Chapter Three

Only a couple of days ago I was complaining that I hated it here and now it's gone. Great. This is going to look good on my CV isn't it? Fired for being two hours late, parents getting divorced, inheritance now lost, boyfriend cheated on me. Please tell me I don't have to put any of that stuff on. I wander down to my parking bay and stare at my car.

I look over to my sign saying "Kelly Kennington's Space. Keep off". I stuck it up there on my first day because, well basically, I thought I would have my own private space. I didn't think the job would be like this. Typing endlessly for nine hours and having to listen to Nina sobbing over her cat running away. If I was her cat I would run away from her, she literally doesn't stop crying.

I gulp and smile sadly then get into my car. Goodbye office, you wasted my life, but I loved you. Wow, I feel like I'm in a movie. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself now. No, no, don't get all mopey now. Today you're sulking about a job; tomorrow you're bawling over a lost cat and irritating your co-workers. I turn my head away from it. That was today's problem. Tomorrow's another day. Now, let's find out about this new maid.

I drive off and soon arrive at home. I breathe heavily and close my eyes. Where did my life go so wrong? I just want to leave it all behind and take a break from it. I start to imagine myself on a beach someplace hot with a hunky barman giving me free drinks. The sun beaming down, me getting tanned, the sea lapping on my feet. Ahh... Heaven. Screams of rage come from the doorway which take me away from my island paradise. Who the heck's that? I drowsily look out of the window to see Mum and Daddy arguing. Wow, it looks heated. I put my ear to the window and try to listen. This probably doesn't look pretty from outside. Hang on, oh my Lord I'm stupid. I can open the window to eavesdrop on them.

I pull it down and stick my head out. I hear Mum's voice. She sounds really angry.

"So, when did you plan on telling me your company had gone bankrupt Pietro? Next month, next year, when you had lost our house?" she yells.

"Hey, hey, hey. Wanda, we're not losing this house", he answers. "We're fine. Just have a few..." He quietens until what he's saying can't be heard.

"We have a few what?" Oh no, she's got her bossy voice on. God help Daddy. He scratches his head and looks around for an excuse not to say something. He doesn't find anything and flops his hands down.

"We have a few minor finances. Tiny really, literally nothing. I mean it'll be gone so soon. In fact sooner than soon, I think..." he mumbles, but is interrupted by Mum screaming.

"How much?" she says simply.

"Okay, I'm just going to blurt it out", he starts and coughs. "$35,000,000". Mum doesn't say anything, just nods understandingly and walks back inside. Well, that's over, finally. I wander over, look at Dad and walk in.

"So, you heard all of that then?" he asks, and when I turn around he's staring at the floor, looking very sorry for himself. I nod and he smiles sadly. I walk into the study and see Mum on the laptop. Wow, this must be important; she never goes on it. Silently I look over her shoulder to see her on a holiday website.

"Where you heading off to then?" I enquire, but as soon as I finish my sentence she slams the laptop lid down and swings round on the chair.

"It's none of your business Kelly", she answers with a stern look.

"Well, as your one and only daughter, I think I should know where my mother is heading off to and leaving me", I confidently reply and walk round to the one side of the desk, her gaze following me. I lean over and open the laptop lid back up.

"Hmm. Paris, eh? Leaving your daughter behind and jetting off to the city of love... Without your husband!" I shout.

"Quieten down Kel, I don't want your father to hear", she whispers. "Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but with all the things going on, I didn't want to add another thing to your plate."

"You didn't want to add another thing to my plate? My mother decides to go off on a jolly and just decides to not tell me. What if I didn't know? When were you going to tell me? Were you just going to leave me a message 'Gone to Paris. Be back soon'?"

"No, of course I was going to tell you Kelly. Just when things had calmed down", she answered.

"So why are you going?" I enquire. This was such a kick in the teeth. My world's falling apart and the one person I need there to rely on decides to run off to Paris. Though the way my week is going, this is just following the pattern.

"I need some space. Your father and I are just drifting apart and I just can't take it. I need this vacation Kel", she says. Tears form in her eyes and I know I pushed her too far.

"Okay. Let's just have a breather. I know, how about we go for a walk? I mean it's a lovely day and we can take Scruff out if you want", I cheerfully exclaim.

"A walk. Yeah, let's go out for a walk. I need a breather", she wheezes. I wander out and grab the red lead hanging on the banister. Scruff runs into the hall and sits down by my feet. He knows what time it is. Hooking it onto his patterned collar, I head out the door. Mum swiftly follows. Outside our house is a very busy road. You literally take your life into your hands crossing it. I'm surprised the council haven't done anything about it; I mean three people have been knocked down.

Looking left and right, the cars whoosh past. Right, I am going to die now, but I have made my peace with that. Closing my eyes I run across the road, but then abruptly stop when I trip over a brick wall on the other side of the street. Yes! I made it. I'm alive! Wait, there's something else. I then notice I'm holding a lead. Oh, the dog. He wags his tail and sits down obediently. Hey, the obedience classes paid off. I look back across the street to see my Mum hurrying to and fro the pavement, waiting for a moment to cross. Why she so worried? This woman's walked across this street backwards, why she taking so long? She takes a deep breath and walks calmly across. Then, her straight face creases into a smile. Obviously she's relieved too. She pauses for a minute and sighs with relief. I smile at her and she beams back. A Jeep comes trundling down the road, but suddenly spirals out of control and brakes rapidly, hitting the cars next to me and turning them over. I feel a weight on my legs and my vision darkens...
