Chapter Four - A moment of happiness

Mr Penvenan was kind enough to give me some refreshment and conversation for a short time. He seemed a wholesome and kind man, on first meeting but I held some reservation. The two of us walked out together when he stopped me.

"I hope that you are not to downcast about your husband's coming trial." he stated

"In all honesty, I fear the worst. If one only knew who the judge would be." I countered

"Oh, that's no secret, ma'am. Tis Justice Wentworth Lister." he answered

"Oh, are you aquatinted  with him?" I fake wonder

"Oh, we know each other. He'll be supporting Unwin Trevenaunce at the election tomorrow night. A stern fellow, though generally accounted fair." I hummed before respond

"It does puzzle me how a judge can be expected to listen to a case and get to the root of it, all in a few hours. Does he ever ask for the truth in private before the trial begins." I offer lightly making him chuckle

"Perhaps he should."

"I know as the wife, I will side with my husband, come what may. I just wished that Ross were treated the way they would want to be, heaven forbid. But that is the opinion of a wife." I went to go. "So will you be at Bodmin for the assizes?" wondered

"For the election, yes." Just then a carriage rolled into the estate

"Well, I hope that we will meet again. Thank you for the refreshment." I left after the carriage arrived. Glancing back to give a small smile and returning home.

I practiced on the harpsichord and the notes and music calmed my nerves. Ross left for Bodmin tomorrow and I was afeared of what would happen.

"Who is this fine, lady? And what has she done with my wife?" I heard Ross and turned around

"Be off with you." I scoffed

"Ah, there she is. For a moment there I thought I'd lost her." he made his wave over to me

"Because she pinked up to the works with drop girls and powdered?" I joked gazing up at him.

"Clearly I don't need to worry about you, when I'm gone. You'll have a line of suitors from here to Penzance." He commented making me roll my eyes in amusement as he took my hand in his.

"Don't be so dramatic. Like anyone else could handle me." he smiled mournfully. I stood and wrapped my arms around him.

"I love you." I told him

"As I love you." he kissed me softly.

---------

When I awoke the next morning I was alone. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and claimed out of bed and dressed myself. Henry was happily playing with Demelza when I greeted him. That's when I noticed Ross out of the window, chopping wood.

"I'll be back." I kissed Henry's head once more and made my way outside. Watching for a moment I took him in on the weight of today.

"How rude! You leave me in bed like the Queen of Sheba while you attend to all the chores." I jested trying to make light of the day in someway. My nerves were all over the place with what was to come. I made my way over to him.

"Is it not my duty to cherish my wife while I'm here? And to provide firewood for when i am not?" he rolled up his sleeves as he met me halfway. I rested my hand on his cheek as he leaned into my touch. I cherished these moments before the storm, not matter what came they would feel me with happiness.

"I want stay like this forever." I mumbled stroking his cheek.

"I wish so too, I'm only glad for your sake you're not seeing me in court." he replied holding my hand in place put lifting his face upward

"No, Ross."

"You will stay here?" he asked of me. It hurt my soul that he would ask that of me. I had wanted and still do want to be there for him.

"Yes, if you wish that of me." I answer then pulled him into my arms and comfort.

---------

Henry was petting Ross' horse as he was readying to leave for Bodmin.  Ross joined us and I shook my head and stood away.

"Promise me, you'll return to us." I pointed. He looked at me guiltily but nodded, I knew he couldn't but I knew he would try to. He kissed both of us before mounting and leaving. Henry gave a small wave and I held back my tears kissing his head. I headed inside.

"Now my sweet, Mama will be gone for a little while. Demelza will take care of you." I told him

"He will be well cared for, I promise." Demelza assured me. "Won't Master Ross be upset when he learns you followed him.

"If he sees me, he will. But he would do the same for me, so he really has no choice, besides I never actually said I promise." I shrugged setting Henry down. I packed a few things and slipped on my had and coat. "Love, to you both." I gave them a quick wave and went to the stops for the coach from that would take me to Bodmin. I had called for back up in one of my most trusted allies.

Verity.

She would already be on the coach and I would be joining her. Speaking of the coach arrived and came to a stop. I opened the door and got in.

"Verity." I chimed seeing her. She took my bag.

"I've saved you a place my dear." she replied as I saw that there was a seat available

"Thank you." I took my seat and closed the door. Then I take the time to properly hug her as we were on our way. She was a lovely sight for sore eyes.

"You did tell Ross you were coming?" she asked

"Of course not. If he wasn't where he was, he would have a fit seeing me." I smiled and sat back. Over the course of the journey the two of us caught up and she apologised for not being able to come when I was sick and apologised over our loss. She did ask about Francis but i regretted telling her of what happened after she had left. When we arrived, I had told her of my freethinking. I had Demelza come up a few days ago to book a room at the Crown inn. We were let inside.

"Thank you."

"Oh this town's a-boiling. I forgot it was election week" she competed glancing out of the window as I put down my things.

"Yes. I met one one of the candidates briefly. He is a friend of our neighbour Penvenan. I am regret to tell you that I must run an errand later."

"With the streets full of drunkards?" she questioned incredulously

"It's for Ross and something I must do" she nodded in agreement

Demelza took Henry out for some fresh air and  to distract him for the fact that his parents were away. She chased him around making him giggle in delight.

"Demelza!" The red head turned hearing her name and saw Elizabeth

"Mistress Elizabeth." she curtsied then took a hold of Henry's hand. Elizabeth smiled softly at her nephew as she to held onto Geoffrey Charles' hand.

"I was going to pay a visit upon my sister, this afternoon." Elizabeth declared

"She is away on business and won't be back for a couple of days." Demelza informed her Elizabeth looked downcast when she heard the news. Demelza didn't have to say what the business was. She knew her sister would be in Bodmin with Ross.

"I see, how about we let these two cousins play with one another again? Henry." she handed Henry the toy stick sword and he waved it about. "Go on Geoffrey Charles." she encouraged her son and the two boys ran off to play.

Meanwhile in Bodmin. Ross had been locked up for the night and Abigail was preparing to leave and speak with Judge Listen on Ross' behalf.

"Are you sure Ross meant you to go out alone?" Verity questioned her cousin "You are a lady after all."

"I spent some informative years dealing with drunken men. They no longer scare me, I assure you." Abigail fixed her  cloak on and gave Verity a hug before she left. Outside there was none other that Mr Carne preaching. Abigail caught him before he did her and lifted up her hood to avoid his detection.

-Abgail-

I made my way to the entrance the where I could find the person I was looking for.

"Excuse me, Sirs." I smiled politely as two Officers.

"Entry to the assembly rooms is for voters only." the told me and I scowled

"I've come to see Mr Penvenan. He specifically asked for me." I insisted  to them but the stood closer together.

"I bet he did. You can't come through." they denied

"I plead with you. Is the only reason I've come to Bodmin. My husband's life depends upon it." I plead with them

"Move along, now." I didn't "I said move along." i was forcefully shoved away and then I caught sight on my denied entry. George Warleggan. I headed back to the inn to regroup and think of another plan. I entered our room and sat down.

"Oh, you look downcast my dear. What went wrong?" she wondered

"It matters not." I mumble staring out of the window that was until I made my mind up to just do what i needed to do.

"Where are you going now?"

"My last attempt at saving my husband." I left once more and left
