Chapter 9: First Day of School

A Few Days Later

Beacon Academy

Port: Ah. This maneuver reminds me of the time I single-handedly defeated a Nevermore during my first years as a Huntsman!

After the long weekend, Beacon Academy's classes were back in session.

In this particular class, Professor Port was—once again—going on another trip down memory lane, where he'd reminisce about his early deeds as a young Huntsman. Usually when this happens, the students would either start working on other things or simply fall asleep.

Among this students in this class was team RWBY. Ruby was doodling in her notebook, Weiss was struggling to keep herself awake, Blake was working on homework for a different class, and Yang was just flat out sleeping at her desk.

Port: The Nevermore had me cornered! Behind me were my wounded teammates, and my weapon was practically destroyed already. So thinking quickly-

Professor Port's story was cut off when the doors to his classroom opened up.

Port: Hm?

Walking through the doorway was Ozpin.

Port: Professor Ozpin! What a surprise!

Port's loud introduction woke the class from their sleepiness. Including Yang, who had to wipe drool from her mouth.

Yang: Huh? Wha?

Ozpin: Good morning Professor Port, and class.

Port: To what do we owe this visit?

Ozpin: I have a new student.

Port: A new student you say? Well, show them in! I'm always more than willing to accept another student into my class!

Ozpin: Thank you.

Ozpin glanced behind him and motioned for his guest to come forward.

Stepping through the doorway was a young teen wearing the Academy's uniform.

(Y/N): ;_;

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang were each surprised at who stepped through.

Port: Come over to the front of the class my boy! Introduce yourself to the class.

(Y/N): Do I have to?

Ozpin: Yes you do.

Y/N shrugged and made his way to the front of the class.

(Y/N): Hello, my name is-

Y/N momentarily stopped when he recognized the four girls that were also attending the class.

(Y/N): Uh... My name is (F/N) (L/N), pleased to meet all of you...

Some of the class waved, others simply said "Hi".

Y/N leaned toward Professor Port.

(Y/N): (whisper) You think I could sit somewhere over there?

Y/N pointed to the side of the class room that Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, were not.

Port: Nonsense! You can sit next to Ms. Rose! She has an open seat next to her!

(Y/N): Okay...

Y/N slowly shuffled his way to the empty seat next to Ruby and sat down.

Port: Let us continue our lesson!

Y/N looked behind him to see Ozpin give him a smile.

Ozpin: Good Luck!

(Y/N): Q_Q

Y/N shrugged as Ozpin left the class.

Port: Now where was I?... Ah yes! The Nevermore had us cornered!-....

Y/N listened to Professor Port's short story and looked at Ruby.

(Y/N): (whisper) Is this going to be on a test?

All four of them were giving Y/N a look of suspicion.

(Y/N): (whisper) So.... that's a no?...

Weiss: (whisper) Who are you!?

(Y/N): (whisper) Uh...

Yang: (whisper) And don't try to lie to us!

Ruby: (whisper) You were at Trist and now you're here!

(Y/N): (whisper) Okay! Okay! Can we at least wait till after class?

The four girls narrowed their eyes.

Ruby: (whisper) Fine. But you'd better answer our questions!

(Y/N): *whimper*

One Professor Port Story Later...

After going on another story spree, Professor Port used up all the time of the class and eventually had to let the students go.

Port: Be sure to complete your readings! And remember, always be vigilant!

As the students began to file out of the class room, Y/N tried to sneak away by joining the crowd of students.

(Y/N): Carefully... Carefully... Like a snake... a slippery sna- Ow!

As Y/N was trying to sneak away, he ran right into Yang who was standing, like a rock, in his way.

(Y/N): Uh... have mercy?

Yang pulled Y/N to the side and he ended up in a side hallway with team RWBY.

Weiss: Okay, time to answer some questions.

Yang cracked her knuckles.

Yang: And don't you dare try to run, again.

(Y/N): Uh... *sweats*

Ruby: You owe us an explanation at least.

(Y/N): Okay! *sigh* What do you want to know?

Ruby: Firstly, who are you? You were at Trist and at that Dust store!

Blake: More to the point, you're that traveler we heard about, aren't you?

(Y/N): Yes. Yes, I am...

The girls looked at Y/N expectantly.

(Y/N): ...What?

Weiss: What do you mean, "What"? You said you'd tell us everything!

(Y/N): What else is there?! Look, I'll tell you what I told everyone else! I was walking down the path at night-

Blake: You were traveling at night?

(Y/N): It was hot during the day! So anyway, as I was walking I heard a loud explosion. It scared me so I just kept walking. Eventually, I heard a whole bunch of-... Grimm! -Grimm approaching, so I hid.

Yang: You hid from a bunch of Grimm?

(Y/N): Yeah, was that the wrong thing to do?

Yang: No, it's just that, I've never heard of Grimm just ignoring someone. And, you're not exactly the most stealthy person I've ever met...

(Y/N): I was trying to be sneaky...

Ruby: They did ignore the town, didn't they?

Yang: Yeah, they did...

Weiss: That doesn't explain why you're here!! Or why you're a student at Beacon Academy!

Yang: Yeah! Did you even have to go through "Initiation"?

Y/N's eye twitched.

Emerald Forest

Ozpin and Glynda led Y/N to a cliff overlooking a vast forest. Near the edge of the cliff were a series of metal square platforms.

Glynda: Please step on the platform.

(Y/N): Okay...

Y/N walked over to the metal square and stood on it.

(Y/N): So... Do I have to answer a bunch of questi- AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Mid-question, the platform instantly launched Y/N toward the forest. Ozpin and Glynda watched with interest as Y/N was sent flying toward the forest.

Glynda: I still cannot believe you'd enroll such a person into Beacon.

Ozpin: Would you rather him be just wandering around Vale?

Glynda sighed.

Glynda: Still...

Ozpin: At least this way, we'll be able to keep an eye on him and keep him within arm's reach.

A faint crashing sound echoed through the forest.

(Y/N): (In the distance) My arms!!

Ozpin: We'll also be able to learn more about who this young man may be.

Glynda: How do we know he isn't dangerous?

(Y/N): (in the distance) I... I think I can stand up! *crack* Ow!! Oh god! No! No I can't!!

Ozpin: We don't.

Glynda: Then, why?

Ozpin: Qrow has already confirmed my suspicion that he had something to do with the explosion, and right now, what we lack is information.

(Y/N): (in the distance) Augh!! Wha!? Oh no. I... I think I hear growling!

Ozpin: Having him attend Beacon will allow us to learn more about him, without making it seem like an interrogation.

Glynda: But is it really wise to allow someone we have no prior knowledge about, to interact with our students?

Ozpin: Would you rather we throw him into a "facility" of some kind?

Glynda took a second look at Y/N in the distance.

Glynda: *sigh* No...

Ozpin: Besides, I think that this is the best way.

Glynda looked at Ozpin confused.

Glynda: How can this be the best way?

(Y/N): (in the distance) The growling is getting closer! I... I think it smells my fear!

Ozpin: I believe by interacting with our students and learning from our institution, he might open up more and even become an ally.

Glynda: Are you really doing this for him? Or do you see him as nothing more than a potential weapon?

Ozpin didn't answer that question and simply took a sip from his mug.

(Y/N): (in the distance) AAAAAAGHHHH It's trying to eat my arm!!!! Q_Q

Glynda: *sigh* I'd better go.

Glynda walked to one of the metal platforms.

Ozpin: Ah, right. I'm going to need you to tutor him on the basics of being a Huntsman.

Glynda: What?-

Before she could ask her question, the platform launched her in the same direction Y/N flew off to, leaving Ozpin alone.

Ozpin: *sips from mug*

Present Day

Beacon Academy

(Y/N): You mean that thing where they launch you into that forest?

Yang: Yeah, that.

(Y/N): Q_Q I did that...

Ruby: Well, what are you doing here?

(Y/N): To be honest, I didn't want to come here. But Professor Ozpin had me come here as a kind of witness protection program.

Blake: Witness protection?

(Y/N): Well, I did witness a crime and I'm a person of interest in the whole 'explosion' thing.

Blake: That makes sense...

(Y/N): (mumble) And definitely not because I signed a bunch of forms that literally gave him permission to do this...

Blake: What?

(Y/N): Nothing! Besides I'm not an "official" student of the Academy, at least not in the sense you might think.

Weiss: You're not an official student?

(Y/N): My enrollment in Beacon Academy is supposed to be primarily academic. I'm technically not taking any combat classes.

Weiss: An academic student huh....

Ruby: Well, if Professor Ozpin says you're okay, then you're okay in my book!

(Y/N): Uh, thanks!

Y/N was a little surprised at Ruby's sudden change in opinion.

Ruby looked at her teammates.

Ruby: Well, guys?

Yang: Sure, why not?

Blake: You helped me with my book, so you can't be all bad.

Weiss: *sigh* Fine.

Ruby jumped to Y/N and gleefully shook his hand.

Ruby: Welcome to Beacon Academy!

(Y/N): Thank you.

Blake: So, do you need a guide for the campus?

(Y/N): Yeah I do actually. But right now I have...

Y/N pulled out a schedule from his bag.

(Y/N): I have... tutoring.

Weiss: Tutoring? What kind of tutoring?

Glynda: One-on-one tutoring.

The five teens were brought to attention when Professor Goodwitch approached.

Glynda: Good morning girls, how are you doing with your studies?

Ruby: Everything's going, well, professor.

Glynda: Excellent. Mr. (L/N), if you would follow me, we have a lot to cover today.

Glynda grabbed Y/N by the collar and began to pull him away.

(Y/N): Wait what!? Huh!?

Ruby: *sniff* Just when I made a new friend...

Yang: Another good soul is lost...

Blake: It's a dark day...

Weiss: My condolences...

The four girls looked like they were attending a funeral.

(Y/N): 0_o What!? What's going on!? Why are you guys talking like that!?

Y/N was taken away leaving team RWBY behind.

Weiss: ....I'm sure he'll be fine.

The other three looked at Weiss blankly.

Yang: Really?...

Weiss: No, but we can pretend, can't we?

A Warehouse, City of Vale

Roman: Agh! Shit!

Even though Roman had escaped the grasp of Ruby and her teammates, he still took a lot of punishment. He had just finished re-bandaging himself and taking a few pain pills, but it still hurt.

Roman: Stupid little brats...

While Roman could endure the pain to his body, the blow to his pride and reputation would take longer to heal. The overall operation wasn't jeopardized, but Roman was still humiliated at his botched robbery attempt.

As Roman brooded, his Scroll beeped. He looked to see a message from Neo: "They're here."

Roman: Tch. Of course they are.

Roman took a deep breath and gathered his belongings and left his office. Walking down the stairs he saw his guests observing the operation of the warehouse. Roman fixed his collar and approached his guests.

Roman: Good day to you. I have-

Cinder: Failed.

Cinder didn't even have to face Roman for her irritation to reach him.

Roman: It was a minor setback at most! Everything is still going to be finished on schedule.

Emerald and Mercury had slight smirks on their faces as they watched Roman basically grovel to Cinder, which didn't help him in the slightest.

Roman: We still have plenty of other stores that we've cased, we'll make up the losses in no ti-

Cinder turned to face Roman, this time her eyes weren't just glowing, but ablaze.

Cinder: I expect the best from those under me...

She slowly began to approach Roman, the yellow designs on her dress glowing brighter by the minute.

Cinder: And yet you fail me, again and again...

Roman knew very well that Cinder was significantly stronger than him. So killing him would be child's play to her.

Roman: W-wait! No one knows this town like I do! Y-you need me!

Cinder: There are others I can go to...

Roman backed into a wall and watched with fear as a fire ball appeared in Cinder's hand. The fire grew brighter and brighter and Roman's eyes grew wide as he—quite literally—saw his death approaching.

Cinder: But, that would take too much time.

As if blowing out a candle, the fire that illuminated Cinder's hand and eyes disappeared and her calm demeanor returned, letting Roman sigh in relief.

Cinder: There is something I need you to do.

Roman: *huff* *huff* And that would be?

Cinder handed Roman a small photo.

Cinder: I need you to find this person, as soon as you can.

Roman: Right...

Roman looked at the photo he was handed and immediately recognized the face on it. Cinder noticed his reaction to the photo.

Cinder: You know who that is?

Roman: Yeah. Yeah I do...

It was a photo of Y/N just entering the city of Vale.
