Closer

You nibbled at your bottom lip thoughtfully. Maybe you agreed to talk with Law a little too fast. There was a lot weighing on you, but most of it you couldn't figure out how to put into words. He could sense you hesitating and decided to push you along.

"Tell me about Wren-ya."

"What about her?" You closed your computer and placed it on the coffee table, sinking the room back into full darkness.

"Why was she important to you?"

"She was family." After some readjusting under your blanket, you faced Law. "Technically she was my aunt but she felt more like a mom to me."

"What happened to your real parents?"

"They left when I was young. I don't remember my dad. My mom gave up custody of me to her brother when I was about eight and I haven't seen her since. She's called once or twice but it's always been short. I'm pretty sure Wren made her do it in hopes of us having some kind of relationship."

"So they aren't dead, your parents?"

"Nah. But they might as well be dead to me. When my uncle passed, they both called up as soon as they got the news. First time I'd ever heard my dad's voice and all he wanted to know was if he was mentioned in the will or not. Mom was hoping to get a cut of what he'd left behind too. They didn't care that he was gone, just what handouts they'd get from it."

"Is it safe to ask if they got anything?" He asked with a bit of a playful tone.

You grinned and let out a small giggle. "They didn't get jack shit."

"Nice." Law chuckled with you. "Tell me about your friends."

"Well...." You frowned. "I don't really have any. I fell out of touch with my old ones. They didn't want to grow up and I already had. We didn't mix well anymore so we all moved on. I hadn't really made any new ones since. There's a few people I talk with through school sometimes, but that's it. What about you and Kid?"

"Us?" He scoffed. "We aren't friends, more like rivals. But I have my crew and he has his."

"Alright, humor me. What's your crew like." You still weren't sure about believing the whole pirate thing, but it wouldn't hurt to roll with it.

"They're a bunch of idiots." His face fell and you struggled not to bust out laughing for fear of waking Kid. Something told you he'd be a grumpy asshole all day if he was woken up.

"How so?"

"Don't get me wrong, they're loyal and caring, but that only gets you so far. They goof off all the time and someone is always breaking one thing or another on the ship."

"They sound like a handful."

"That's an understatement."

You felt yourself starting to doze off and nestled in against the arm of the couch, propping up one of the decorative pillows under your head as another question came to mind, one you'd asked Kid.

"Do you have family?"

He tapped his fingers against his thigh as he debated answering. The growing silence went on long enough for your eyelids to get heavy. For the time being, there was nothing more comfortable than the couch and Hobbes agreed with you. He snuggled up beside you, purring happily.

"I used to. I had parents and a sister."

He startled you a bit, waking you up enough to figure out what he said and formulate a response. "What happened to them?"

"We were all sick with an incurable disease. Everyone in my hometown was in fact. And instead of trying to find a cure for it, the government segregated us from the rest of the world and systematically killed us off."

Your breath hitched in your throat. Whether that was true or not, it sounded awful.

"And your parents and sister?"

"Killed, like everyone else."

"That's rough." What else were you supposed to say? Sorry for your loss just wouldn't cut it. Saying it would make you a hypocrite anyway.

"Rough." He smirked. "Yes it was."

"...But you said you were sick too, right?"

"Yeah, I was too."

"If it was incurable, how come you don't look sick?"

"Well, long story short, I found a group of pirates that took me in. One of them decided to try finding a cure for me, taking me around the world practically in search of a doctor that would know what to do. He ended up becoming for me what Wren probably was for you. We never found a real cure per-se, but he did find my devil fruit and it worked just as well."

"So your devil fruit kept you from dying."

"Exactly. Its an ability that allows the user to do extreme modifications, do intense operations easily, and even cure diseases with no known cures."

You closed your eyes as you snuggled into the pillow and smiled. "It would've been cool if you were here before my uncle died. Maybe you could've saved him then."

"He was sick?"

You nodded. "Yeah, and it ended up being the death of him."

Law let out a light sigh. "My caretaker died right after giving me the devil fruit. Or killed is the more appropriate term. He had to betray the pirates I joined to get to it."

"He sounds like he was a real kind guy."

"He was. I bet Wren was too."

----

"Why aren't we doing anything yet?"

"(Y/n)-ya was up most of the night putting together a list of the places we'll need to check. She's still tired."

"She'll be fine, let's just wake her up."

"Eustass-ya!"

The couch shifted as someone else sat on it. They let out a low snicker as they began prodding at your face with something cold and hard. "What? She'll be fine."

There was a bit of grumbling but the other person didn't reply.

"Wake up sweetheart~ We've got shit to do."

The cold you were able to identify as metal moved to poke your nose, which you immediately scrunched up in response.

"C'mon, the sooner we get this done, the better."

You let out a whine and burrowed under the blanket, squirming around a bit to get comfortable again.

"You're a stubborn one, aren't ya?"

Your blanket was pulled away and you were immediately hit with a wall of cool air. Finally, you cracked your eyes open to glare at Kid who was staring down at you triumphantly.

"Let me be." You groaned. "Can't I have a moment's peace in my own damn house?"

"No, now let's get going."

You frowned, blinking a few times to help yourself wake up. Kid seemed to be handling his burns well but he was still almost as red as his hair.

"You can't go out sunburned like you are."

"Can too."

You looked to Law for help as you sat up fully, stretching to work the kinks out of your neck and spine. He pursed his lips, not wanting to chime in, but your steady stare made him buckle fast.

"If you go out like that your burns will get worse Eustass-ya."

"Why do you care?" Kid snapped back.

"I don't. I'd just rather not put up with your attitude when you're complaining about how much you hurt after we told you to stay home."

"Same." You sighed.

"So what, are we not doing anything today?" Kid grumbled angrily.

"We never said that." Law answered. "(Y/n)-ya and I can head out for a bit, you'll be doing nothing today."

You didn't like the idea of leaving Kid alone and unsupervised in your home but Law was right, searching still had to be done. You could head out with him and hope that Kid was smart enough to not burn the house down.

"So I'm supposed to sit here and look pretty?" Kid sneered unhappily.

"Well you aren't pretty, but sure." You got up and switched on the TV, tossing the remote to Kid. "You can watch something to kill time. There's plenty of food in the fridge, some you won't even have to work the stove or oven for. Don't answer the door, don't mess with my stuff, and don't give Hobbes a hard time. We'll be back in a few hours."

"What am I? A child?" He glared back at you, not liking having to take orders from someone else.

Law chuckled as you ignored the question and headed to your room to change. The sooner you went out for the day, the sooner you'd get to come back home.

----

"So what are your plans for after we're gone (Y/n)-ya?"

You and Law had walked a distance from the house, checking along the roads and ditches for their mysterious orb. All you'd found so far were a lot of weeds and trash.

"I haven't thought that far out." You answered as you reached into a particular patch of overgrown weeds.

It'd caught your eye and when you moved them around a bit, you found an unhappy snake coiling in on itself. It was harmless, but you wanted to check around it. Law watched with amusement as you picked the reptile up gingerly, ignoring it's hissed protests, and tossed it to the side. It landed in the road, unharmed and only slightly miffed as it slithered away to a new patch of grass to hide in. After checking around the spot it was in, you only found more trash. The poor critter didn't deserve putting up with you only for you to find nothing in it's spot.

"That's not all that far out. We'll be gone before you know it."

"While you guys are my most pressing matter as of right now, I had other big things going on before you showed up. I hadn't been thinking ahead for a while."

"Hmm." Law hummed as he stepped ahead of you and to the side, making enough room for a lone car to pass by. "What about all the work you've been doing on the computer?"

He was either getting used to your technology fast or already had a decent idea about it.

"My school stuff? I've got a couple more years till I'm done with that."

"What are you even going to school for?"

"Liberal arts."

"I have no idea what that means." He said honestly, kicking a rock down the road.

"Well..." You paused. "It's basically a general education. You learns how to write better, go over simple math, English, and really anything else that looks interesting."

"And what's that used for?"

And that was why you'd paused a moment ago. He'd asked what you were going to school for and you knew he meant what you were learning, but you interpreted it differently. Why were you in school? Would you really even use your degree? And what kind of job looked for degrees like that in particular?

"I don't see how that matters when you guys aren't sticking around anyway." You replied with annoyance, more because you didn't have an actual answer for him than anything else.

But he only smirked, taking your attitude in stride. "You sound almost like you'll be sad to see us go."

You scoffed. "As if. You guys are rude, you eat a lot, you're picky, and you've literally done nothing but mooch off of me while demanding I help you find your stupid toy."

"Toy, huh? It makes sense that it'd seem like that to you."

He was practically agreeing with you and it was...aggravating. There was supposed to be two sides to this and there just wasn't. Only him nodding along and adding his two cents.

"Okay, so let's say this is a totally different world from your own like you said."

"It is, but continue."

"Why would you accept it so quickly? Wouldn't it make sense that someone would be fucking with you instead or something? Kid said you guys are pirates, you've gotta have enemies."

"We do and plenty of them. But I wouldn't suggest that any of them are clever enough to put something this elaborate together. Not to mention it really wouldn't benefit them any to do so."

That made sense you guessed. Why confuse the enemy when you had them instead of getting rid of them outright? That wasn't all that great of a question on your part.

"But why were you still so calm about it? Isn't it scary to be in a totally new place?"

"Isn't it scary to be on your own for the first time?" He shot back. "Of course it's intimidating, but panicking over the situation wouldn't change a thing. It's important to take in the information presented and do what I can to work with it. That's where you came in. We just so happened to end up near your home and it wasn't hard to recognize that you know this world much better than Eustass-ya and I could ever hope to. It made sense to try and understand our environment and have your help to get back home faster."

"You make it sound simple."

"That's because it is."

You were quiet as you went along, not stopping your search for a second. You highly doubted you'd come across the orb today, but it'd be just your luck that it would be somewhere nearby the moment you decided to stop looking.

"I don't know if this means anything to you." Law spoke up again. "But I think I'm glad it was your home we happened across. I don't think most people would be as kind as you've been."

That made you frown. "I haven't been kind."

"I beg to differ. You weren't obligated to buy us clothes or humor us when it came to food or entertainment. It even sounds like you're considering teaching Eustass-ya to drive that car of yours. That all sounds like things done out of the kindness of your heart to me (Y/n)-ya."

You sighed. "It's a real problem."

"No." Law smiled at you brightly as he fell in step beside you. "I think it's one of your best traits."

You didn't want to, but you blushed. Maybe he and Kid were growing on you some. They weren't all that bad.
