Chapter Three - Well meant intentions
The next afternoon Ross and I made the walk to Trenwith. When we arrived, Ross stepped forward and knocked on the door. Elizabeth answered.
"I'm glad you came. Come in." Ross gestured for me to go first which I did and he followed but walked ahead of me as we saw Aunt Agatha sat snoozing in the corner but no sound or sight of Francis.
"Is Francis here?" Ross wondered
"He somewhere about. I wanted to speak with you first." Elizabeth answered "To ask if some help might be given when you come to court. I hope you will take the gesture with the kindness in which it is intended." my head tilted in confusion
"Gesture?" Ross questioned and we heard footsteps behind us. I turned my head and saw none other than George Warleggan step out.
"George might know the judge who will hear your case." Elizabeth informed us, as my shoulders sagged in disappointment. This would not end well and peace between families would be much harder to achieve. Ross looked back at me and I shook my head denying any knowledge of what this was.
"How convenient." he retorted
"And thought that perhaps he could be..." Elizabeth trailed off. I held Ross's arm, the sense of his anger towards the man rolled of him in waves
"Pointed in the right direction." George finished
"For a price no doubt." Ross retorted restraining himself to do anything reckless that would make things worse.
"Not one that you would personally have to pay." George tried to assure us
"But I see that I would. And it strikes me more than my liberty's worth." Behind us a door open and closes "Abigail, we're leaving." I nodded in understanding and turned to leave with him when Francis arrived.
"Ross." Francis smiled happy to see his cousin then noticed George behind us "Elizabeth, what is the meaning of this?" he wondered
"I thought if there was something we could do to help Ross..." Elizabeth explained
"We?" he questioned
"A well intentioned notion, I'm sure." I spoke "Come, my love." I guided him out before he could say anything to make even more of an offence and be taken the wrong way. He managed to keep his opinions to himself till I closed the front door of our home.
"Do they seriously I would stoop to beg favours for that upstart poodle." he vented
"To be fair, Francis seemed as surprised as we were at Elizabeth bid to help." I countered
"If I wished to prostitutemyself I'd sooner grovel to Ray Penvenen who's actually aquatinted with judge Lister. He removed his neck tie and threw it onto his study desk in frustration
"Is he now." I hummed
"It really is the end for me and Francis." He huffed and changed his jacket
"Ross, Francis was as clueless as you and me. Where are you going?" i rested my hands on my hips.
"To the mine. Where it's still possible to do a honest day's work." he slammed the door behind him. Demelza came in with Henry and I crouched down to him.
"Your Papa with be the death of me one day little one." I lifted him up and kissed his cheek.
"Master Henry and I were about to go down to the fields to pick some fruit and veg." Demelza chimed
"That sounds fun. Maybe next time, I will join you. But right now I have to explore another avenue of saving Ross' head." I co with a small smile tapping his nose and making him laugh.
"The meeting at Trenwith did not go well?" she asked
"My sister means well, but sometimes she does not think her we well intention notations through properly." I let Henry back down "I shouldn't be long. Have fun." I take my leave and walk to see Ray Penvenen to gauge the man who could be helpful to my husband's cause. I knocked and the door and the butler answered
"Mistress Poldark to see Mister Pnevenan." he nodded and let me in. I sat and waited till he came out.
"Mrs Poldark." I stood and curtsied "I don't believe I've had the pleasure."
"I am sorry to trouble you. I was taken queasy as I was out walking and yours was the first house I came upon." I lied with a small smile
"Ah"
