Ride
"I thought you said this'd take a week!" Kid yelled out in frustration as you got home.
He slammed the door shut behind him, with his real hand thankfully. The metal one would've destroyed it.
"I thought that's all it'd take!" You yelled back, tossing your backpack to the couch.
Hobbes let out a distressed meow from the kitchen counter. He never appreciated loud voices.
"Well you were fucking wrong!"
"Oh, you don't say?" You replied sarcastically as you snatched your cat up before heading back to the living room to take a seat. "Who would've thought that looking for a tiny, stupid orb would be hard to find in a mountainous desert?"
"Cut your shitty attitude." Kid growled as he sat by you.
"You're one to talk."
He turned his head to glare at you but you simply returned the favor. Hobbes squirmed in your arms, want to get away from the two of you.
"I liked you better when you were mopey."
You scoffed. "That's not what you were saying a few days ago."
"You didn't have such a damn mouth on you then."
"What? Are you used to women just not speaking their minds?"
"Well, no actually." He huffed and slung his arm over the back of the couch, effectively putting it over your shoulders at the same time.
"Personal space there big guy." You let Hobbes loose to bounce across Kid's lap and run away to one of the bedrooms and moved his arm back to his side.
"Am I not good enough to get cozy with you?" Kid sneered as he scooted closer in retaliation.
"Not now and not ever." You said confidently, flicking the end of his nose.
"Would you two stop picking on each other." Law came through the door with a groan. He took his sweet time getting inside. "All your arguing is getting rediculous."
"We aren't arguing." You said in return. "Just giving each other a hard time."
"She gets it." Kid chuckled.
"Forget it." Law flopped on the other side of you, scowling to himself. "How many more locations do we need to check?"
"Well..." You pulled the list you'd made some time ago from a pocket and frowned. Almost every spot you'd written on it was crossed out. Only a few remained and your odds weren't looking good. "There's three more."
"It's gotta be in one of those places." Kid said confidently.
"Hopefully." You sighed, tossed the paper to the coffee table, and leaned your head back to rest.
It'd been a busy day. It'd been a busy week. And as much as the guys weren't going to like it, all of you needed a break. You were all worn out from the dull, monotonous searching and ready for some time to relax.
"I'm calling it."
"Calling what?" Law murmured. He was fighting the need to fall asleep and the poor man had only just gotten home.
"We're taking a break. The next couple days we're sleeping in and doing nothing."
"We can't do that." Kid growled.
"Can too."
"(Y/n)-ya has a point."
"I thought you wanted back to our world?" Kid raised his voice in anger. You could feel him tensing up beside you and reached over to place a hand on his metal arm. He couldn't feel it, but the action was enough to have him settle in his seat and wait for Law to continue.
"I'm exhausted from using my devil fruit so much, your temper is rising more so than usual Eustass-ya, and (Y/n)-ya is barely keep us together. We need some time to recuperate so we can be efficient. Searching is useless of we can't actually focus on the task at hand."
Kid grumbled and shifted around but as soon as you gave his arm a pat, he nodded in agreement. "Fine. I guess we can give it a couple days."
You looked at Law and his eyes flicked to your hand, still resting on Kid's arm before he mouthed the words, 'thank you.'
It'd been hectic for all three of you since they came. You'd all need to work together to get this done and that was something you were beginning to understand.
----
After coming home, none of you had a problem taking it easy and watching some TV to pass the time before calling it a night. The morning started just fine. You and Law sat outside together for coffee while Kid slept in more so than usual. This had quickly become your morning ritual.
Law was an early bird like you and was up with the sun. You'd make coffee and he'd join you on the porch swing to chat and wake up properly until Kid got up. He'd tell you all the differences between his world and yours and you'd question him on how it was possible for half the stuff to work like it did. Transponder snails still baffled you. The idea that vehicles could run off of cola was insane. But the one thing that got you the most, was the unusual mix of modern and old things.
They used ships made of wood but Law had a submarine. Villages were common but so was industrialization. They had advanced technology, on par with what you had here, but they still stuck to things that would be considered extremely outdated in your world. And the funny thing was, you were liking the sound of it.
Even if you weren't sure a world like that could exist, you'd like it to. It sounded so surreal and so much better than what you had here. Pirates didn't have to worry about school or the more annoying parts of your life like taxes and bills.
After telling you all about the mink race this morning, both of you went back inside when you ran out of coffee. You couldn't help but do a double take as you walked in and saw Kid laying down on the couch, passed out.
"Did he really get out of bed to sleep there instead?" You asked Law.
"It appears so." Law sighed and rolled his eyes.
"I just wanna know how he stays so fit if he's sleeping and eating all the time."
"Stupidity must burn through the calories."
You muffled your laughter with a hand and shook your head. "His not stupid."
"Are you really going to defend him?"
"He's just..... different."
"If you say so. He's going to be pissed when I put something on the tv." Law suddenly smiled. He and Kid had a hard time agreeing on things to watch. Law liked documentaries, Kid liked anything with action or fighting. They were impossible to please.
"Not for long." You answered. "I think I'll take him out for something."
For a moment, you thought he would object to you being alone with him since it didn't involve "work." But he just nodded.
"Sounds good. I could use some alone time."
He moved to a free seat and got the tv going, having caught on to how the technology worked in this world surprisingly fast. As soon as the sound started filtering into the room, Kid jolted and grumbled.
"Turn that shit off."
"No thanks Eustass-ya."
"I swear I'll–"
"You guys fight like an old married couple." You tossed your car keys at Kid and they landed on his bare stomach. "C'mon, you and I are going out."
"What happened to taking a break?" His head fell over the arm of the couch as he scowled at you. Some of his tousled red locks still managed to stay in his face, partially blocking the view of his eyes.
"So you don't want to take the car for a spin?"
He pushed his hair back and his eyes widened as a huge grin worked onto his face. "'Bout time you showed me how to work it!"
"Get a shirt on and lets go." You shook your head and headed outside, doing your best to hide a smirk as Kid scrambled to his feet.
You waited out by the car for him. He still had the keys and now that you thought about it, tossing them to him was probably a bad idea. You wanted to take him to an empty parking lot before letting him take over so he'd have room to make mistakes. He was going to pout the second you took the keys back to drive him there.
"Move over sweetheart." He took long strides to the car, practically bouncing with excitement.
"You can start driving after I get us somewhere better for you to take over." You held out a hand for the keys and he begrudgingly handed them over.
When you both got in your seats and took off, he went back to being excited. It would be difficult to put a damper on his good mood.
"So I get to drive us around after this."
"Ehhhhh, we can talk about that."
"Why teach me if you aren't going to let me drive?"
"You really wanted to learn." You shrugged. "And I guess I trust you enough to not ruin my car."
"Course I won't ruin it." He scoffed. "Machines are my forte."
The drive to the local highschool parking lot was quick and with it being the weekend conveniently enough, it was empty. Kid had plenty of room to get a feel for the vehicle.
"Okay, rules." You pulled the keys out of the ignition and faced Kid. "You gotta listen to what I say, I've been driving this baby for some time now, I know what I'm doing."
"I figured as much."
"You don't have a license and I don't want to risk getting pulled over so when I decide you're okay to go out on the road, you will follow the speed limit and not do anything illegal. We'll get in some deep shit if you're caught driving without a license."
"How deep?"
"Like owing a lot of money that I don't want to spend because you refused to listen."
"Fine."
"Alright." You let out a tense sigh, suddenly nervous. "Be nice to her."
"Her?" He snickered as you both got out and swapped places.
"Yeah her. Isn't your ship a she?"
"Course the Victoria Punk is a she."
"And so's the car."
"How do I fix the seat?" Kid grumbled.
He was scrunched up and shoved against the steering wheel, trying to find the lever to move the seat and give himself some space. You'd done it for yourself once or twice to give Law more leg room and he'd caught on.
"Underneath, right in the middle."
When he had that adjusted he motioned for you to give him the keys.
"Not yet." You giggled as he started to become frustrated with you. "Get your mirrors adjusted first. You need to be able to see behind you and to either side."
"That's annoying."
"You can have the keys afterwards."
With a huff, he did as you told him, getting them how he needed. When that was done, he looked at you expectantly, like he thought there'd be something else to do before you'd hand the keys over. The look quickly morphed into a smile when you offered them up.
You thought he'd shove them in the ignition but he waited, still watching you.
"What?"
"Aren't you always nagging me about the seatbelt? Put it on dumbass."
"Rude."
"Can't say I don't learn."
He had you there. You strapped in and leaned closer.
"Ready for your crash course in driving standard?"
"I've been ready, let's get this shit figured out."
You couldn't help but grin. "So you've got three pedals, the clutch, breaks, and gas. Clutch is used to help you change gears and when you want to do that, you'll use this."
When you tapped the gear shift, he placed his hand around it like he'd seen you do so many times.
"You're going to want to keep your hand on it at all times so you don't have to search for it when your driving. It's got five gears, they're all labeled but we won't leave the parking lot until you have the motions memorized. You don't want to have to look for what you're shifting to while on the road....."
Kid listened intently as you walked him through the basics and pointed things out. This was one of the rare times when you were in complete control of everything surrounding you and it made a difference.
As the week had gone on, you slowly became less brooding and moody but there were still moments. It was to be expected but Kid had found he was enjoying seeing you come out of your shell. It was like you were a whole different person. One who wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind and actually found things to enjoy. You were having a good time teaching him how to drive and for some reason, Kid found that was half the appeal of learning.

Sorry it took so long to get this chapter out guys! This story will be updating a little more slowly for a bit. I'm trying to rotate between two stories at once for the most part so I can start knocking out everything that's ongoing. My goal is to finish three before posting a brand new one and I think I should be able to do that in roughly a month. Things should speed back up by then~
