Chapter 45: There and Back Again
Another World
(Y/N): Ruby please slow down...
Ruby: No way!! I gotta get a closer look!
Y/N sighed, dejected that Ruby was ignoring him as he ran after her.
Overwhelmed by her curiosity, Ruby had rushed down the hill and started running toward the enormous multi-headed cadaver she spotted nearby.
(Y/N): Seriously Ruby, slow down! You reeeally don't want to get too close.
Ruby: Oh come on! I gotta see- Urrrck!!!
Mid stride, it hit her. Ruby's face contorted to unbridled disgust moments before she tumbled to the ground.
Ruby: Oh my goodness that stench!!
Ruby's eyes watered as she pulled her hands up to pinch her nose. Unfortunately, breathing through her mouth wasn't much better, and before long she was retching on the ground.
(Y/N): Yeah, let's head away from the large decomposing monster.
Y/N quickly scooped Ruby up and started heading away from the massive cadaver. After creating enough distance, Y/N put Ruby back down on the floor.
Ruby: *deep breathe*...Thank... *cough* ...you... *deep breathe*
(Y/N): No problem, there's a bush right over there.
Y/N pointed to a nearby shrub.
Ruby: Why... *cough* ...would I- Urrrrgh!?!?
Ruby's face turned green as she covered her mouth, seconds later she ran to the bush and vomited her lunch, breakfast, and maybe even some of the dinner she had the previous night.
Ruby: Uuuuughhhh...
Ruby, her face slightly pale, rubbed her stomach as she rejoined Y/N.
Ruby: ...that was awful... worse than Yang...
(Y/N): Yeah, Grimm usually just disintegrate, right? Sometimes you forget that corpses smell bad. Especially big ones...
Ruby wiped her mouth.
Ruby: Yuck. Guess I should've thought about that, huh?
(Y/N): It happens to all of us. The first time it happened to me, I threw up a lung...
Ruby smiled slightly.
Ruby: That bad?
(Y/N): Yeah...
Y/N looked back toward the massive cadaver. Much of the surrounding forest had rotted away and the blood formed slimey puddles around it. Even more sickeningly, the teen could see the mass of insects gorging themselves on the remains. Bones were visible as the insects continued their endless buffet of rotten meat.
(Y/N): Hm.
Ruby: What's up?
(Y/N): Well, two things. One: someone usually comes around to burn the corpse in order to keep this exact thing from happening.
Ruby: Well, it doesn't look like it's been dead too long. Maybe they haven't gotten around to it yet?
(Y/N): That brings me to my second point, I killed that thing a while ago...
As Y/N's mind processed the reasons why, Ruby's eyes widened at his statement.
Ruby: You killed it!?
(Y/N): Ah fuck.
Ruby: Wait, you killed that thing!?
(Y/N): Uh, no, it was old age?
By the time Y/N turned to where he left Ruby she was already atop a nearby tree taking a second look at the monster's body.
Ruby: It has a giant hole in its body! Like the Grimm you punched back in Vale!
(Y/N): It fell on a tree!
Ruby: What kind of tree leaves a hole that big!?
(Y/N): A big tree!!
Ruby dashed down the tree and stood next to Y/N.
Ruby: Did you give it an uppercut!?
(Y/N): Yes- No! It died of natural causes!
Ruby: Was the battle amazing!?
(Y/N): Let's just get out of here...
Ruby: ...are you not talking about it because it ate you or something?
(Y/N): -_- You need to stop asking questions now...
Ruby shrugged at Y/N's persistence as he began walking away.
Ruby: Well, could you at least answer if you saw Pyrrha?
Y/N stopped and turned back around.
(Y/N): I can answer that question!... I have no idea.
Ruby: What, really? Well, if you and I are here, shouldn't Pyrrha have come with us?
Y/N scratched the back of his head.
(Y/N): I mean... yeah? Granted, Cinder decided to only partially come with us.
Ruby's eyes widened when a thought came to mind.
Ruby: You don't think-
(Y/N): I really rather not humor that idea.
Ruby: Then, where is she?
(Y/N): With any luck, she's back at Vale. Come on, we've got a bit of a hike to the castle.
Ruby: Castle?
Y/N sighed.
(Y/N): Yeah, it's the closest settlement and it has a way for us to go home.
Ruby: So you have been here before.
(Y/N): -_- Let's go...
Ruby: I have a million questions!
_____
_____
A Hours Later.
Ruby: Are there fairies?
(Y/N): -_- Yes... don't trust them.
Ruby: Are there flying carpets?
(Y/N): -_- Yes... don't ride them, they don't appreciate it.
Ruby: Are potions a thing?
(Y/N): -_- Yes... Do not drink the whole thing at once.
Ruby: Are there unicorns?
(Y/N): -_- ...
Following their surprising arrival and following encounter with the husk of a fallen god, Y/N led Ruby on the road toward the castle.
With the sun now high in the sky, the two teens had traveled the remainder of the night through half of the day.
Tired of both walking and Ruby's endless line of questioning, Y/N quickly changed the subject.
(Y/N): How about we take a break? I'm tired...
Ruby: Oh! Sure!
Sitting down in the shade of a nearby tree, Y/N and Ruby temporarily stopped their journey.
Y/N sighed as he leaned back against the trunk of the tree while Ruby looked about the surrounding forest.
Ruby: If it hadn't been for the moon, you'd think we were still on Remnant.
(Y/N): Yeah... we're lucky we landed somewhere that is both safe and familiar to me.
Ruby thought for a moment before looking to Y/N.
Ruby: Can I ask you something?
(Y/N): Ruby, you've been asking me questions for the past six hours...
Ruby: Last one... for a while. I promise.
(Y/N): Fine. Ask away.
Ruby: Why do you want to stop doing all this?
Y/N lifted his head off the tree and looked at Ruby.
(Y/N): You did hear the part where I said, 'we were lucky to land here', right? Not all dimensions are as welcoming as this one.
Ruby: No, not that. I mean, why do you want to stop all of this?
Y/N sighed and let his head fall back against the tree.
Ruby: Do you not want to talk about it? Like, your scars?
When Y/N didn't answer, Ruby awkwardly looked down at her shoes.
Ruby: Guess so...
(Y/N): Ruby, do you have a favorite T.V. show?
Ruby raised her head back toward her friend.
Ruby: Huh?
(Y/N): A favorite movie, book, comic, or game?
If Ruby was expecting an answer, that wasn't it.
Ruby: Uh... yeah.
(Y/N): Something that you could watch or do and it'd never get old?
Ruby grew more confused.
Ruby: Yeah, of course I do.
(Y/N): Now... watch it again.
Ruby: I-
(Y/N): And again... and again... and again...
Ruby remained silent as Y/N continued.
(Y/N): Watch it over... and over... and over...
Y/N looked up at the leaves over his head.
(Y/N): It gets old, Ruby. It gets real old...
Ruby wanted to ask more but decided against it when Y/N closed his eyes and fell asleep.
_____
A Few Hours Later.
After their short break, the two teens continued their journey down the dirt road. Eventually, the two crested over a small hill and the large castle was brought into view.
Ruby: Woah, cool.
Still amazed at being in a completely different world, Ruby looked on in awe at the large castle and surrounding city.
The castle itself was larger than the entirety of Beacon Academy and stood taller than the academy's tallest tower. Surrounding the massive structure was the city itself. Though dwarfed in size by Vale itself, it was still a major metropolitan center. Buildings of all kinds could be seen from the hill Ruby stood on, though none outshone the castle itself. The whole city was protected by reinforced stone walls that kept the dangers of the outside at bay.
Ruby's eyes were soon drawn to something in the center of the city. Lights of all colors flickered as it appeared that some kind of festival was occurring.
Ruby: Hey, looks like something is going on.
Y/N frowned.
(Y/N): Hey, can I borrow your red cloak?
Ruby: Sure.
Ruby unhooked her cloak and handed it to Y/N, who proceeded to clamp it on himself and raise the hood over his face.
Ruby: What are you doing?
(Y/N): Who we're looking for is in the city. Well, more specifically in the castle.
Ruby: Then why are you trying to hide your face?
(Y/N): Because...
Y/N sighed.
(Y/N): ...when we get closer you'll get it.
Ruby: Okay?
Still confused on what Y/N meant, Ruby followed the teen down the hill and toward the main road towards the castle gate.
Now on a main road, the two teens started running into other people. Mostly carriages with goods and supplies, Ruby's eyes were drawn to a specific wagon's driver.
Pulling a cart full of large wooden crates was a humanoid figure with green scales, yellow eyes, and a long reptilian tail. It wore a tan tunic with a leather vest and a simple cap with a red feather in it.
But what caught Ruby the most was that it had the head of a reptile. The figure before her seemed to be like a Faunas but shared more with their animal side than human.
Lizardman: May I help you, young lady?
Ruby was brought out of her reverie and caught herself staring.
Ruby: Oh! S-sorry! I didn't mean to stare.
The lizard man's face shifted to show its own anatomical version of a smile.
Lizardman: It's alright! I take it you're not from here?
Ruby: U-uhhh.... Yeah, we kinda-
(Y/N): We're from out of town, yeah.
Y/N quickly put himself between Ruby and the lizard man in the cart, the latter of whom narrowed his eyes at the red-hooded figure before him.
Lizardman: Say, you seem kind of familiar. Have we met before?
(Y/N): Uh...
Y/N quickly pointed behind the lizard man.
(Y/N): Oh my god is that a dwarf arguing the difference between an alligator and a crocodile!?
Lizardman: What where!?!?
The reptilian man instantly snapped his head behind him, giving Y/N the chance to pull Ruby further down the road.
Ruby: Woah... than guy back there.
(Y/N): They're Lizardmen. Think Faunas but more animal-like.
Ruby: Are there more people like him?
(Y/N): -_-
Y/N sighed and gently grabbed Ruby's head and gently turned it around. The young Huntress-in-training's eyes widened.
Walking along the road with them were various groups, families, and wagons of many different kinds of people.
Some had the visage of a wolf while others had that of a cat, others seemed to be a fusion of man and fish, a group of people were short and stunted and had large beards, there were even some who were levitating off the ground.
Ruby: Woah....
(Y/N): Yeah, makes the whole race war thing with the Faunas seem kinda childish, huh?
Ruby: Y-yeah...
Ruby was in awe of just how much more this world could surprise her. She was so distracted that she didn't even notice that they were passing through the large gate leading into the town.
(Y/N): Alright, we're in. Now we just need to- 0_o
Ruby bumped into Y/N when he came to an abrupt halt.
Ruby: Ah! Hey! Why'd you sto-
Ruby's eyes were instantly pulled to what had stopped Y/N in his tracks.
A huge golden statue that looked just like Y/N was erected in the center of the town's square, standing triumphantly over the evil god's corpse.
Ruby: WHAAAAAAA- mmmmghf!!!!
Ruby's shocked reply was interrupted when Y/N quickly covered her mouth.
(Y/N): No!
Ruby: Mggghff Mhhgghfff!?!?
(Y/N): I said no!
Ruby: mmut!!
(Y/N): No!!!
Y/N began to drag Ruby past the statue as she stared in muffled shock and awe.
Ruby: mum? MMMMGGGGHHHH!?!?
After passing the gaudy statue the two came across an enormous mural depicting Y/N's fight with the ancient evil god. A lone figure standing against what seemed like a wave of darkness.
Ruby fruitlessly struggled as Y/N continued to pull her away.
(Y/N): No!
Y/N, in a panicked haze, pulled Ruby passed stalls that sold tapestries of him and his deeds, replica swords and armor of the armor he'd worn, theatrical plays that retold the story of the hero's journey, even stalls that sold cookies shaped like him.
Ruby: Q_Q
(Y/N): No! I do not want to deal with this!
Pulling Ruby, Y/N managed to make his way to the main entrance to the castle itself. Elaborate banners hung from the windows that displayed the images of the hero as well as the symbol of the kingdom itself.
Knights in shining armor stood guard as citizens from within and without the kingdom entered the castle and into the main hall. Inside the hall was decorated to welcome the people inside. People from all walks of life and species conversed with each other as they looked upon the various items on display from Y/N's time in their world.
(Y/N): Great, there's a crowd.
Ruby: Mmghhhffffghh?
(Y/N): No, you can't.
Ruby: mmmmmmghh....
Ruby drooped at Y/N's answer.
Y/N carefully scanned the room until he found who he was looking for.
(Y/N): There you are...
_____
Socializing with a small group of visitors, the Grand Wizard of the kingdom regaled his adventure with the hero who'd saved their world.
The Grand Wizard: The battle between the Hero and The Evil God was truly a sight to behold!
Young Catfolk: Were you able to help the Hero?
The old wizard smiled.
The Grand Wizard: Of course! Why, without my help he'd have never been able to face The Evil God at all!
The child's face lit up at the answer.
Man: What about the battle? How long was it?
The Grand Wizard: Truly it was something out of myth! For days the Hero battled the multi-headed monstrosity!
Bringing out his inner showman, the wizard conjured a small illusion that displayed the Hero as a humanoid shape of light and a large shadow that represented the Evil God as a multi-headed shadow.
Though some among the onlookers were slightly frightened, most drew ever so slightly closer, entranced by the tale.
The Grand Wizard: Blow after blow, strike after strike, the Hero and the Evil God fought, both prepared to die.
The illusion danced before the audience, showing how the Hero and Evil God 'fought' each other.
Lizardfolk: And?
The Grand Wizard: It would not be until the Hero looked to me and asked for an enchantment to enhance his own body did he launch one final assault upon his foe.
The illusion of the hero raised its arm and began to shine brighter. A moment later the Hero's form charged the Evil God.
As the Hero charged the center of the dark shadow before it, the illusion of the monster fully consumed the Hero's form causing a few of the crowd to gasp.
The Grand Wizard: Just as it seemed that all hope was lost...
Suddenly a small light appeared within the form of the Evil God.
The Grand Wizard: ...the Hero emerged victorious!
The writhing shadow instantly exploded into a ball of light and small particles of shimmering light gently fell to the floor. Now standing triumphant where the monster stood was the Hero, raising his arm in victory.
The crowd cheered and applauded the wizard and his tale, which brought a smile to the man's face.
The Grand Wizard: Thank you! Thank you! If you would all head to the courtyard a grand feast has been prepared for the general public!
The crowd soon left, eager to enjoy the free food.
???: You are such a dirty liar.
The wizard's attention was pulled toward an individual with a red hood covering his face and pulling along a girl with him.
The Grand Wizard: Pardon?
Red-Hooded Figure: That's not what happened.
The wizard blinked, surprised at the person's audacity.
The Grand Wizard: Young man, I don't know who you are but-
The wizard's retort was cut short when the figure instantly got into his face revealing who it was that so rudely confronted him.
(Y/N): Lucky for you I don't actually care!!
The wizards eye's widened.
The Grand Wizard: Wha-!? You- you've returned!! The Hero has retu-
WHACK
Before the wizard could complete his shocked sentence, Y/N grabbed a nearby wooden chair and broke it over the old man's head.
Ruby: 0_o
(Y/N): I ain't got time for that.
While making sure no one was looking, Y/N nonchalantly grabbed the wizards leg and pulled him into the back hallway.
_____
_____
The Wizard's Tower
The Grand Wizard: It is truly great to see you again Y/N!
With a bandage on his head, the Wizard welcomed the hero of his world with a warm smile.
(Y/N): -_- Yeah...
The Grand Wizard: No really! I did not think I'd ever see you again!
Having brought Ruby and the Wizard to the latter's tower, Y/N could remove his hood and converse without fear of people noticing him.
The Wizard turned his head to Ruby.
The Grand Wizard: And who might you be, young lady?
Ruby: Ruby Rose! Uh... my lord!
(Y/N): Do not call him 'lord'.
The Wizard chuckled and bowed slightly in return.
Merasmus: An honor to meet you, I am Grand Wizard Merasmus!
(Y/N): Wait, you have a name?
Merasmus: Of course I do, you just finished your journey before I could introduce myself to you formally.
(Y/N): Oh. I feel kind of bad now actually.
Ruby glanced around the room, noticing the various vials filled with different colored liquids, the book shelves filled with tomes, and strange relics of all shapes and sizes.
Ruby: So, you're a wizard?
Merasmus: Of course!
Merasmus held out his hand and a fireball the size of a soccer ball manifested on his palm.
Ruby: Woah!!
A moment later the fireball morphed into a swarm of butterflies and began to fly around the surprised young girl.
Ruby: So cool!!
The butterflies flew circles around her before harmlessly dissipating.
Ruby clapped at the incredible display of magic before her.
Ruby: That was amazing!
Merasmus: Thank you!
Merasmus gave Ruby a smile and then turned back toward Y/N.
Merasmus: Now, I'm sure your visit isn't a social call, so how can I help you?
(Y/N): Right, we need to go back to our world. Or rather, go back to the world that Ruby is from.
Merasmus: Ah, already on another adventure I see!
(Y/N): More like a long string of unfortunate events.
Merasmus: Well, I can do that for you easily!
Merasmus turned toward Ruby.
Merasmus: If you would, Ms. Rose, stick out your hand.
Ruby: Sure.
Ruby gave the arcane master her hand and the man closed his eyes. After mumbling to himself a small symbol appeared on Ruby's hand.
Ruby: What's that?
Merasmus: That would be...
Merasmus opened his eyes and the symbol on Ruby's hand lifted off her and into the air in front of the wizard.
Merasmus: ...the way home for you!
Ruby: It is?
Ruby stared confused at the now hovering symbol.
(Y/N): Just think of it as the inter-dimensional address for Remnant.
Ruby: Oh.
Merasmus: What's an 'address'?
(Y/N): Don't worry about it. So, can you send us on our way?
Merasmus carefully studied the symbol in front of him for a few seconds before giving his answer.
Merasmus: Yes! I do believe I can!
(Y/N): Great! The sooner the better.
Ruby: Aww. I didn't even get to look around...
Merasmus: Well, I'll need to get the magic circle prepared so you're free to go and look around while I set it up.
(Y/N): Well, how long is that going to take?
Merasmus: I'd say it'll be ready by tomorrow morning!
(Y/N): That long?
Merasmus: Well, I don't want to send you to the wrong dimension. Besides, it's only until tomorrow morning.
Y/N sighed.
(Y/N): Well, if it's only until tomorrow, I guess you can go look around a little-... she's already gone isn't she?
Merasmus: She left when I said, 'you're free to go'.
(Y/N): -_-
Though Merasmus was still carefully studying the symbol, he could sense Y/N's concern.
Merasmus: She's only a little girl, and it's only for a single night, what harm could she cause?
Y/N frowned at Merasmus.
(Y/N): Why do you do that?
Merasmus: Do what?
(Y/N): Tempt fate like that?
Merasmus: Honestly, I think you're overreacting.
(Y/N): Yeah? You don't have some kind of malignant spirit or god that follows you around and somehow makes my life overly difficult like some cruel writer!
Merasmus: See? Overreacting.
Y/N definitely took Merasmus' words to heart and never thought about the 'cruel writer' idea ever again.
Ever.
(Y/N): -_-
_____
_____
Town Square
Sunset.
Taking the opportunity to actually explore, Ruby ran all the way back to the town square to take a second look at what she had missed.
The first being the enormous statue of Y/N.
Ruby: Wow...
The statue depicted Y/N raising his right fist skyward as he stood atop the head of the massive creature they'd seen earlier.
Ruby: Man, Yang would be so jealous...
Upon closer inspection, Ruby noticed a small plaque beneath the statue.
In honor of one who came to our world and selflessly put his life on the line for people he'd never met.
Ruby: So, cool...
Having seen enough of the statue, Ruby turned her attention to the enormous mural she'd seen.
Moving further down the street, Ruby stood before the painted mural of Y/N standing before the Evil God.
Ruby: Y/N being in the picture aside...
Ruby pulled out her Scroll and brought up the picture function.
Ruby: ...this would make a cool Scroll background.
After taking a quick picture of the mural Ruby noticed a small message in the bottom right corner of the mural.
Thank you for choosing to save our world
Ruby: These people really appreciate what you've done for them, Y/N. So, why do you not want to stay here?
Merchant: Last call for cookies!!!
Ruby's focus was instantly brought behind her toward the stall that sold cookies.
Merchant: Last call for cook-
Ruby: Can I have some?
Merchant: Gah!!!
The stall owner was not expecting the young girl he'd seen by the mural to instantaneously disappear and then suddenly reappear right in front of him.
Merchant: I-I see you really like cookies, young lady...
Ruby: You could say that!
Ruby smiled as she looked down at the selection of delectable delights before her.
Merchant: My special 'hero' cookies are chocolate-chip with chocolate filling!
Ruby's eyes sparkled as her mouth drooled.
Merchant: We also have regular chocolate-chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, gingersnap and white chocolate!
At this point a veritable stream of drool fell from Ruby's jaw.
Merchant: ...I see you like cookies.
Ruby: Yeah...
Merchant: Well, do you have any money?
Ruby quickly shut her mouth and quickly rummaged around her pockets, finding only Lien.
Ruby: Uh... do you take these?
Ruby offered the stall owner her Lien, but the man shook his head.
Merchant: Sorry young lady, I only take gold pieces.
Ruby: Aww....
Seeing Ruby's saddened disposition, the stall owner relented and came up with an idea.
Merchant: How about this? A friend of mine works at the weapons shop right over there.
The merchant gestured over to a neary shop.
Merchant: He won't admit it, but he really needs help sorting all the gear he has in the back.
Ruby: Weapons shop!?
The idea had not crossed her mind to even consider what sorts of armaments another world had to offer.
Merchant: Yep! You think you can handle that?
Ruby beamed.
Ruby: Yes!
Not wasting a single moment, the young Huntress-in-training ran toward the shop.
The store's bell rang as Ruby opened the door. Much like her own world, the store's shelves were stocked with swords, axes, spears, and other weapons that someone would need to protect themselves in a world like this. Mannequins displayed polished armor suits and matching shields and display cases held small ornate daggers.
???: Yeh better be buyin something!!
A loud aggravated voice boomed at Ruby from behind the store's counter, but when she looked there was no one there.
Ruby: Uh...
???: Did you not 'ear me? No window shoppers!
Ruby was confused that she was being shouted at by someone who wasn't there.
Ruby: The guy outside said you needed help with-
???: I don't need 'elp with nothin!!
It was at this point that the person shouting at Ruby revealed themself. If Ruby was expecting anything, it wasn't a gruff looking stunted man with a large beard stepping around the counter.
Ruby blinked in surprise.
Dwarven Man: What? Yeh ne'er seen a dwarf before?
The dwarf stood a scant four feet in height, but only an idiot would make fun of him for that. Despite his height he had a steely gaze and a heavy brown beard that reached down to his waist. He wore a beaten white tunic and heavy leather apron and matching gloves.
Ruby: Err... no.
The dwarf raised an eyebrow.
Dwarven Man: Y'er not from 'ere, are yeh?
Ruby: Yeah, you could say that...
The dwarf looked Ruby up and down.
Dwarven Man: I know of one other person who is 'not from 'ere'
Ruby: You do?
Dwarven Man: Aye. And he's a bastard!
Ruby: ...what?
The dwarf shrugged as he began digging through the chest he had behind the counter.
Dwarven Man: I go t'rough the effort of makin' the best armor I could muster, and he doesn't fuckin need it!!!
Ruby: Uh... I-
Dwarven Man: Kills the fuckin' beast in a day!
Ruby: I-
Dwarven Man: Coulda' used tha' exposure! Got shafted I did!
Ruby frowned as the dwarf started going off on a tirade, completely forgetting her existence in his shop.
Ruby sighed and ignored the dwarf's rant as she casually walked behind the counter and into the back room.
Dwarven Man: Go t'rough the struggle of makin' e'ery piece a me'al!! Gah!!!
The dwarf began throwing things behind him as he grew increasingly more frustrated rummaging through the chest.
Dwarven Man: Make an armor for the 'ero, she says! Bah! C'mon! It's got to be 'ere!
It clearly seemed as though there were more items in the chest than structurally possible but never the less the dwarf continued throwing things out of it.
Dwarven Man: I'm 'hinkin, this is me chance! My shot at fame! Spen' so much on gettin' e'ery thing, and he alrea'y killed it! I have a right mind t- Ah found it!!
Finally finding what he'd been searching for, the dwarf smiled as he grabbed his carved wooden smoke pipe.
Dwarven Man: There ya are! You beau'iful thing.
As the dwarf smiled at finding his pipe, Ruby tapped on his shoulder.
Dwarven Man: Gaaaahh!!
The sudden tapping on his shoulder startled the dwarf causing him to jump.
Dwarven Man: Ya scared me 'alf to death ya brat!!
Ruby: Oh, sorry.
The dwarf glared at Ruby.
Dwarven Man: What are yeh even still doin 'ere? I t'ought I told yeh to-
Ruby: You didn't. And I cleaned up your backroom.
The dwarf blinked.
Dwarven Man: Yah did what?
Ruby pulled the dwarf by his shirt and brought him to the doorway behind the counter.
Ruby: See?
True to her word, Ruby had reorganized every sword, dagger, axe, shield, spear, tool, everything. The store's entire backroom stock was now neatly organized and easily reachable for future use.
The store's dwarven owner was speechless.
Dwarven Man: H-how did- When did yah?
Ruby: No need to thank me! I actually did this so the cookie stall guy would give me free cookies. So, if you'd excuse me...
Before Ruby could head out, the dwarf stopped her.
Rantharm: A'right, a'right. I may have been a bit... uh... rude. Please, allow me to in'roduce me'self. The name's Rantharm!
Ruby: Ruby Rose!
Rantharm: Seein' as how yah sor'ed out my store, I 'ake it yeh know a thing or two about smithin?
Ruby: Uhhh.... I like weapons, if that's the same thing...
Ruby reached behind and pulled 'Crescent Rose' from her belt.
Rantharm: Weapons?
Ratharm gave Ruby's compacted scythe a look over
Rantharm: That don't look like any weapon I've e'er se-
Ruby flicked the switch on her compacted weapon and it instantly reconfigured itself into its full weaponized form.
Rantharm: I'll be!...
This time it was Rantharm's turn to be in awe as he watched in stunned silence as the small box in Ruby's hand transformed into a massive scythe.
Rantharm: That's- that's amazin!
Ruby grinned with pride at the dwarf's compliment.
Ruby: Thank you! I designed it myself!
Rantharm: Please, young lady, yeh got to let me 'ave a closer look!
Ruby: Errr....
Rantharm: H-how 'bout this? Yeh let me have a gander at that scythe, and I'll give it an enchantment!
Ruby appeared confused.
Ruby: Enchantment?
Rantharm: Yeh really are jus' like him... I mean I'll give yer' weapon a magical upgrade!
Ruby beamed with excitement.
Ruby: Really!?
Rantharm: Sure! Yeh helped me, and I'll 'elp you!
Ruby: Will this take long?
Rantharm: I promise ta' 'ave the scythe back to yah by morn'!
Ruby: Oh, well that's when I got to leave.
Rantharm: Perfect! Hand it over and I'll get to work!
Ruby handed the elated dwarf 'Crescent Rose' and he gingerly received it.
Rantharm: Ahhh.... There she is! So finely made! I can't wait tah' give it a closer look!
Ruby: I'll see you tomorrow morning?
Rantharm: Of course! I'll be up all night studying this thing!
Ruby smiled at the dwarf's excitement at 'Crescent Rose' before heading out and to the cookie stall.

Meanwhile
(Y/N): What do you mean, they're not here anymore!?
Merasmus: It is as I said, they aren't there anymore.
After Ruby left, Y/N remembered the last time he had his gloves was in the very dimension and so he'd asked Merasmus about them and received an answer he did not like.
Following after, Merasmus started leading Y/N through the castle toward where he'd stored Y/N's vaunted gloves.
(Y/N): It's not like they got up and walked away....... Right?
Merasmus: I don't know what else to tell you. One day they were there, the next, gone.
The pair eventually arrived at a set of ornate large wooden double doors, which caused Y/N to frown.
(Y/N): Really? Two big double doors?
Merasmus chuckled nervously.
Merasmus: I-it's not that bad...
(Y/N): ...it's worse inside, isn't it?
Merasmus tried not to look Y/N in the eye as he pushed open the doors.
The doors revealed a large room that was beautifully decorated in the castle's finest decorations. The walls were adorned by murals and paintings of Y/N and his battle with the Evil God.
All of the room's decorations were designed around a central spot on the back wall. A red banner was hung above a spot that was clearly missing something.
(Y/N): -_-
Merasmus: You have to understand, you accomplished something so great that it'd ruin our own reputation had we not done this!
Y/N slowly turned his head toward Merasmus.
Merasmus: Alright, it's a little over the top...
(Y/N): Do you have any idea where they went?
Merasmus: Nope.
(Y/N): Were they stolen?
Merasmus: If they were, I'd know. I placed a tracking magic on it, I'd be able to track them anywhere in the world.
Y/N sighed.
(Y/N): Welp, guess I gotta add it to the list of other equipment I've lost...
Merasmus: I'm sorry, if I could find where they went I'd definitely bring them back.
(Y/N): Not your fault... Well, this brings me to my other question I meant to ask.
Merasmus: What would that be?
(Y/N): How has it been since I've left?
Merasmus appeared confused.
Merasmus: You mean since you defeated the Evil God? About a month. Why?
(Y/N): Only a month? You're sure?
Merasmus: Of course! It's why everyone is celebrating, word is still getting out of your heroic deeds!
(Y/N): Great, time works differently here...
Merasmus: Forgive me but, I'm a bit confused.
(Y/N): Don't worry about it, just finish that magic stuff you do to get me and Ruby home as soon as you can.
Merasmus: Worry not! As I said, it shall be ready by morning!
(Y/N): Thanks.
Merasmus: That being said, am I safe to assume that Ms. Rose and yourself are both famished?
(Y/N): Actually yeah, we could go for some food.
Merasmus: Perfect! I've already arranged for a dinner to be held!
(Y/N): Wait, how'd you do that? You were with me the whole time.
Merasmus: I'm magic! I merely told the chefs of our castle to prepare a great feast for you! Don't worry, I made certain that no one of the public knows of this.
(Y/N): How considerate. A feast sounds great actually, so long as you didn't invite the-... you invited the princess didn't you?
Merasmus: Uh... she's kinda the kingdom's ruler...
(Y/N): -_-

Royal Dining Hall
Thirty Minutes Later
After Ruby returned from exploring the city, both her and Y/N were escorted to the Royal Dining Hall to attend the private feast in Y/N's honor.
The dining hall itself was smaller than the main hall that Ruby and Y/N came across earlier but was much better decorated. While the main hall was dedicated to Y/N, the dining hall was dedicated to the royal family and the kingdom itself.
Huge portraits of the kingdom's prominent rulers--both past and present--adorned the hall's walls in ornate portraits.
Thanks to the room's decorations, Ruby was able to get a better look at what the kingdom was like outside of praising Y/N's accomplishments.
Ruby: Ooooh, fancy...
Ruby nudged Y/N.
Ruby: ...don't you think?
(Y/N): -_-
Ruby: Hm. You know, I see you make that face all the time, but I can never tell what it means.
When Y/N didn't answer, Ruby began gently poking his face.
Ruby: *poke* Are you happy? *poke* Are you sad? *poke* Are you embarrassed? *poke* What does it-
Servant: Announcing, Princess Lumara!!
Ruby and Y/N's 'conversation' was interrupted when one of the castle's many servants announced the arrival of the princess.
Stepping through the two double doors wearing a beautifully decorated dress and glittering crown, Princess Lumara proudly entered the dining room.
When Merasmus rose from his seat Ruby followed suit quickly after, not wanting to be rude. Y/N, however, didn't move, his expression unchanged.
(Y/N): -_-
Princess Lumara: Y/N!!!
Overtaken by her joy, Princess Lumara ran toward her seated hero and gave him a warm hug.
Princess Lumara: It's so good to see you!
(Y/N): -_-
The princess quickly let go.
Princess Lumara: You must be utterly famished!
The princess turned to one of the servants who escorted.
Princess Lumara: Please tell the chefs to serve our food!
The servant nodded and a moment later food began being served on the large dining room table. As the servants placed the food Princess Lumara looked at Y/N.
Princess Lumara: Are you here to stay?
(Y/N): -_-
Merasmus cleared his throat.
Merasmus: I don't mean to impose, princess, but Y/N came with a guest.
Princess Lumara: A guest?
Merasmus pointed behind Y/N and toward Ruby.
Ruby: Hello! Uh... your majesty? I'm Ruby Rose!
Ruby tried her best not to be rude to the princess before her and was unsure what the proper courtesy was; In the end she awkwardly tried to curtsy.
Princess Lumara: Oh what a lovely servant you have Y/N!
(Y/N): -_-
Merasmus: Um, princess. She's not-
Ruby: I'm not a servant though?
Princess Lumara: Then what is your relationship with Y/N?
Ruby was mostly confused at the princess' strange question.
Ruby: We're classmates?
Princess Lumara: 'classmates'!? How absurd! What does Y/N possibly need to learn that he doesn't already know?
Ruby: Uh... what?
The princess narrowed her eyes at Ruby.
Princess Lumara: If I didn't know better, I'd say you're-!
Merasmus interrupted the princess by clearing his throat.
Merasmus: Princess, this dinner is for our guests. Please try to remember that.
The princess at first seemed embarrassed before taking a deep breath and composing herself.
Princess Lumara: O-of course...
The princess turned to Ruby and curtsied.
Princess Lumara: My apologies Ms. Rose. I acted quite rude to you.
Ruby: Oh, it's no big deal!
Ruby chuckled nervously at the awkward shift in the conversation's tone.
Princess Lumara: I'm sure while you moved about the kingdom you've seen just how much we treasure Y/N and his actions.
Ruby: Yeah, it's like a Y/N themed festival outside.
Princess Lumara: To us, he's a legend beyond comparison. He accomplished something that no one could have ever dreamed of, so it was a little unbelievable that he'd need or want to go to school.
After seeing just how much this world adored Y/N, Ruby thought back to when he first attended Beacon.
Ruby: Well, when you put it like that it does seem kind of weird.
Princess Lumara: Well, enough about that. Y/N, how have you- eh?
When the princess turned to where Y/N was last seated he was gone.
Princess Lumara: Wha- where did he go?
Merasmus sighed.
Merasmus: He left after you let go of your hug.
Instead of being upset, the princess seemed to grow more enamored with Y/N.
Princess Lumara: Just like a hero of myth, so mysterious...
Ruby looked at the princess more confused than before.
Princess Lumara: He has likely gone to the roof to gaze upon the horizon in a heroic glare.

Outside on the Roof
Sitting down, alone in the dark, Y/N sat with his knees tucked to his chest.
(Y/N): -_-
Y/N's stomach growled.
(Y/N): I forgot to grab a plate of food...
_____
Princess Lumara: Well, it'd be rude to not enjoy the dinner prepared for us. Come, let us enjoy ourselves!
Ruby: Yes! Food!
After everyone was seated, each began to enjoy the food that was provided.
As they ate, Ruby raised a question.
Ruby: This might seem a bit weird to ask but, do you guys know who Y/N is?
Merasmus: Ah, the question of the century. To be completely honest, I thought you'd know more than us, seeing as how you're his classmate.
Ruby: Not really. I know he's a good baker in the kitchen though!
Merasmus scratched his chin.
Merasmus: Really? I had no idea.
Princess Lumara: Do you think we could get him to make us anything?
Ruby: Well, I guess you'd have to find him first.
Merasmus chuckled lightly.
Merasmus: Truth be told Ms. Rose, we don't know much about him at all. After we summoned him a month ago, he managed to slay the Evil God in a few days. It's quite amazing every time I think about it.
Ruby stopped eating and looked at Merasmus.
Ruby: A month ago? But Y/N has been attending my school for about seven months.
Merasmus: Really?
Princess Lumrara: You got to spend time with him for seven months!?
Merasmus seemed to be in deep thought for a moment before speaking again.
Merasmus: I see now!
Ruby: See what?
Merasmus: Time flows differently in each world!
Ruby: Huh?
Merasmus: If it's been seven months for you and one month for us then it would mean...
Merasmus thought silently for a moment.
Merasmus: ...it would mean that a day here is about a week in your world. I see now, why Y/N was so adamant about getting yourselves home.
Ruby: Wait, a week!? That's not- That means-!
Ruby quickly turned to Merasmus.
Ruby: You have to get us home! Something happened in our world and we need to get home!
Merasmus: Do not worry, Ms. Rose, it will be ready by morning.
Ruby: Can you make it go any faster?
Merasmus: As much as I'd like to, I don't want to risk sending you to the wrong world.
Princess Lumara: Forgive me for asking, but what has happened that you must leave so urgently?
A worried look appeared on Ruby's face.
Ruby: There was an attack on our school and the city at large.
Princess Lumara: My goodness!
Ruby: A lot of people were hurt and I don't even know if my friends are okay, especially my sister...
Ruby thought back to when she saw Yang, her arm severed.
Princess Lumara: I-I had no idea. I'm truly sorry.
As the mood made a depressive turn, Merasmus looked at Ruby with sympathy.
Merasmus: I can understand your concern Ms. Rose and I'll try my best to hasten my efforts on locating your world, but for now you could use some rest.
Ruby: I... *sigh* I guess you're right.
Before Merasmus could gesture toward the servant, Princess Lumara rose from her chair.
Princess Lumara: Please, allow me to escort you to your room.

Castle Hallways
Leading Ruby through the castle's many hallways, Princess Lumara led her guest toward one of the many available guest rooms.
For most of the walk the two women remained silent, Ruby was too concerned for her friends back on Remnant to strike up a conversation. As such, it was the princess that spoke up first.
Princess Lumara: It is very admirable to be so concerned for people other than yourself.
Ruby: O-oh... thank you.
Princess Lumara: You actually remind me of Y/N himself.
Ruby: Thanks but, I don't think I could kill that big monster by myself.
Princess Lumara: It is not your strength that I refer to. It is your genuine concern for others.
Ruby looked at the princess as she continued to speak.
Princess Lumara: When Y/N first arrived in my world he seemed distraught at being here.
Princess Lumara chuckled to herself.
Princess Lumara: Actually, it seemed like he'd heard the exact speech I was giving him a thousand times...
Ruby: If you knew he didn't want to be here, why'd you keep him?
Princess Lumara: Well, we were desperate. There had been many attempts to stop the Evil God before, but all had failed. But that wasn't the reason why he stayed.
Ruby: Then what was?
Princess Lumara: Even though he seemed tired and didn't want to be here, he still listened.
A small smile formed on the princess' face.
Princess Lumara: The first words out of his mouth were, "which way is it?". At first, we were confused by what he'd meant. After clarifying, we thought we had summoned the wrong hero, but then he marched on.
As the pair passed a set of large windows, the princess gazed out over the kingdom.
Princess Lumara: Merasmus went with him to advise the summoned hero, but from what he told me, Y/N only ever asked if there were any civilian populations near the Evil God. He never asked for anything or even demanded payment. Even though he clearly did not want to be here, he still fought for this world like it was his own.
Soon Ruby and the princess reached the guest room and they both stopped.
Princess Lumara: That is one of the reasons why I admire him so much, unmatched selflessness.
Ruby: Why are you telling me this?
The princess took a deep breath and looked Ruby in the eyes.
Princess Lumara: I have a request to make of you.
Ruby: A request?
Princess Lumara: Yes. After you return to your world in the morning, please look after Y/N.
Ruby: Look after him?
Princess Lumara: Obviously you should take care of your friends and family as well, but just keep an eye on him.
Ruby: I'm not really sure what I could do for him, you know, considering all that stuff he's able to do himself.
Princess Lumara: I know it seems like a strange request but...
The princess sighed, unsure of what to say.
Princess Lumara: Just take care of him, please.
Ruby: Sure.
The princess smiled.
Princess Lumara: Thank you.
After a short curtsy, the princess left Ruby to her quarters.
Ruby: Take care of him? From what?

The Following Morning
After finishing getting dressed, Ruby heard knocks on her door.
(Y/N): Hey Ruby, you awake?
Y/N's was answered by the door opening.
Ruby: Yep!
(Y/N): Alright, let's head to the castle's summoning circle.
Before they started walking Ruby realized she hadn't gotten 'Crescent Rose' back from Rantharm.
Ruby: Wait, I need to get my scythe!
(Y/N): You lost your scythe?
Ruby: Not really, I gave it to the owner of the weapon shop in town to look at.
(Y/N): Ah, that would explain the very mean dwarf.
Ruby: You know Rantharm?
(Y/N): So his name is Rantharm? Well, at least I now have a name to the very mean dwarf I meant earlier -_-.
Ruby: Wait, he's here?
(Y/N): Yep. He's waiting by the summoning circle.
Ruby: Did he have my scythe?
(Y/N): I did see him have it.
Ruby: Oh boy...
After walking a short distance, Y/N and Ruby found themselves in front of the summoning circle. Waiting for them was the princess, Merasmus, and Rantharm.
Rantharm: Aaahh good tah see yah Ms. Rose!
Rantharm glared at Y/N.
Ranthatm: Hero.
(Y/N): What did I even do?
Merasmus: The circle is ready to send the two of you home.
Merasmus pointed to the glowing circle on the floor.
Rantharm: Bef'ore yah' go, give me yer' hand Ms. Rose.
Ruby: Are you going to explain where my scythe is?
Rantharm grinned.
Rantharm: Aye.
Ruby gave Rantharm her hand and the dwarf placed his over it. After muttering something Ruby couldn't really hear a symbol of a scythe appeared on the top of his hand.
Ruby: What are you doing?
Rantharm: Watch.
Rantharm removed his hands and the symbol now appeared on Ruby's hand.
Confused on what happened, Ruby looked at Rantharm confused.
Ruby: Though this is a cool looking tattoo, this isn't my scythe.
Rantharm: Close yer' eyes and picture yer' scythe in yah hands.
Ruby closed her eyes and the scythe symbol began to glow, a moment later 'Crescent Rose' was in her hands.
Ruby: WOOOAAAAHHHHH!!!!
Rantharm smiled proudly.
Rantharm: Yep! You can now summon yer' scythe from anywhere!
Ruby: Really!? That's so cool!!
(Y/N): How come you never did this for me?
Rantharm glared daggers at Y/N.
Rantharm: Cause ya' killed the fuckin' monster in three days!!!
(Y/N): ;_; oh...
Rantharm turned back to Ruby.
Rantharm: That's not all! Think abou' yer' scythe bein' on fire!
Ruby closed her eyes again and pictured the blade of her scythe lit aflame, another moment later the blade of her scythe was suddenly engulfed in fire.
Ruby: WOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA-
(Y/N): Oh come on!
Rantharm: Shut yer' trap! Yah' got fists that can kill a god!
(Y/N): Q_Q
Rantharm turned to Ruby who was still freaking out over her literal burning blade.
Ruby: This is amazing! Thank you Rantharm!
Rantharm: No problem! You can change da' elemen' just by thinkin' it! And of course turn it off by thinking or sheathing it.
Ruby thought about extinguishing the blade and it followed suit.
Ruby: This is amazing! Everyone at home will be so jealous!
Rantharm gave Ruby a thumbs up.
Rantharm: Make sure to make em' real green wit' envy!
(Y/N): I want something like that too...
Rantharm: Yah' want me to light yer' hands on fire? I can do that for yah'
(Y/N): Q_Q Nevermind...
Merasmus: If that was everything, please step inside the circle.
Y/N and Ruby stepped onto the circle together.
Ruby: Thank you everyone!
(Y/N): Yeah... thanks.
Princess Lumara: Good luck brave heroes!
Merasmus: Don't forget to write!
Rantharm: You let Ms. Rose get 'urt in anyway, I'll find a way to put mah' boot up yer' arse!
(Y/N): Q_Q
A bright light filled the room and a moment later Y/N and Ruby were sent on their way.

Sorry a little late on this! I was re-writing certain characters more often than I'd care to admit :P
Definitely not because I procrastinated...
You can't prove that.
