When she introduces herself as Mei, the first thing you notice about her is that— hey, you've actually noticed her a lot.

    Though unassuming, you'd never miss the pale pink cardigan fluttering around the campus, or the stupid laugh after the stupider puns, or the tiny, plush keychains hooked to her bag. 11:11 PM in the coffee shop line, and you try not to look at her when her friend asks for scissors, and she pulls out a knife, and you try, Lord knows you try, not to correct her when you overhear "herb" pronounced with a hard, hellish h. She's always got plastic stars or hearts in her ponytail, and around her tanned wrists too, clicking and clacking together when she doodles 3/4 headshots of some elf character during the lecture— she wears constellations on her ears, and if you stare reeeeaal hard past those thick lenses reflecting a tablet screen and the non-stop night, in her narrow, black eyes too. (oh how much clearer they are, when she cries, cries, and cries her whole heart out into souls she's never met and feelings she can't remember.)

So you notice you've noticed her, when you catch yourself saying, "that's a new hair tie," to the red, floral bow popping against black hair. And maybe's she's been watching you too, you realize, when Mei peers down, brightens, and yells "oh, new kicks!"
