The Third Encounter
Lucy's POV:
"What do you need to do?" Saphira crosses her arms. I analyze the situation.
"Obviously this person is here for show. A guild can be wrecked a whole lot quieter. Judging from the explosions-" I pause as another one shook the air. "This person is expecting us. We should be prepared."
"They're powerful or prideful, if they want to attract the whole guild. That broken door is an open invitation." I pause. "Fly me up to the second level."
Even though I'd lost weight during my training, Saphira's wings still beat hard; she hasn't had to carry a person in a while. I take in my surroundings. The destruction on the first level is even more evident from an aerial perspective. No doubt the second level is next on the chopping block. Another deafening explosion vibrates through my body.
I peer through the second level window, scraping off some of the built up dirt obscuring my sight. Saphira alights next to me as my nail screeches on the glass, and I wince, freezing in place. I can barely make out the back of a familiar humanoid shape. With long black hair.
The figure stops, and for a second I forget how to breath. My anxiety holds my throat closed. If the figure turns around, I'll be in plain sight- helpless as a kitten. Every moment seems like forever as I hope to every star that please, please, don't turn around.
The figure resumes destruction, placing a hand on a table. A second passes, and I flinch as splinters hit the window, able to breathe again.
"Lucy..." Saphira presses herself against me, her now human hands tucked against her chest.
I place a reassuring hand on her head.
"It's okay. I'll win."
"No, not that..."
I follow her line of sigh. I can see Levy, Juvia, Elfman, and a few others heading this way, along with a few curious citizens. I look back at the entrance, and the first master holds my gaze. I don't recall Mavis appearing when we first surveyed the scene, but she nods, and I set my jaw. I have to face this myself.
"Are you sure you can do this?" Saphira's voice had a quiet intensity to it.
I nod, and step through the window.
Saphira closes it silently and flies away, presumably to warn my guildmates of the situation.
I gaze at the figure, noticing a freshly scarred back. It's an old rival. An even older friend for the guild. I watched the figure prepare to explode another table.
I meant to avoid the front door to gain the element of surprise. Instead, I was the one caught by surprise.
"Lisanna."
She lifts her gloved hand and turns, giving a wave and a crooked grin that doesn't touch her red eyes. Eyes are said to be the window to the soul, and hers are...
"Empty."
She's devoid of passion. And it honestly scares me. She looks like she's lost everything- or everything has been taken from her.
But how? How is she still here?
The guild mark on her shoulder has been replaced by a blackened, charred mark, covering the symbol entirely.
"What is that mark?"
Her wide eyes fix on me, her cracked lips twitching.
"I won, I won, I WON! I WON! I DESERVED to win! You come back, and you cheat! You steal Natsu from me! You...You ruined it all! You ruined me!"
Lisanna pounces, shrouded in a dark purple aura. I follow the instinct deep within me screaming of danger, and sidestep her intended bodyslam. She crashes through the window, and I almost pity her.
Almost.
I turn around and survey the damage done to the guild. She really had been destroying the place in the loudest, flashiest way possible. I hear a shouted, angry yell behind me and roll to my left.
Lisanna stands across from me, breathing heavily, her bare foot and elbow bleeding. Why is she walking around barefoot? The dark aura liquifies and becomes an ugly, pulsing mass. It pushes itself up against her collarbone and entered her body as if it were trying to attack her heart. She screams, hair-raising and ear-splitting, and purple liquid fires from all directions from her body. I raise my arm to protect my face, and my lightweight armor begins to melt away.
"What-what in the world happened to you?!" I shout, unease building beneath my skin. I rise from my knees and requip my armor before it can burn my skin.
"This is your fault! Your fault! If you hadn't stolen my Natsu, if you hadn't left me to die!"
She screams again, the purple aura expanding, and I pity her. She starts attacking again, her gloved forearms coated in purple liquid.
"You left me to die!"
Slowed by my racing thoughts, I can barely dodge her arms.
"You! You kicked me OUT! I wanted to use what I'd learned! I just wanted peace! I just wanted happiness! I just wanted to be loved for once in my LIFE!"
Her relentless barrage of attacks hits me in the chest, and I stumble backward, falling onto my rump. My armor doesn't melt, but it knocks the air from my lungs. She bends at the waist and stares me straight in the eyes, as if she's aware of the fresh guilt piercing my heart.
"You knew what it felt like to be exiled from the guild! You knew! You knew, and instead, you treated someone else the same way! What cowardly hypocrisy!"
I look away from her accusatory gaze. She presses her hand against my neck, my head cracking against the wall. "And then- And then you left me to him. You couldn't even finish me off. You left me to crawl back to Zeref, back to admit my failure, back to be punished."
She lifted her foot, showing me the bottom of it. My eyes widen. They're black, but not from accumulated dust and grunge.
"Forced to dance on hot coals! I'm not allowed to wear shoes for a year." She takes off her black gloves and displays her hands. She laughs as I cringe. "I had to do this to myself."
The top of her hands were charred black, branded with the same mark on her shoulder. Her palms and wrists were stained red with cuts imitating the decorations of Gothic architecture. Her whole mind and body must have been broken.
"You caused this. This, and the lashes across my back. I just wanted the power to make things go my way for once! Do you think the person I was would have wanted to kick you out? Do you think I would ever want to do this?"
She sobs. She places her other hand on my neck, and I struggle for air. Maybe I deserve this.
"Do you think I ever had a choice?"
Tears stream down her face, betraying her empty persona.
"I can't stop him. My life is ruined because of you."
I suck in a last bit of breath.
"Good-bye, Lucy."
Is this how I die?
