Chapter Five

"Ross, you need to leave."

"No."

"At least eat something!"

"No."

"It's been a month, man! You can't live like this! Have you been sleeping very well?"

"No."

Ross heard Adam sigh in defeat. "Ross, please. You haven't been eating or sleeping. We can't get you to leave. Just look at yourself! Torturing yourself isn't going to make Max wake up sooner. We're all worried about you."

Ross didn't respond, just watched Max sleeping peacefully in the hospital bed. The stitches had been removed last week. Now there were just two more ugly scars that joined the rest.

"You know what, Ross? You're gonna leave this room, and I will drag you out kicking and screaming if I have to."

He gripped the red-head's hand tighter. "No."

"It wasn't a choice."

Adam grabbed his arm and hauled him out of the chair, dragging him out of the room. "Let go of me, Adam!" Ross struggled against his friend's seemingly iron grip, glancing back at Max until the comatose man was out of sight.

Adam whirled around, letting go of Ross' arm, and the brunette's legs buckled, and Adam caught him before he hit the floor. "Look at yourself, Ross! You can barely stand! You look like shit, man! I'm taking you home, and you're gonna stay there until I say so!"

Ross' head was pounding. He was out of breath from just walking a few steps, and he was clinging to Adam like a lifeline.

"Okay."

His vision swam before his eyes, but he still saw Adam's relieved grin. "I mean, I was going to take you anyway, but you not struggling every step of the way sure makes it easier."

Ross just stared at him. "Just...just prom...promise you will b-bring me back..."

And there was the sigh. "One week. One week at home, with no hospitals, and I'll bring you back."

"P-p-promise?"

"Promise."

And just like that Ross collapsed, overcome with fatigue.

"Hey, hey, hey. Come one, Ross. Let's get to the car. Car, and then sleep. Okay?"

"Don't wanna sleep." Ross' mumbled words were barely a whisper.

"Why not?"

"Nightmares."

Eyes closed, he couldn't see Adam's pained expression, but he could feel it in the way his body tensed up. "We'll work something out. Maybe sleeping in your own bed and not an uncomfortable hospital chair will make it better. But first we gotta get to the car."

"M'kay."

The walk out of the hospital was blurry and unclear. All Ross really remembered was leaning on Adam like a crutch. It was like he was sleepwalking, and when he next woke up, they were in Adam's car.

"Wha...?" Adam looked over at him.

"Don't worry, Ross. Sleep. I got you."

And Ross knew no more.
