Chapter 4: Aribaba (アリババ)
Kanari didn't want to do that, she froze up at the thought. 'Who is trustworthy' she thought. All she could recall was that she was in a pickle, and the only way to figure out the mysteries surrounding the past few weeks was to contact those who made Kanari the way she was now, shy, a shut heart, and a timid nature woven deep into every fiber of her being.
She sighed, and splashed some cold water onto her face. She wouldn't think of that now, and she wouldn't until later.
Kanari left the bathroom, shutting off the lights in the process, promising herself that she would work hard to figure out the answers.
She walked into her bedroom, and retired for the night.
What had welcomed her in her sleep though was rather... Unusual.
Kanari was in the middle of what appeared to be a subway, except it was too distorted for Kanari to make out what it actually was. She walked around a bit, examining what the place was. It was eerily quiet, and it unnerved Kanari, and she wanted to leave.
"Wake up," she slapped her cheeks, shutting her eyes, "This isn't real."
She opened her eyes, only to find that the subway hadn't disappeared. She began to panic. "This isn't real," she repeated, "This is not real, this is not real, this is NOT REAL." she frantically repeated, resting her hands over her ears, crouching down, as an ominous clangning echoed.
Her hands didn't help at all. In fact, they only seemed to be magnifying the sounds, and that terrified her. She began to hyperventilate, and suddenly...
They stopped.
Kanari released her hands, her breathing began to slow, and she began to raise upright. She let out a sigh of relief, and she began to look around.
A few minutes later, there was a crashing sound, which caused Kanari to turn around, only to see nothing out of the sort.
"Who's there?" she asked to nobody in particular, before heading on over to where the sound originated as slowly as possible.
When she had approached the area in which she thought she had heard the sound, there was another crash from behind her, and she turned around frantically.
Kanari's eyes immediately widened, as she saw... Something. It was a creature with dark skin that seemed to ripple. It was wider near the head, and only seemed to become more narrow as it went closer to the legs. It had many faces, provided by masks.
It stumbled around over the subway entrance, and the world seemed to fluctuate along with it. Kanari's heart rate quickened in fear, she felt her legs begin to shake as she tried to move her legs, unable to do so, as her legs felt like they were glued to the floor.
The creature then turned itself to look at Kanari with all of it's eyes. It began to stumble over to her, and when it came within a few inches of Kanari, it leaned in close, and Kanari could tell that each mask had possessed no eyes, and that they were just empty voids.
It reached a hand out to her, and Kanari brought a arm to protect her face, and the creature hesitated for a moment, and it gingerly brought its hand to her right eye, and she could tell that her patch was still there.
She felt it's fingers enclose around the fabric, and it pulled against it, and Kanari felt the patch become removed, and Kanari felt the humid air hit against her right eye's skin.
"W... What are you?" she asked the creature, and it tilted it's head a bit.
Kanari felt stupid, expecting it to answer her with actual words. The creature rose up, and stumbled towards the subway entrance. It stopped to only turn around and stare at Kanari.
"You want me to follow?" she inquired of it, to which it only turned back to the entrance, but it didn't move.
Kanari then understood what it had wanted of her. She picked itself off of the ground, and she began to catch up to the creature, whom of which appeared to be indifferent when Kanari had caught up with it. "Is it safe?" she asked, and the creature turned towards her, and only walked inside the entrance.
Kanari looked onwards to the ominious entrance, and she stepped into the darkness.
And after she had entered, she was greeted with the sun's rays as she woke up.
She opened her eyes, almost confused as to what her dream had meant. She rubbed her temples before raising upright. "What the hell was that dream?" she questioned.
She heard her phone vibrate, and she reached for the small device, and she looked at her notifications. She had received a text from an unknown number, it read 'I will be waiting for your call'. She looked at the text several times over before she began to reply back, 'Who is this?'
There was no answer from the other person, so Kanari tucked her phone into her schoolbag, and she stood up from her bed, only to be greeted with a mind-splitting headache. "Not now." she replied to nobody, and she quickly got dressed, and she went downstairs to make her breakfast.
Her uncle was seated on the reclining chair, his eyes shut, soft snores escaping from him as he slept. Kanari walked over to the kitchen and made her normal meal of toast with jelly, and she ate in peace.
After she finished eating, she fished her phone out of her schoolbag, and she reopened the mysterious text message, and she stared at the number. Who was it?
Her phone vibrated again, and a new message appeared, this time it read 'Someone who can help you.'
She stared at the message in awe, and she went and she clicked the number, and the menu popped up, and she didn't hesitate to click the 'call' option.
She walked out of the house as the phone's dial tone rung, her schoolbag draped over her shoulder.
"I've been waiting for your call." a voice answered, a very distorted one.
"Who are you, and how do you have this number?" Kanari immediately replied.
"Now now, that is no excuse for you to act that way, especially when I'm contacting you to help you."
"How can I know I can trust you?"
"Let's just say that I've always been on your side of your... Incident."
Kanari paused for a moment before answering "How should I know that you're really on my side?"
"Where are my manners, my name's Alibaba, and I am also a victim to their ploys."
"Alibaba? What kind of name is that?"
"An online name. Now, do you want help or not?"
"Of course I do, I just don't know whether or not I should trust you."
"You don't have to, I need the help."
Kanari thought for a moment. "Fine," she started, "What should I do?"
"First, we'll have to meet in person," Alibaba replied, "And then we can get to business."
Translation Notes: Aribaba translates to Alibaba, which I think is written as アリババ
