Into Town

"Here's the box." You pushed the one you wanted to the edge of the attic where Law was.

The space was too small for him but you fit real easy. So you got what you needed and let him take it down the ladder. You hopped down after him, coughing from all the dust you disrupted and breathed in. Kid stood in the hallway, grumbling about being too hungry for all this.

"We can pick up some fast food on the way to the store." You said, beginning to get tired of his complaining.

"Fast food?" Law asked.

You poked through the box on the floor and pulled out some clothes you thought would fit Kid. They were originally your uncle's who was a pretty big guy himself. He used to do a lot of farm and ranch work too so the clothes would help Kid fit in a lot better as well.

"Here." You handed a pile to Kid. "Change into those. And yeah, never had fast food before?" You addressed Law lastly.

"No."

"Well if you guys aren't too picky you should like it."

Kid wandered off to change and came back looking even grouchier than before. He kept his boots and they fit the outfit pretty well. The worn jeans he had on were a bit loose around the waist but they stayed put. You'd hoped that the long sleeved button up shirt would fit around his prosthetic but unfortunately it didn't. He had torn the sleeve off to get it to work.

"I look like a damn clown." He snarled.

"You almost look like a normal rancher." You shot back as you dug around in the box some more. "Here, this should hide your arm." You handed him a jacket.

It was too warm for one technically but you'd see if you could make him put up with it. The buildings were air conditioned. He shoved it on, glaring at you all the while and to your relief, it fit. Sort of. It hung around his normal arm well but was very tight around his metal one. It was obvious there was something wrong with the limb, but at least it was out of view.

"Okay." You started mentally preparing yourself for this. Fast food and groceries. You could do this. "Let's go."

"If we dress so strangely maybe we should get some new clothes as well." Law suggested.

You got your keys and purse and headed outside. They followed close behind.

"I really don't want to be out all day."

"The sooner we get this done the sooner we can leave." He said.

"In theory." You shot back. "But sure, if we can make it quick."

When you got to the car, you were met with a couple problems. First, they seemed to have no idea what a car was. Kid lit up at the sight of the machine and slowly circled it, taking in every detail. Law poked around the windows to get a peek inside. The second problem was the back seats. There was no way Kid would fit back there, he was too broadly built. Law would fit, but he'd be cramped up for sure.

"So I'm driving." You hesitated before lightly pushing Kid away from the driver side. "You'll have to be on the other side."

"What about me?" Law asked right as he noticed the back seats.

"You're going to have to sit back there. He won't fit." You pointed to Kid.

His face fell as he realized it was unavoidable. The look would've been funny if you were in a mood for jokes. Too bad you weren't. Really you were feeling more and more ready to crawl in a hole as time went. You were going to hide yourself away once you got home.

Law managed to fold himself up in the backseat and Kid took the front with a smug look of victory. When you had the car started, Kid immediately tried asking you half a dozen questions about it at once and you answered all the basics about cars you knew. It was interesting to see him go from snarky to completely serious and questioning in a matter of seconds. Law stayed quiet and just listened to what you had to say, probably figuring Kid would ask about everything that he wanted to know.

The best part about where you lived was you could drive about 15 minutes in one direction and reach town. 15 minutes in the other and you'd be in the middle of the desert. It had a good balance of small town feel and not quite city, but definitely urban.

The guys were in awe of everything around them and it earned you some much appreciated silence at times. That was until you went through the McDonald's drive thru. Kid was all about the idea of getting burgers, and a lot of them at that, while Law refused to get anything with bread. Apparently he hated it. It turned into the redhead ordering just about one of everything with enough fries to feed a small army and the very moody Law settling for chicken nuggets. Still breaded, but apparently tolerable for him.

You had a hard time finding your appetite lately and found that you weren't hungry at the time. At least you didn't feel hungry, it was hard to tell when you were these days.

It cost an arm and a leg for all of it but it wasn't like you were broke. And you felt ready to pay any price to get these two out of your hair. You decided to take them to the mall next so they could get some clothes. Law was sure to remind you about it during the drive.

When you pulled into the parking lot, Kid was still shoveling food into his mouth. The guy ate at a terrifying speed and he didn't seem like he'd be slowing down any time soon. You'd never met someone who could eat that much. If you weren't sure about being hungry before, you sure as hell weren't now after seeing how much he put away.

When they'd gotten out of the car, he was licking the salt from his fries off his fingers with a satisfied grin. It reminded you of some feral, fat cat.

"You didn't eat anything." Law noted as he stretched his legs out.

"Just not hungry." You grabbed all the trash out of the car since Kid hadn't. You weren't about to let him turn it into a dumpster on wheels.

"When did you last have something?"

"I dunno." You replied, exasperated. "Sometime yesterday. Look, we have things to go over before you guys get your shit."

The topic change wasn't smooth but you were losing your patience and it was beginning to show.

"First off, don't use those weird powers you have going on. Period. Second, don't talk about coming from another world or mention anything along those lines. And third, stay close. I don't want to have to go on a search for either of you guys." But then again it would be handy to lose both of them.

They both nodded along. Kid was in a better mood since he ate more than any person ever should and you guessed Law just understood you wanted to get in and out.

You were glad it was a week day. All the kids were in school and most adults were working their jobs so the stores weren't overly full. Of course the guys were still enjoying the differences between your town and wherever they came from, but they didn't bother you as much about it all. It was like they could almost see the storm cloud of emotions building up over your head.

They had shoes so you didn't bother with that. But you made sure they both got a couple pairs of jeans, they were a necessity for the area, and as many shirts as they wanted. Any other time you would have cringed at how much it all cost, but you didn't blink an eye at it now. You were glad they behaved themselves like you'd asked. They kept any comments that might have popped in their heads to themselves.

By the time it was done, you just wanted to go home but there was still the grocery store to go through. The entire drive to it you were mentally talking yourself through it. Part of the reason you had put it off was some of the people who worked there knew you and Wren. They'd want to check in with you and that was what you were dreading the most.

"Same rules still apply." You told the guys as you marched across the parking lot to the grocery store.

You were on a mission to get this done and it had them picking up the pace to keep up with you. Maybe having two tough looking guys with you would deter people from wanting to talk to you. Probably not. Everyone here was too friendly.

With the way Kid ate earlier, you assumed he ate a lot all the time so you were getting double what you originally thought you'd need. Both Kid and Law trailed behind you dutifully, spooking off other shoppers who got too close without even meaning to. Though you did see the redhead straight up mad dog a few people. It somehow didn't surprise you.

You were lucky to avoid dealing with anyone you knew who worked at the store but that luck ran dry at the checkout. You picked the lane that had someone you didn't know working it, but to your dismay they were replaced with someone you did know.

"(Y/n), I'm glad to see you out and about!" The woman greeted you.

She was an older woman, with white hair sprinkled in to her normally brown locks. A few strands had fallen out of her loose bun and fell around her slightly wrinkled face. Soft blue eyes stared at you kindly with a hint of sadness. You appreciated her attempt to be normal, but she was still hoping to get a little more information at of you.

"Hey Charlotte." You offered her a smile back.

"I see you're making friends." She nodded to Kid and Law as they dropped groceries onto the conveyor belt and bickered back and forth.

"You could say that."

"How are you holding up? Yesterday had to have been rough for you."

Of course she knew about the funeral. You swore everyone had somehow caught wind of it and you wished they didn't make it their business.

"I'm fine. I just, uh, need a bit of time to adjust."

"What about your mom? How's she doing?"

You took a quick breath and focused on shoving your card in the reader to pay and get out as fast as you could. You couldn't handle much more of this.

"She never called and never came but I expected as much."

"Oh." Charlotte looked more than a little taken aback, like you mother should have suddenly started caring. "I-I'm sorry to hear that."

You shrugged. "It is what it is."

When she gave you the receipt, you accepted it and quickly gave her another smile, even if you didn't want to.

"I'll see you some other time Charlotte."

"You too (Y/n)." She called softly as you retreated with Kid and Law.

The woman meant well but it was like her and just about every other older person around here felt the need to know everything that was happening around town. It would've been nicer if she asked how you were and left it at that. That wouldn't have left you feeling like your insides were twisting in on themselves.

Once outside and loading up the car, Kid smirked and bent down to talk over your shoulder. "So who died?"

It was supposed to come out as a joke, but it felt like he was mocking you.

"My aunt." You grit your teeth and answered, getting behind the wheel.

It was met with an awkward silence as they piled in. It was definitely meant to be a joke. He wasn't good at fully reading the atmosphere apparently.

"I'm sorry-"

You whipped around and cut Law off before he could finish the thought. "Don't you fucking say it. I've heard that more over the past few days than anyone should ever have to hear in their lifetime."

Silence again as you shoved the key in the ignition and pulled out of the parking space with a little too much force.

"And you aren't sorry. You don't know me and you never knew her. We aren't friends. Stop trying to act like it."

You fumbled for the radio as you watched the road. When it was on, you cranked it up until it was obnoxiously loud, ruining any hopes either of them might have had for conversation. You had enough of them for the day.
