Lily's First Sleepover
"Take care, Lily. And don't go out of the house, okay ?" Mom says, while I put on my shoes. I buckle the strap and look up at her.
"I'll be fine, mom. And, besides, Mrs. DiLaurentis would never let us out of the house." I say.
'But we'll be sneaking out anyway.'
"I know, dear. I'm only concerned." She says.
"I understand." I say, getting up. Not to sound girly, but I don't want my clothes getting dirty from sitting on the stairs.
"You just take care of yourself." She says. Now I can see a hint of a smile on her face.
"See you soon, mom !" I say as I run towards the elevator to go down where my dad is waiting in his car. As I reach for the calling button I hear my mother calling out,
"Have fun, dear !"
Later...
Kadienne's bedroom is small, but enough for the three of us. Mr and Mrs dilaurentis are very hospitable, too.
"Would you like some water ?"
"Do you want any snacks ?"
"Can we help you in any way ?"
"Shall I drop you at your homes tomorrow ?" (This one's from Mr. DiLaurentis)
Me and Ashleigh politely decline their offers. The three of us make small talk till they retire to bed. Kadienne suggests that we watch something, and we sit in front of her laptop to watch The Friendship Games.
Later....
" I'll never get sick of watching that." Ashleigh announces, sitting down on the bed.
"Who does ?" Kadienne asks, leaning against her closet. Ashleigh had made a few attempts to open it. Looks like Kad's not gonna allow it again.
"No one. Well, unless they watch it more than 50 times." I say. The songs are ringing in my head and I don't like it.
"So, what do we do now ?" I ask.
"It's almost midnight." Kadienne notes, looking at a clock.
"You know what that means." Ashleigh says, smirking. I smirk, too.
"Yes, I do." I reply. Kadienne shifts her gaze between me and Ashleigh and sighs.
"Right. Time to go to school." She says.
A Couple Of Minutes Later...
We quietly sneak out of the house, quiet as mimes, and Kadienne locks the door behind us. Hastily, the three of us put on our shoes and get down to the ground floor by the stairs. The watchman might get suspicious if we use the lift.
As I'm thinking how we can get past the front gate without alerting the watchman, we notice something. He is sleeping on a cot outside his cabin.
'Watchmen these days.. unreliable.' I think.
"We must jump over the wall." Kadienne whispers. "The gates are too creaky."
"I'll see if the coast is clear." Ashleigh says. She walks over to the wall and hoists herself up, then jumps over. A thud is heard, then silence. I look at the cabin. The watchman stirs and groans, but doesn't wake up.
Ashleigh gives a thumbs-up from the other side of the wall. I see only her hand, though.
Kadienne goes next and jumps. I can hear a "Ouch !" following the 'thud'. Panicked, I glance at the cabin. He stirs and groans more, and even mumbles something.
I must be careful. Else he'll wake up. And it'll be extra difficult for us to get back.
I walk over to the wall and hoist myself up, then sit on it and cross my legs to the other side. The pavement is lower than the ground floor of the building. I think about how I can get down as silently as possible. That'swhen I notice a part of the wall jutting out. I put my right leg on that part and carefully get down.
I turn to Ashleigh and Kadienne, who were watching me get down, and were making wild gestures to 'make it fast'.
"Let's go." Kadienne says, and we all walk towards the second gate of the school, the soles of our shoes slapping against the pavement. Our footsteps are the only sound as we make our way to the school building.
There is a security guard at the first gate, and the second one is usually left unguarded. But it's kept locked at night, so we'll have to jump over the fence... again.
This time, all three go at once. But it takes a minute or two, sincethis fence has curved, pointy metal ends.
"Finally." I say, as we look at the school - Or atleast, the part of it which we see from this angle.
I look back at the fence. While coming, I thought I saw someone cross the fence, like we did. It msut've been my imagination.
"Lily, you coming or not ?" Ashleigh asks. After a final glance at the fence, I join her and Kadienne, and the three of us make our way to one side of the row of buses. On the other side are some classrooms, which serve as 'homes' for some of the service staff.
Once we reach the other side of the ground, we climb a tiny flight of stairs, into the corridor. Then we go up a much larger flight of stair, which leads to the Estern wing, where the library is located.
We make sure that they're out of earshot, and then burst of fits of giggling.
"I can't believe we actually did it." Ash says, grinning.
"I've rarely been in the school when it's dark." Kad says, looking over her shoulder into the dark hallway.
"It's like 4th grade and Annual Day combined." I say slowly.
"4th grade ?" Ash asks and even though I can't see it, I know she's raising an eyebrow.
"My mom was a teacher." I say. "And so is Martin's mom. Teachers have to stay till 4 Pm, you know. (School ends at 3 Pm) So, till then, we used to play around in the school with other staff children. The school was totally empty except for us, and the staff."
"Well.. that's a nice story." Kadienne says. We stop at the library.
"Now what ?" I ask.
"Let's go see our future classroom." Ash says.
"Where do you think it is ?" Kad asks.
"My best bet : Top floor, Western wing." I say. And off we go.
The first classroom that greets us is 7-D.
Kadienne goes to the corner to have a look at the classroom there.
"It's 8-A." She says.
We cut into another corridor, and the first classroom there is 8-B. Next to this classroom are the restrooms. After passing those, there are three more classrooms. If 8-C and 8-D are there, there will be one classroom left. But... what for ?
I try not to think about it as I go in that direction with Ash and Kad.
"8-C" Ash says, reading the board beside the door of the classroom. "Which means..." She looks at the next room, and runs towards it. I quickly catch up, and am shocked to see that Ashleigh has a shocked expression on her face.
I follow her gaze, and see the board. 9-A.
"Shouldn't this be 8-D ?" Kadienne asks in a low voice.
"Something's wrong. Something is definitely-" Ashleigh starts, but I don't stay there to hear the end of it. The classes are shuffled. I just know it.
I stop at a list stuck up on the wall near 8-C; and search through the list.
Ashleigh.... Kadienne.... Martin... Peter.... Pearl.....
But my name is nowhere in this list.
I feel like screaming. Thrashing. Peeling off the list from the wall. But I don't. I go over to 8-B and search through the list again.
This time, I find my name.
"Guys." I say, a bit loud so Ashleigh and Kadienne can hear me. "We need to go. Now. I'll explain later."
