I Would Be Honored
This first chapter picks up right after Obi-Wan makes his decision to become Aruna's interim master--don't worry, you'll get to see the thought process of that eventually (but you'll have to stick around for a while)! It's shorter than most of the chapters will be, but I wanted to make sure I got something up for those of you who have been waiting patiently. (And thank you for that.) I hope you all like it. :)
"I feel... numb," she replied steadily. Obi-Wan took in Aruna's withdrawn features. He remembered how brightly those hazel eyes had shone, how lively the freckles dotting her nose were the last time they'd spoken. But the hazel had mellowed, the freckles dulled. Even her raven curls even seemed to have lost their vivaciousness. Already-pale skin had taken on a ghastly hue, and her naturally petite frame had somehow shrunken.
"Taken place, many changes have," Master Yoda noted sagely. The other council members nodded in solemn agreement. "No more, is Master Krell. Concerning, it is, that sense his fall before now, we did not." There was a pregnant pause—no one quite knew what to say. Recent events had disturbed everyone at the temple who knew, especially the Council.
"In any case," Master Windu broke the heavy silence. "You are in need of a mentor." Gesturing gracefully with one hand to Obi-Wan, he continued, "Master Kenobi has offered to continue your training for the time being. If you accept, he will be your interim Master."
"If you are willing, Aruna," Obi-Wan added gently. "I would be honored."
Aruna carefully took in the scene laid before her, eyes glancing hesitantly between the two Masters. Then, hazel orbs finally settling on Obi-Wan, she intoned with a small smile and bow, "It is I who would be honored, Master Kenobi." Obi-Wan returned her smile with a soft one of his own.
"It is settled, then," Master Windu concluded. "You are dismissed, Padawan."
With that, Aruna took one last bow and spun on her heel to exit the Council's chambers, thoughts swirling tumultuously. 'I would be honored,' he said. But did he mean it?
Let me know what you thought in the comments. Thank you for reading, and may the Force be with you!
