Chapter Thirty Two - Whatever
-3rd Person-
Demelza was sawing some fallen branches that she and the others collected when Mark and friend came into the yard. She caught sight of them.
"Garrick! Go to! See them off!" Garrick following the behest of one of his mistress' ran over and stated barking at them intimidatingly.
"Aye, mistress. We come at the behest of Mr Trencrom." Mark defended
"I know why 'ee come and who sent 'ee. I'll not have 'ee upset my Mistress. Be away with 'ee" she scowled at the two men. Abigail hearing the ruckus came to see what was amiss and did't like what she saw. She grumbled under her breath for a moment.
"Garrick! Garrick! Here!" she called and the dog came running over before turning on her heel and heading inside. Leaving the three of them to cautiously follow.
"The children wake up in 10 minutes I want you done and out quietly in that time, or so help me I'll crown you." She scowled standing at the door to the library. The two men tipped their hats and got to work opening up the secret cache.
"Mr Trencrom do send his regrets." Mark stated
"Mr Trencrom can keep them and take his goods. It was never the agreement to leave them there for three weeks before you come calling." Abigail scolded in discontentment at the two. "It's taking advantage. I don't like that and neither does Ross." she stormed out. Abigail took the children and left while Demelza stayed and kept with over them as they loaded the goods and fixed the library back up.
"We shan't bother the mistress again." Mark and Ted bowed their head
"Till the next drop. Be sure to make no commotion as you leave. The last thing Mistress wants is you bringing the gaugers upon us." Just then there was a crash and Garrick started barking.
"Oh, my ivers! Tis they, the gaugers." Mark stressed
"Go! Go!" Demelza shoved them out and gave the room a quick look over before closing the door. Demelza entered the kitchen to see a fight in progress between Prudie and Jud.
"I'll give you such a lib sin!" Prudie yelled
"Hush your clack, woman!" Jud grunted trying to fight of the broom nearing to crown his head "I didn't come home to argeefy!" Demelza came forth and broke up the fight.
"Leave him be. ." she struggled between the two but fell into the fight as well as Ross returned.
"The noble art of cornish wrestling." Ross commented "Where, pray tell is my wife?" he wondered first. Demelza grunted shoving Jud of her and Prudie.
"Gone to town sir, with the children and wagon. Bad mood, sir. To be sure." she brushed herself off answering.
"Lovely." he sighed then turned his attention to Jud "You have a message for me?"
"Yes, sir." Ross retrieved the rum and sat down as Prudie and Demelza continued with supper. Ross poured out two servings.
"Mark Daniel's been found." Jud told him. Demelza looked back at the two
"Where?"
"Cherbourg, he was. The with all this kick and sprawl, folk did look at him and askance, so he slips off to the Scillies." Jus relays the information
"Can a message be got to him?"
"'Tis don already. Mr Trencrom's ship, The one and All sets sail for France tomorrow on a run. Look in to St Mary's on his way to France. Mark will meet 'ee there. He'll return the same way." Just then Abigail and the children returned home. Demelza gave a apprehensive look to the two men before running out to meet her friend and Mistress. Ross sighed, knowing that Demelza would warn his wife of what she was walking into and she did.
"Mistress Abigail." she breathed as Abigail helped Henry and Rebekah down. "I have to warn 'ee Mistress."
"Of what? Demelza what happened?" Abigail scowled touching her friends shoulder.
"It be Jud. He's back and he's telling the Mister that he can see Mark Daniel but only if he goes on the next run to France." Abigail was confused.
"Okay, it's okay. fetch Prudie and bring the the haul in." Demelza nodded. They all headed in and Rebekah ran up to her Papa while Henry chose to stay by Abigail's side.
"What's this I here about France and Mark Daniel?" she inquired removing her gloves.
"Mark's been found, he was hiding out but has agreed to meet me." Ross explained "It also means that I would have to travel to France." Abigail raised an eyebrow
"You? Go on a smuggle run?"
"There's no other way. I must meet him." Ross insisted
"I'll tell Mr Trencrom." Jus says as Prudie and Demelza came back in with the packages.
"Aye and when that's done drag his sneaky carcass back here." Prudie grumbled making Abigail have an amused look for a second before turning back to a serious one.
"It's too risky." Abigail denied
"Nay but..." Abigail cut Prudie off
"No, nay about it. There is an informer in our midst." she scowled
"The last few runs we've had no trouble, so Trencrom do reckon he's gone elsewhere. Anyways ain't I. Pick me liver, do 'ee think I be such a man." Jus informs her making the woman scoff.
"No such thing it's called laying low. It clear your not the informer, you haven't got the brains for such a task." Abigail took Henry's hand "Let's go Rebekah Grace." Ross let Rebekah down and she toddled over to her Mother. The three of them left the room.
