Prayers

Lane

It felt like an eternity for Doc to show up and he called care flight right away. "Her blood pressure is dropping!" He started listening through a stethoscope and was moving quickly. "There's still a heartbeat."

The helicopter showed up and I'm completely helpless. "I'm going ride along with them, someone needs to drive Lane." He said as he rushed out the door with my wife. I ran up and took her hand while she's on the stretcher. "I'll be there as soon as I can, everything going to be okay," I said as I ran alongside the medics pushing her away.

"Come on, we're taking you," Kyle said, but then Megan approached.

"It was an accident, I'm so sorry." She was pulling on my arms and crying as I'm trying to get to Kyles's car, so I grabbed her arm and squeezed it.

"I fucking hate you, and if either of them dies, you'll meet the real me! You better just get the fuck out of town!" I'm seething with anger as Ron pulled her off me.

The situation is bad enough and she was really going to cost me time now? Fuck her and fuck Ron.

Kyle opened the back door and I slid in, then he and Cara got in the front. "Hurry Kyle, if she delivers, Lane needs to be there." She said.

I sat there with my head in my hands. "How the hell did this happen?"

"I don't fucking know, but I did call the Sheriff, and Megan can explain to him what happened. She's gone crazy!" Kyle said.

"Jesus, she's bleeding to death." I just realized, and started getting myself worked up. Cara climbed in the back seat and made me look at her.

"She's going to be fine, and so is the baby. You went through too much to get here, Lane. Someone is watching out for her, I promise." She said.

"Like I was supposed to watch out for her?" I asked, and she shook her head.

"Megan is not a violent person. I have no clue what happened." She said.

"I'll tell you what happened. She pushed my wife, I saw it with my own damn eyes. We did everything we could, and even avoided any situation where we had to see her, this is crazy." I said, then Cara's phone rang.

She answered it. "What's wrong with her?" She asked.

"Well, keep us updated." She said, and put her phone away.

"Who was that?" I asked urgently.

"Amberly, they're also taking Megan in saying she's losing her baby or something." She said.

"Who gives a fuck? Ron better get her the hell out of town, she might think she knows me, but she has no fucking clue who I am." I snapped.

The ride to the hospital took forever. "Someone should call my dad, I just can't," I said as Kyle pulled up outside the hospital and I took off running inside.

"I'm looking for my wife, Danica Morgan," I said to the woman at the desk.

"Yes, she's in surgery. The doctor that came with her will be out to talk to you shortly." She said. Soon after, a nurse had me sign a bunch of papers giving them permission to treat both my wife and my baby.

"I have to stay here?" I asked, when I finished signing my name.

"Yes, I'm sorry. It's an emergency situation and they need room to work." She said, and I ran my hands through my hair. How the hell did we end up here?

I paced in front of the waiting room chairs and Kyle came running in with Cara.

"Any word?" They asked.

"Just that she's in surgery and Doc Hubbard will be out to talk to me soon. They're making me wait here." I said.

"Why don't you have a seat?" Kyle said.

"Are you shitting me?" I asked.

"There's Doc Hubbard," Cara said, and I could see worry all over his face.

"How is she?" I asked.

"Have a seat so we can talk." He said, and we all sat down. I'm leaning on my elbows and my leg is bouncing.

He looked at all of us as he spoke. "They have her in surgery now for a placental abruption, thankfully it's not a complete abruption. This means the placenta tore away from the uterus, but thankfully, it wasn't the whole thing. It could be a lot worse. A complete abruption would be much worse. She has a fractured arm and a concussion, but she should be okay." He looked at me. "You are about to be a dad." He smiled at me.

"The baby's okay?" I asked.

"We'll know more once the baby is delivered, but the heartbeat is strong. Of course, this is very traumatic for both the baby and Danica, but I am feeling positive." He said.

"Do I get to go back?" I asked.

He shook his head. "That wouldn't be best, I'm sorry. They've got a team in there waiting in case of any complications. What happened tonight?" He asked.

"Megan, she pushed her down the stairs," I said.

"You don't know that for sure yet," Cara said.

"I saw it, Cara." I snapped at her.

Suddenly the doors opened, and there's Ron carrying Megan in his arms.

"Don't move a muscle," Kyle said, and put his hand on my shoulder.

"I'll go check on Megan, hang in there, Lane. Remember, you're about to be a father." He said, then walked away.

"I wouldn't wish harm on their baby, but this sure as fuck isn't the time to have to see them," I said.

"Just stay calm," Cara said.

I watched as all three walked away. We waited, I paced, and Cara along with Kyle tried to calm me. They called Dad and let him know we are at the hospital, but I asked them not to tell him about the fall. He will worry himself sick.

"How much more are we going to have to face?" I asked, and they just looked at me.

"Try prayer, it always makes me feel better," Cara said.

"That's all I've done in my mind since it happened," I said, then started pacing again.
