Problems With Parents

Little Princess sat outside her home with an angry pout on her face. Divya, who had to go to the session of the day, had to pick up the princess on the way.

Divya:  Ready princess?

Little Princess: Yes sis! Let’s go, anyway, people here at home won’t let me live in peace.

Divya: What happened princess? Are you okay?

Little Princess: No sis, They always find things wrong in me and whenever I take the phone for some time they come and give a big lecture to me. It irks me a lot.

Divya: That’s common dear! Let’s change your mood with the session. Come let’s go.

Divya and Princess reached the office to find Zohra waiting along with Teslim.

Divya: Heya people

Zohra: Hello sis!

Teslim: Hello!

Zohra: Oww! Why is the princess upset?

Divya: Just a fight with parents. By the way, isn't Riya here yet?

Zohra: She told me she is on the way! She will be here any time.

Riya: I am here! So sorry the traffic was hectic.

Divya: It’s okay sis! By the way, what is the topic for today?

Teslim:  We need to decide that. Sighs. Why are we so late and we still didn’t yet decide who is going to do what?

Zohra: Umm. I have a topic, why don’t we go with the present situation of a princess? Most of us can relate to it too.

Adiba: I am here, oops I thought I missed the session.

Divya: OMG! Did we all just forget our buttercup? How could we? Come dear! You are just here on time.

Adiba: You all forgot a small newborn baby? How could you? I am hurt.

Zohra: Adiba! Sowwie na! Come come, before we get too late for the session.

Adiba: It's okay! It's okay!  I was just being dramatic. What is the topic decided?

Little Princess: Problem with parents!

Adiba: Noted! The topic seems interesting. Now before all our audience kills us or throws tomatoes on us for being late, let’s head to our session.

They all walk onto the stage as if they are some royal queens.

Divya: Hello to everyone! Welcome to Ted Talks with Teen Fix [ Low budget ] Don’t ask us why we are late? We needed some time to come up with an amazing topic for you all! It’s a topic which you all can easily relate to. Any guesses?

*Audience stare at Divya with an annoying face*

Divya: Okay! Okay! Don’t look at me like that. First of all, I came late and I am wasting time.  So yes the topic for today is “ Problems with Parents From a Teenagers point of view”

*Banner rolls behind her and she smiles looking at it*

Divya: Also here we have Zohra, Princess, Teslim, Riya, Adiba aka Buttercup with us for this discussion.

All of them settle down in their chairs and now it feels more like a round table conference.

Zohra: Here I start with today’s discussion. Teens hide things from parents because parents can't be friends with their children. They set strict standards of not doing this, not doing that and many more. Also due to the detachment of children from parents and excessive attachment to the internet and social media, we don't feel the need to share anything with parents.

Teslim:  Also, sometimes they feel parents will limit them from exploring further opportunities. They feel they might control them and stop them from doing something which they like.

Princess: Teens feel that they are being pressured for not using phones or any social media but at the same time they do not understand that they are protecting themselves from the bad things which exist in society. I feel that they should suggest teens more like friends rather than showing like they are controlling them.

Adiba: Talking about controlling, I agree with the princess. Maybe if they say in a cool way they would understand. After all, they have so many hormones and emotions overflowing, sometimes they may shout back at parents too.

Divya: Yes! They must understand that they have also gone through this phase and give some time to their children to adjust and learn things. After all, experience is the best teacher.

The discussion was going on seriously and they noticed Riya dozed off. Adiba signalled about it to others and they were a step away from laughing out loud.

Zohra who was sitting aside from Riya nudged her and she woke up in a jerk.

Princess: Yes! I agree Riya will continue from here!

Princess said and Riya looked at her in a horrified expression.

Riya: Ahem.Yes! Divya was right. Let me narrate to you all a short story about something related to our topic today.

It’s a middle-class family.  The members of the family have been in a complete mess for a few months. Fights have become a routine and some days become too serious for them to bear.

Now, let me tell you the reason why this family can’t be the perfect happy one. The reason is their elder sixteen-year-old son Jai. This is not what I think, rather this is what the parents think.

According to them, Jai has grown up to become a spoilt boy not meeting their expectations and above all is their being middle-class drama making them even more worried about their son’s future.

“You can’t go on missing your tutions like this, it has been a week. Are you even listening, Jai”, his mother asked him, being frustrated about the mess which was going on.

“I have a headache”, replied Jai calmly.

“And what did you have yesterday, stomach pain or something?”, she taunted him.

“No, I had tooth pain.”, replied Jai again very calmly.

“A tooth pain! Aren’t you ashamed of mocking me like this when I am blowing my mind on you? God knows how on this Earth you get to sleep by taking away ours. Your performance in class is pathetic and next year is your board exams. You will be in college then. Your friends have already started preparing for entrance exams and you are still stuck in passing your school exams. What has made you so lazy in life? You look like a complete idiot. Somehow we agreed to give you tutions saving everything we could from our salaries and look at you, you don’t even bother to attend them also. I pray to God every day to give you an awakening but I don’t know what wrong have I done that God is not listening to me”, shouted Jai’s mother.

Jai who was sitting on the chair with a book in his hand stood up.

“It’s time for Pia’s school bus, I should leave.”, Jai said and left.

Jai returns home with his sister Pia. Pia is the youngest in the family and is out of all these issues going around her. She is in a very jolly mood and runs straight away to her mom in the kitchen.

“Mumma, see I got the highest marks in my class”, she showed her report card to her mother. Pia hoped that she would be happy with her marks and not scold her brother.

She took her report card and saw, it was all A grades. She took that report card and went and threw that report card on Jai's face. He looked shocked.

"See, see that report card. See how hard your sister studies and she got all good marks. What about you? Failed in two subjects again? ", she questioned.

" Mom, next time. I promise I will work hard", he apologized looking down.

"Your next time never comes. Learn something from your sister", she said and went from there.

"I am a sorry brother I didn't mean to but mother just lashed at you. Don't worry! Next time you will do well! ", she said and went away.

In this case, Jai was trying hard to reach his parent's expectations. And in this process, he was pressuring himself which is not good at all. Nobody understands his feelings and his POV. Parents also need to understand the side of teenage children.

Zohra: I agree with the story and the thing Riya said. It happens in every household in one way or another. In some cases, it might not be that serious, while others we don't know. Don't pressurize them to do things, instead make them love what they do!

Divya: Zohra is right! Let me enlighten you all with a few examples and things that would make the situation even better.

Kids hiding things from parents: Parents should be friends with their child. They should make the child trust them. Usually what happens is that kids become scared of their parents and in future don’t tell them things that are troubling them

Parents having unrealistic expectations: Our parents want the best for us but sometimes they end up pressurizing us. The solution to that is to talk with your parents, discuss your problems you are having with your studies. Maybe after talking with them they can adjust their expectations and support and encourage you.

Parents not letting you choose your career: Understand their expectations about you being in that specific career For example- Being an engineer. Talk about how you don’t have an interest in that and you want to fulfil your dreams. Reason with them and show how interested and knowledgeable you are in the career you want.

Teslim: Addition to those, Parents should let them explore everything and see what their passion is and give wings to their dreams so that they can be happy and their future will be happy too.

Princess: Lastly, there should always be a repo and bonding between both parents and children. This makes things simpler than making them complex. Try making yourself comfortable and try to share things with your parents, make them understand and have a great time with them.

Adiba: Thank you for listening to us! It's time for the Royal queens to take leave. But we won't let you miss us so much. We will be back really really soon. Have a great day and keep smiling. Just to tell you, your smile is your dangerous weapon.

Adiba runs behind Divya and clings to her while the others laugh. Riya sighs as she can finally get some sleep. Teslim, Zohra and princess have fun while pranking each other!

That's all for today!

Hope you liked the chapter!

Do share it with your friends if you find it helpful!

Thank you
