CHAPTER THREE

(sammi's outfit for this chapter)

Music was something Sammi and Lucas had in common. It was something they both could agree on that was good. Although they do sometimes argue which one has better music taste but it's all in good fun. Lucas for sure has the more musical talent than Sammi, well, in Sammi's opinion.

Sammi doesn't think she has that good of a singing voice and Lucas thought otherwise. Sammi actually does have a good singing voice, she's just insecure about it, and only sings with people she's close with. Not only does she have a good singing voice, but she is great with an acoustic guitar and songwriting. In her free time and when she's alone in her room she often plays her guitar and tries to write some songs in her journal she doesn't let anyone touch.

"I'm back!" Dave exclaimed, closing the door behind him as he walked inside.

"Hi." Lori greeted him from her place in the kitchen.

"I couldn't wait to get back home and work on the gazebo." Dave smiled, setting his jacket on the couch. Lori sent him a look of offense.

Sitting at the kitchen table across from Lucas, Sammi raises her eyebrows at him. "And to see your loved ones?"

Dave stops walking towards the door to outside and turns to face her, pointing at her in a sign of agreement. "Yeah, that too." He went over to Lori, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and kissed her cheek.

Lori smiles. "Oh, we both do class-up the place."

While Lori and Dave talk about how proud they are of their son for studying, Sammi put the earphone she had out back in since she only had one earphone in. She continued to listen to one of her Spotify playlists that were full of songs from the 'High School Musical' series. The 'High School Musical' series were one of her favorite Disney movies of all time. She would have to say that the second or third one was her favorite of the three movies.

She watched all three movies more than once and had even forced Lucas to join her on watching them. He said he didn't like the series and said he thought they were kids movies. (he just said that because he didn't want to made fun of for liking the series) When he thought she wasn't looking she noticed him humming along to some of the songs which made her smile. She knew he secretly liked the 'High School Musical' movies.

Sammi brought her attention away from the journal she was writing in (she was actually working on a new song she named 'Watch Me' since she had finished her homework for that week) when she saw pencils in front of her. She stops writing, glancing at Lucas with an annoyed expression to see he was still drumming with two pencils, headbanging, and looked like he was humming. He also had his eyes closed. In Sammi's opinion, he looked ridiculous.

He had been drumming with his eyes closed for the past hour. She got used to it, but when she thought he might stop he kept going. That had annoyed her so she put in earphones and listened to music to tune him out. Part of her wondered if he was only doing that to annoy her. Unbeknownst to her that was part of the reason he was doing what he's doing. He still found it a bit amusing when he annoyed her.

Sammi turned down her music when she saw Dave take a seat beside her left side, looking at Lucas with mild concern and glanced at her journal, drawing random shapes on the side of the paper in her journal she was writing on while taking sneaky glances at the parents and son. She wanted to listen in, but she didn't want it to be obvious she was listening in on their conversation.

"How's it going?" Dave questioned.

"Good." Lucas replied, continuing to use his pencils as drum sticks with his eyes closed and even continued headbanging.

Lori squints her eyes at him, leaning forward a bit. "Is it, though?"

Lucas nods. "Oh, yeah."

Having enough of his drumming, Lori reaches over to put her hands on top of his and stops him. He looks at her and she tilts her head to the side. "Is it?"

Lucas nods again, his lips forming into a smile. "Yeah. Hey, listen to this." He glances at one of the notebooks he has in front of him. Butterflies form in Sammi's stomach upon hearing his beautiful singing voice, she brought her gaze back down to her journal to hide the smile that formed on her lips. "Girl, you know my heart-"

"Lucas..." Dave stops him from continuing, causing Lucas to look at him with confusion. "If you wanna be a doctor, you really have to focus."

Sammi glances at Lucas, frowning at seeing the sadness that flashed in his eyes, his shoulders dropping in defeat. She hated seeing him upset. "What about flashcards?" Lori questioned, not observing her son's change of demeanor.

She glanced at Dave and Sammi with a smile, figuring that Sammi was listening in on their conversation now since she noticed the young adult looking at them. Sammi sent a sheepish smile to Lori when they locked eyes with each other and Lori shook her head, letting her know it wasn't a big deal.

"You know," Lori smiles proudly, putting a hand on her hip. "In high school, they used to call me Grandmaster Flashcard."

Lucas shakes his head, furrowing his eyebrows. He glances at Sammi, and she looks at him, chuckling lightly upon seeing the confused look he sent her. "You know what that means?"

"Nope." Sammi responded, shaking her head.

Lucas slowly nods. A closed lipped smile was on his lips while glancing at his parents with confusion. "I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what it means."

"Great idea." Dave commented to Lori, looking at her with a smile and she smiled back at him.

"Yeah," Lori pats her husband's shoulder. "I'll go grab the markers."

"Oh!" Dave stands up, pointing at her as she was beginning to leave the dining area. "I'll change and meet you back here." Lori walked into another room while Dave walked towards the stairs.

"Grandmaster Flashcard and DJ Memorizer in da, in da, in da house." Dave mimics the sound of a record scratch at the end of his sentence, pretending to be as if he was a DJ. He pointed at the two young adults, looking at them with a smile and then went up the stairs.

Lucas puts his hands on his forehead and rubs his temple with an annoyed expression on his face already. He looks at Sammi with a pleading expression. "Help me, please." He didn't want to have to deal with his parents trying to help him study for who knows how long. He loved them to death, but sometimes they're both just too much to handle, and he didn't have the heart to tell them that he doesn't need or want their help.

"Wait a second, do my ears deceive me?" Sammi takes her earbuds out of her ears, pretending to look shocked. "You actually asking me for help. Wow, I never thought this day would come."

Lucas rolls his eyes playfully. "Stop being dramatic and just help me figure out what to do so I'm not dealing with," He speaks the names with annoyance lacing his voice. "Grandmaster Flashcard and DJ Memorizer helping me study for the rest of the day." He shudders, shaking his head. "Oh, what a nightmare that would be."

"Oh, come on." Sammi laughs. "They're not that bad."

"Okay, so they aren't that bad, but they aren't that good either." Lucas sighs. "Please, just tell me what I do. I don't want them to help me study, but I don't want to hurt their feelings. " He shakes his head. "They seem really excited to help me with this for some reason."

"Just tell them the truth." Sammi shrugged.

She remembered the countless of times her parents had helped her study when she was in high school. She often got annoyed with them like how Lucas is with his parents at the moment. She eventually got to the point where she found her own tactic that helped her learn what she studied and told her parents that she could study on her own. If she ever needed help, she would tell them, and they respected that and were also proud of her for figuring stuff on her own.

Lucas purses his lips together. "Yeah, I feel like that wouldn't go well if I tried that so I'm probably just gonna let them help me."

Sammi nods, not surprised by his answer and went to go back to continue the song she was working on but stops and glances back at Lucas. "There is actually something I've been meaning to ask you. Do you even want to be a doctor anymore? 'Cause lately it seems like you've been liking music and focusing on music a lot more than studying to be a doctor and stuff."

Today wasn't the first day she saw Lucas randomly humming or singing lyrics he made up. She knew music was something he loved and he even said when he was younger, he wanted to be a famous musician one day. She wondered if that was still his dream. Lucas is quiet for a moment, aimlessly staring at one of his notebooks, his eyebrows furrowed together. Sammi could almost see the wheels turning his mind though she had no clue as to what he was thinking.

"Don't get me wrong, I love music. And I would love to be a musician, but I do wanna still be a doctor." Lucas admits. He glances at her, looking at her with a small smile as he shrugs. "I just wanna help people like the way the doctors helped my sister."

That's one of the reasons why she likes him. Because of how caring, helpful, and thoughtful he is. Sammi smiles softly at him and nods. "Okay." The two share a smile and stare at each other probably longer than they should. Sammi was the one to break eye contact, clearing her throat as she turns her gaze back to her journal. "Oh, um, I also liked what you were singing. It sounded good."

Lucas' eyes lit up and a smile tugs on his lips. "Thanks, Samshine."

"Yeah," Sammi smiles shyly. "You're welcome." She kept her gaze on her journal, glad that some of her brunette hair fell in front of her face because she felt her face heat up at hearing the nickname only Lucas called her.

He first called her that nickname when they were in the fourth grade. It was when she was just learning how to play basketball and Lucas was teaching her what he knew. She had just made her first ever three pointer. He said, 'And the crowd goes wild'. He had mimicked the sound of a cheering crowd and smiled when she laughed.

He then said to her, 'that was so cool, samshine'. She remembered being confused at the random nickname and then really happy (it also made her blush but she made sure to look down so her hair would fall in front of her face to hide her blush. yes, it worked, he only saw her smile which made him smile) after he explained the reasoning for him calling her that. 'it's sunshine and your name put together. you remind me of sunshine because of how you just have this way of always knowing how to make others happy and you just brighten up the room when you walk in somehow. so i thought it would be a perfect nickname'.

"Lucas, you know this one." Lori spoke to her son, showing him one of the flashcards she and Dave made. She sat on the couch in the living room in front of Lucas, her husband sitting on a nearby chair and Sammi now sat on the chair across from Dave, scrolling through social media on her phone.

Sammi raised her eyebrows and she glanced at the boy sitting on the couch when he started humming. She noticed that the couple shared a look, and she couldn't tell whether they looked annoyed or concerned for Lucas. Maybe both. Lucas' humming continued as he moved along to the rhythm of the song he made up that he was humming.

"It's 'left ventricle'!" Dave shouts, startling both Lucas and Sammi. Sammi glances at him, seeing he had a look of frustration on his face. He points at Lucas. "We've been working on these all afternoon!"

Sammi shared a look with Lucas as Dave got up and moved to where the dining table is at, turning to lean his arms on the table on one of the chairs. Lucas looks at his mom , shaking his head. "This is not how my brain works."

"Okay," Lori nods. "I think we're all a little frustrated." She sighs, standing up. "Why don't we take a five?" She chuckled and went over to the kitchen island where Dave joined her.

Sammi turns off her phone, glancing at Lucas to see he was looking at the textbook in front of him. "Just study the way your brain works to make it easier for you. Like, don't you have a way you study easy?" She tilts her head to the side, nodding to herself when she remembers what he did when he was studying for a class. "Yeah, you make up a song."

Lucas looks at her with a bit of surprise, not thinking she would remember or know that he did that. The fact that she did made him smile. "Yeah, um, I do."

"I assume that was what you were humming earlier and if it is and you still remember it then I think it's a good tactic for you to use since it's helping you remember all of your terms and other doctor stuff. So keep on doing what you're doing when you study." Sammi told him, sending him a smile. She didn't want him to use a way to study that doesn't help him or that he's not used to using. If he had his own way of studying and it helped him learn and remember what he's learning then she thought it was a good idea.

A smile tugs on Lucas' lips, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, okay." So he goes through the song he made up to help him remember what he's studying. "Girl, you know my heart,"

"We lost him." Dave sighed when he heard Lucas singing. His wife nodded in agreement.

"Is a very important part of my cardiovascular system." His parents turned to face him with surprise expressions. Sammi sent him an encouraging smile when he looks at her almost as if he was nervous to continue. He was nervous because he wasn't for sure if this song sounded good. It sounded good to him, but it might not to others.

After seeing Sammi's smile he felt more confident about it. He smiles and nods. "Yeah, and I'll never wrestle with my love of blood vessels. They pump my blood so don't dismiss 'em."

As he raps the next part of his song his parents started to slowly walk around the kitchen island, stopping when they were standing by the end of the kitchen island, still looking at him with surprise. "Yeah, arteries carry blood from my heart. Veins carry back so our love can start. The aorta is the body's trunk. It's the main artery that controls my funk."

Sammi grins while watching him, honestly thinking that his song was really good. Dave turns to Lori with wide eyes, gesturing to their son. "Are you hearing this?"

Lori points at Lucas. "He knows every term." She glances at him with a smile. "Do you realize what this means?"

"We did it." Dave smiles and chuckles in disbelief along with Lori. They high five each other with Lori agreeing, "Yeah, we did it."

Sammi glances over at the side door when it opens, smiling upon seeing Jennifer. "Hi, Jennifer!"

Jennifer sends her a smile as she closes the door. She looks at everyone with a smile and waves. "Hello, friends." She turned to Dave and Lori, asking if they could watch Jack tomorrow night since she has a date. She admitted she didn't feel ready after Lori asked if she was and added that she had to pay for the app so now she has to actually use it. Dave and Lori suggested on helping her prep for the date.

****

Sammi had got her earphones from the dining table she left them on and plugged them into her phone, deciding on watching a movie. Dave and Lori were still helping Jennifer with prepping for her date tomorrow night and Lucas was still working on his song that helped him to study. The Australian girl curled up on the chair she had been sitting on for most of the day, going to Disney +, and to her account. She decided on watching each 'High School Musical' movies since listening to her Spotify playlist earlier got her in the mood to watch the movies.

Just before as the opening credits ended, Sammi noticed that Alexa arrived at home. The teen looked confused as she looked at her dad and Jennifer sitting across from each other at the dining table. A small chuckle escapes her lips. The situation was probably confusing without knowing any of the context.

Alexa walked into the living room area, locking eyes with Sammi. She smiled at the blonde-haired girl and Sammi returned the smile. When she realized that Alexa was talking to her, she pauses the movie and looks at her with confusion. "Sorry, what did you say?"

"What's going on here?" Alexa questioned, gesturing to her parents and Jennifer.

Sammi went to open her mouth to reply but Lucas sings before she could speak. "And I'll never wrestle with my love of blood vessels." Hearing that caused Alexa to look at her brother weirdly.

Sammi chuckles and shakes her head. "Dave and Lori are helping Jennifer prepare for her date tomorrow night. And Lucas is musically studying."

Alexa purses her lips together and slowly nods. "Alright, then." She went upstairs and Sammi turns her attention back to her phone, pressing play on the movie.

She wasn't even that far into the movie when she noticed Lucas had stood up which confused her. She pauses the movie, curious as to what he was doing. That's when she saw Alexa had walked back down the stairs, carrying a jacket. "The aorta is the body's trunk."

"It's the main artery that controls my funk." He sung the word 'funk' in a high note, raising his arms dramatically which made Sammi laugh a bit and Alexa look at him weirdly again.

Lucas glances at Sammi when he heard her laugh and smirks. "That was good, wasn't it?"

"I don't know about good, but it was sure entertaining to watch." Sammi chuckled. Lucas rolled his eyes playfully and grabbed one of the pillows on the couch, throwing it at her. Sammi laughed again as she quickly set her phone in her lap to catch the pillow.

Alexa smiled a bit as she watched the two interact and continued walking to the side door. She was confused at seeing her mom now sitting in front of Jennifer and was even more confused at hearing what they were talking about.

"You know," Lori reaches forward to put her hand on Jennifer's. "You look way too young to have kids."

Jennifer smiles and shakes her head. "I don't have kids." Alexa looked at her weirdly and shook her head before she left.

"What movie are you watching?" Lucas asked Sammi, noticing she was watching a movie. He just couldn't tell what one.

"First movie of the 'High School Musical' series." Sammi replies, tilting her head to the side when she saw the hint of a excited smile on his lips before he looked down. "Why? You wanna watch it with me?"

"No." Lucas scoffs, shaking his head as he sits back down on the couch. "Those movies are for kids."

A chuckle left Sammi's lips. "You wanna watch it, don't you?"

Nodding, Lucas looks up from the ground and over at her with a smile. "Yeah."

"Okay." Sammi smiled.

She gets up from the chair, setting the pillow down. She sits down on the couch beside Lucas, handing Lucas the other earphone. Lucas takes it from her, sending her a smile and puts it in his ear as Sammi presses play on the movie. Sammi grabbed a nearby pillow, setting it on her lap and rests her arm on it so it doesn't get tired while she held her phone. She made it where that they could both see the screen easily and when she leaned her head on his shoulder he couldn't help but smile.

A/N honestly though lucas' song in this episode is so good ! yes lucas & sammi are still frenemies but you can tell they're getting closer to be friends or something more as time goes on :)
