Chapter Seven

Wow, my whole life hasn't been as exciting as this week. I mean most of the time I was in work or texting my boyfriend or both. And now I've been fired from that same job and the boyfriend I was texting has not even crossed my mind in, um, four minutes. Oh my Lord this is horrendous. I'm a single woman. My ex-boyfriend should be the last thing on my mind, but I can't stop thinking about him. But, I don't think it's out of love, no, I hate him. It's out of fear. He's pretty much become that second shadow that you have. And if he's anything like Doctor Who's second shadow, God help me.

I wander off the plane, slightly glumly. I was hoping to be in Paris by now, perhaps eating a croissant in a posh café. But, let's enjoy our time here, I mean it'll be an adventure.

A line of blue and grey taxis are lined up outside. Surely one of these knows where Glyntafon is. I knock on the window of the first one and he calls out in the strongest Welsh accent I have ever heard (I have only ever met one Welsh person in my life, so that isn't much of a comparison), "Sorry love, already waiting for someone". I talk to all the taxi drivers and they are all waiting for someone, so I give up. Sitting on the steps of the airport, I feel like tearing up. But then hand presses on my shoulder and I look up, half expecting it to be rain making my day even worse. It's Duke. "Hey, come with me in my taxi, you don't deserve to be sitting in the cold". He beckons me over to a black taxi with a broken windscreen wiper. I rush over and jump in, closely followed by Duke. The grey leather seats are torn in places and the roof has something questionable on it, but that's okay. It's a ride.

"Hi, I've got a plus one. She needs to go to..." he starts.

"Oh, um, Glyntafon", I say hopeful that the driver knows where it is. The driver looks back at me with a confused look on his face.

"Never heard of it, darling", he says and my expression drops. "Wait, wait, I think I might have heard of it. It's the village next to Carmarthenshire, right?"

"I guess so", I reply and he drives off. He speeds up as he heads down a hill and then brakes sharply as he heads up another.

"Lots of hills, isn't there?" I ask.

"Oh, yeah, a couple", he answers. I think he's being sarcastic. Duke smiles at me and nods to the driver. What the heck does that mean? Maybe it's like a handshake thing or something. Oh, wait he's getting out. That's what it meant. He waves and walks away. This is going to sound really dramatic, but I'm actually missing him. All the people I've ever been friends with have been great and all, but they never were there when I needed them, but I've known Duke for six hours and he's been so helpful. I just wish everyone was like him. But the past is in the past. Time to move on.

Goodness, this driver drives fast. Who does he think he is? Vin Diesel? He swerves past all the cars and I start to regret getting in this cab. I am literally taking my life in my hands here. I curl up in the backseat and cover my eyes. This is terrifying. I've been to horror movies less scary than this.

He speeds down the motorway and I catch a glimpse of the "Welcome to Carmarthenshire" sign. Nearly there. My thoughts of a straight road are short-lived as the driver turns onto a bumpy lane. I jump around in the back and I'm flung against the window. This trip is more violent than I thought. The cab then stops and I end up in the front seat.

"Um, why'd we stop?" I ask with my legs in the air. He doesn't answer just points through the windscreen. I get up and see what he was pointing at: a farm gate.

"Sorry, love, can't go any further", he replies cheerfully.

"Oh, don't worry, how much do I owe you?" I enquire.

"Nothing. Duke said to put it on his account", he answers. I get out and look towards the huge field. This is going to ruin my boots...
