Chapter 15 : Are We Besties or What?
Kylan's POV
You know that feeling when every small noise sounds like things are being hammered into your ears, and you'd much rather prefer to wear sunglasses even inside but you don't wanna look like a weirdo. And like, your whole body aches, and you feel like throwing up, there's nausea. Yeah, I'm not talking about pregnancy. I don't think that's possible for me. Or at least until Science improves more. But what I'm facing right now is common, yet deadly - it is a hangover.
Now I think being hungover is valid reason for absence in school. But first of all, society deems it inappropriate for people in school to drink, which I think is so unfair; why should adults have all the fun? Secondly, you see, there are these people living in my house, who always create problems for me. I don't know if you guys live with them or not... they're these peculiar creatures called parents. It's hard to understand them, and they do make life more difficult sometimes, but overall they're good people. My family is one of a kind. And I'm not saying that to be all like "not like other girls", or "not like other families" in this case. I'll let you be the judge of it. So let me tell you the story of last night.
~ A flashback to the night before ~
By the time we got a little sobered up, Jason suggested we should go home. We kept the cycles where they were supposed to be as I walked towards my car. I shuffled around to find my keys but after a solid few minutes of rummaging, I looked at Jason and uttered the words, "I think I lost my keys."
"Then let's just take a cab." He shrugged while he started looking for a cab on his phone.
"Wait, wait, wait... Hold on. What about my car? We need to find the keys, Jay." I said looking puzzled. How is he so calm? I am near about losing it!
"You're drunk, you anyway shouldn't drive right now. Let's just take a cab. We can go home and search for your keys. And if we don't find it, we can come back tomorrow and search for it here." He explained.
"But what if my car gets stolen?" I asked.
"That car?" He said looking towards my car. "Really?"
"Hey! It's a really nice car, you know." I said in a defensive tone. But I do agree with him though. The chances of my beaten down car getting stolen are highly unlikely. Jason kept looking at me for my approval, until I gave in. "Fine. Just get a cab." I said feeling defeated.
After staring at his phone for a while, Jason looked at me and said, "There are almost no cabs that wanna go where I live. People keep cancelling. What should I do?"
"I don't know..." I replied though I had a feeling he wasn't really asking me, he had a solution.
"Can I stay over with you tonight?" He asked looking almost apologetic. "Your place is close, and we can even walk there if no cabs wanna go there."
"Okay, I guess." I shrugged as he went back to looking for a cab with my location. I somehow found my keys on the cab ride home and I was overjoyed. Jason insisted on paying for the cab because he said that's the least he could do, since I'm letting him stay over; his words, not mine.
"We gotta be real quiet, okay? I cannot let my parents wake up." I said in a low voice, as we tip-toed inside. I inserted the key to open the door but the knob turned on it own, as the door flung open. And there stood in all her glory, my dear mother.
"Hi, Mom." I said with an awkward smile. She seemed... angry. Oops! "Young man! Where have you been?" She seethed with anger.
"Oh, I've recently become his friend." Jason said with a smile taking her hand for a shake. Mistaking her question directed towards her. "Even I don't know where I've been all these years, not being friends with this guy." He gestured towards me with a smile. Ugh! Read the room, dude! Is he trying to lighten the mood, or can he seriously not understand Mom is mad? Is he still drunk? Oh God!
"And who are you?" She asked. "Boyfriend?"
"NO! Mom." I screamed.
"Whoa dude. Defensive much?" Jay looked at me. I was trying to signal the seriousness of the situation to him with my eyes, when Mom spoke.
"Yeah. Why are you being so defensive, Kylan? You got something to hide?" She asked with her hands on her hips. This guy is gonna be the death of me!
"Mom, can we at least come inside?" I asked, as she moved away from the door frame to let us in.
"A few weeks back when we were out, you threw a party at home. And now this! Getting drunk on a school night is not responsible, you know." We sat with our heads hung low... or at least mine, while she chastised us.
"But now's the time, you know, for fun. When else would we stay out late and have fun? When we're your age? With full time jobs and people other than us to take care of? Now that's even more irresponsible." Jason spoke while I looked at him incredulously. You've got to be kidding me!
"Dude, enough. This isn't funny." I whispered to him, slowly getting mad at him now.
"No, let him speak." My Mom stopped me and sat down in front of us. "Well, I'd say don't drink then." She spoke directing towards Jason.
"So you're telling us to never have fun?" Jason asked with half-smile, half-smirk on his face which I find hot, but I'm too tense to fixate on it right now.
"Is drinking the only form of fun that you can have?" She threw him a challenging look.
"What if it is?" Jason spoke again. This dumbass is gonna get us killed. I don't know how it is with his parents, but you DO NOT talk back to my Mom. "Tell me, you never went out partying at our age?"
"Yeah I did." Mom spoke after a while, seemingly finding no other answer. "But I was better than you morons at hiding it." Whoa, what? No scolding? Just like that? To all that? I feel like the unfavoured child here; I mean Jason can get away with that, but I would never survive talking back to my Mom. "Now go into your rooms. I do not know how you'll manage school tomorrow, but I've got work so I'm gonna go sleep now." She sounded defeated.
Jason chuckled a little at that. "For what it's worth, I am really sorry for this being how we meet for the first time."
"You're not sorry one bit!" Mom gave him a knowing look.
"But I am though." He laughed a little when Mom didn't stop giving him the look. "I'm not sorry I went out drinking with Kylan, I loved our time together, and I absolutely love him. So no, I'm not sorry about that, you're right. But I am sorry I made such a bad first impression. I regret it."
Wait... he loves me? "You love him?" Mom asked incredulously. "When did it get that serious, I thought you just started dating. This is worse." Then she smacked my head and gave me an angry look. "You never tell me what's going on with you."
"Ow, what?" I looked utterly confused. "What love? There's no love." I said, and regretted it the moment the words left my mouth.
Jason looked at me with the saddest eyes, his shoulders sagged, with a slight pout. "You don't love me?"
"I mean, I do-" I tried to explain but he got up and left to go upstairs. Oops-
"Shit! Looks like someone's in trouble." Mom shrugged her shoulders.
"Mom. We aren't together!" All of this confusion is because of her.
"Oh come on, Kylan. I've raised you better than this; don't lead the boy on, if you don't love him back. He just said he's in love with you. He seems crazy for you, but look at you! Ugh! I have failed to raise you after all." She left with that. And I sat there in confusion. What the hell is happening? Am I in a relationship I am not even aware of?
And just then Jason walks down the stairs again, looking all pouty, with his hands by his side in a fist. You can't imagine how adorable he looks right now! "Can't find your room." He said with his voice so low, I almost didn't hear it.
I chuckled a little and walked towards him as I swung my arm around his shoulder as I guided him to my room. He sat down on my bed as I tidied up my room a little. This is not how I let guests see my room.
"Kylan, are we not best friends?" Jason said looking down.
"Jay... we're friends, close ones, but I'm not sure if we're best friends... yet." I replied slowly crouching down in front of him.
"But like- we hang out together all the time, we sit together at lunch, you help me impress my crush, we even went out drinking together just the two of us. That sounds like best friends to me." He pouted with those puppy eyes directed at me.
I don't know what those eyes do to you, but trust me, if you stare at them for more than a second, you're gonna want to give him the whole freakin' world if that's what he asks for; no questions asked. I cupped his face with my hands "Aw, Jay-" I started but he interrupted me.
"I even went out drinking with you. I never drink with anyone!" He said it with this voice that I comepletely...
"You're right, we're best friends." I said. And that is the moment, ladies and gentlemen, when I gave into the wiles of Jason Zeigler. It was like, I was a pockemon he collected. And just then he flashes me this smile, and I know, I'd say yes to anything if it makes him smile like that. Wow! So this is how it feels to be best friends, huh?
