Bye" she said quietly, Haley just watched her lips.
„Bye Caroline" she said and when Caroline walked through the door she released a breath she was holding and sank back against the counter.
This was definitely not the last time she saw her, she was almost sure that Caroline would come to grab a coffee every lunch break. Strawberry Frappuchino, tall without cream. Haley knew that. She loved strawberries and she loved Caroline's arms around her. Haley smiled. Caroline wasn't like anyone she had ever known, she was special and Haley wanted to get to know everything. She couldn't wait for tomorrow's lunch break and Caroline.
