CHAPTER TEN

(sammi's outfit for this chapter with black vans)

Lori was putting on a fundraiser for Stand Up to Cancer and everyone was helping her get ready for it. Currently, Alexa, Dave, Lucas, and Sammi were in the kitchen getting the gift bags ready.

"Okay, done sending the e-blast for the fundraiser." Katie explained when she walked into the kitchen by using the side door.

"Hey." Alexa greeted.

"Hi, Katie." Sammi smiles at the blonde-haired girl. "That's great."

"The K and C keys on my laptop are stuck, so I had to sign it 'Atie Ooper'." Katie added with a grimaced expression on her face.

"Aw, don't worry, Atie. It's the thought that counts." Dave remarked. Katie shook her head and playfully rolled her eyes again.

"I'm sorry about your laptop and my dad's joke." Alexa apologizes. After she paused for a few seconds, she then adds, "Mostly my dad's joke."

"So, how are the gift bags coming?" Katie asked.

"The trick is to not overwork the tissue, you know." Lucas replied.

"Yeah, for some reason he gets upset when they're messed up even just a bit." Sammi said, teasingly smiling at Lucas.

"They look bad if they're too much." Lucas defended himself. Sammi chuckled, rolling her eyes as she playfully nudged him. He smiled, playfully nudging her back.

Lucas then glances at his left wrist with furrowed eyebrows. "Oh, no." He starts looking at all the gift bags with wide eyes. "My watch."

A look of annoyance forms on Sammi's face and her shoulders drop in defeat. "Babe, please tell me you didn't accidentally pack your watch in one of the gift bags."

Lucas sheepishly smiles at her, ignoring the way his heart fluttered upon hearing her call him a term of endearment. "Okay, I won't tell you."

Sammi sighs heavily. "Alright, let's start looking for it." She said began to help him look for his watch, smiling slightly when he kissed her on the cheek.

"Oh, hey!" Lori greets everyone while walking into the kitchen. "Come on. I finally finished the layout for the fundraiser."

While Dave, Alexa and Katie joined Lori at the table, Sammi stayed with Lucas at the kitchen island to help him look for his watch. Sammi wasn't surprised Lucas lost his watch she just wished he didn't lose it as they were getting the gift bags ready because now they have to go through them all.

After Lori explained to everyone where everything was going to go for this event, Katie said she needed to go clean her Wired's apron so she left. "Hey, listen," Lori said to everyone and that's when Lucas and Sammi decide to stop looking for his watch to join Alexa, Dave, and Lori at the table. "Thanks again for helping out with this event."

"It's not a problem." Sammi reassures her. "I love you guys and I love helping people. I know this fundraiser is going to be a big hit."

Lori smiles at her. "Thanks, Sammi."

"I've been looking for a way to help people since I quit pre-med." Lucas admits. "And you know how my knitting with the elderly thing went sideways."

Everyone nods in agreement. "Oh, boy." Dave said with a grimaced expression on his face.

"Mrs. Wordham will never be the same." Alexa spoke.

"It was really bad, wasn't it?" Lori questioned.

"Very bad." Sammi replied, following Lucas back over to the kitchen island to resume looking for his watch.

"Hey, honey, listen. Um..." Lori smiles at her daughter. "Look, I'm really happy you agreed to speak. One of the best things you can do for these charities is having a survivor share their personal experience, and it means a lot to me that you're willing to share yours."

"Well, Spencer has given me a new perspective on dealing with cancer." Alexa admitted.

"Is he still able to come?" Lori inquired.

"Yeah," Alexa smiles. "He's coming straight from his game. He's gonna be a little late." She chuckles. "And maybe a little stinky. I hope he showers."

Lori then asked Alexa how her speech was coming along and when Alexa said it was going well, Sammi looks at Alexa with disbelief. She knew for a fact Alexa hasn't even started on her speech yet. She just hoped that Alexa would work on it soon before the fundraiser started. Sammi smiled when Lori gave Alexa a notebook for her to use with working on her speech and thought that was sweet of Lori.

After Alexa found out about the mini basketball booth, she said that's where she was going to be spending her time and she challenged her dad to a friendly competition. Sammi was surprised to hear that Dave scored twenty-seven baskets in a row on a mini basketball booth. She thought he wasn't that good at it. She chuckled, smiling with amusement at the deal Alexa and her dad made. If Alexa won she got to drive Dave's car for a month, but if Dave won she had to wash his car for a month.

"Wait," Sammi looks up from the mess she and Lucas had made when they were searching for his watch. Lucas chuckles. "I wasn't wearing a watch."

Sammi sits the bag she held on the kitchen island, looking at him with a glare. "You've got to be kidding me."

Everyone else looks at Lucas with disbelief and he sheepishly starts to put things back in the gift bags. "You're lucky you're cute." Sammi sighed, patting his shoulder and helped him clean up the mess they both made.

****

There were twenty more minutes before the fundraiser started. Sammi and Lucas were in charge of being at the check in desk. Meaning that they had to check people into the event and give out the gift bags. For this event the new couple had decided on color coordinating with their outfits and Sammi thought they looked pretty cute. Lucas wore a red button up shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes.

(this is the what sammi looks like for the rest of the chapter)

Sammi wore a sparkly top, blue jeans with floral prints covering parts of the jeans, a red leather jacket, a red floral necklace, and ankle high black boots. Sammi did her makeup and after having a mental debate with herself on what style she should do her hair she decided on going with two space buns while the rest of her hair is down.

Sammi was actually doing work while Lucas had been humming to himself for the past few minutes. Every once in a while, Sammi would smile at him with amusement. She always wondered why he stopped playing music. She knew he loved it and plus he was really good at it.

Sammi didn't even realize Lori was standing nearby until she heard Lori ask, "Does anyone else hear that humming?"

"It's just Lucas." Sammi spoke up, causing Lori to look over at her and Lucas.

Lori looks at her son and nods in realization. "Okay, that makes sense."

Alexa walks over to Lori with a smile. "Mom, this event is amazing. I didn't know a tent could look this good."

"She's right." Sammi agrees. "You did an awesome job with setting up this place."

"Thanks, guys." Lori smiles at the two girls. "I didn't know a tent could look this good either. I mean, I would go camping if all tents came with chefs and flattering lighting."

"Yeah, same." Sammi chuckled.

"Ah, I have a couple minutes if you wanna go over your speech." Lori said to Alexa.

Alexa waves a dismissive hand. "Oh, I'll be fine. You know, it's my story. I know it well. I'm gonna go look around a little bit."

"Okay." Lori nodded.

Alexa looks at Sammi with a smile. "Sammi, wanna join?"

"Sure." Sammi stands up, glancing at her boyfriend with a grimaced expression. "Wait." By now, Lucas had stopped humming and was actually making sure they had everything ready with the bags. "Lucas, will you be fine alone here for a few minutes?"

"Samshine, I'm fine." Lucas chuckles. "Go have fun."

"Okay." Sammi smiled and kissed his cheek before she walked over to Alexa.

Alexa smiles at her, linking their arms together. "We should go check out the carnival games and see what one I can beat you at."

"More like what one I'll beat you at." Sammi corrected her, causing Alexa to playfully look offended. They both shared a laugh and walked outside to where the carnival games were at.

****

After looking at some of the carnival games, Alexa and Sammi decided on checking at where Wired's cart was so they could talk with Katie.

"Hi, Katie." Sammi greeted and Alexa smiled and waved at her and Alexa.

"Hey, Wired's 2.0." Alexa smiled, gesturing to the cart.

"Oh!" Katie smiles excitedly, pointing at herself. "That's what I said."

Alexa puts her notebook in the drawer of the table across from the cart. Katie and Sammi exchange a confused glance and they both look at Alexa. "Don't you, uh, need that for your speech?"

"Oh, wait, you haven't written anything in it yet, have you?" Sammi realized.

"Of course I have." Alexa chuckles, but in Sammi's opinion it sounded like a nervous chuckle which caused her to stare at her suspiciously. "And my speech isn't for a couple hours so Sammi and I have plenty of time to win you a laptop."

Katie looks at the two girls with disbelief. "What?"

Sammi smiles at the blonde. "Yeah, we knew you needed a new one so we decided that we're gonna try to win you the laptop that's one of the raffle prizes."

Alexa nods. "So, all the tickets we win are going straight into the bowl for the laptop. And with any luck, Atie, you'll be able to turn that 'Ooper' back into a 'Cooper'."

Katie smiles softly, thinking it was sweet of the two girls to do this for her. She chuckles lightly, holding onto their hands. "Wow, that would be amazing."

****

Sammi went back to the check in desk and thankfully Lucas was still doing good. She knew he would be fine alone, but you can never be too sure with him. "Hey, everything still looks good!" Sammi cheered, sitting back down beside her boyfriend.

Lucas tilts his head to the side, looking at her with offense. "Of course it is."

"I never doubted you at all." Sammi lies and Lucas raises his eyebrows at her in disbelief. Sammi apologetically smiles. "Okay, maybe once."

Lucas chuckles, rolling his eyes. "Okay, whatever." He said dramatically, earning a small giggle from Sammi which made him smile. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get back to humming."

Lori walks by again and speaks into her earpiece to her team who had been helping her with setting up this event. Everyone who was helping set up this event wore an earpiece so they could easily converse with each other. "Hey, guys, I'm still hearing that humming."

When Lucas hums a high note, Lori turns around to look at him with raised eyebrows. Lori walks over to the check in table, looking at Sammi, who had an amused look on her face "Has he been doing this the whole time?"

"Basically..." Sammi pretends to think, then she nods as she chuckles. "Yeah."

Lori glances at Lucas with an annoyed smile. "Hey, uh, honey?" Lucas stops humming and looks at her. "You left talk button open. Everybody can hear you humming."

Lucas' eyes widen. "Oh, no. So, everyone heard me hum the love song I made for Sammi?"

Sammi's face heats up when he said that and her heartbeat increased. "That's what you were humming earlier?" She shakes her head as a smile made its way to her face. "And wait, you-you wrote me a love song?" She stammered out a question, surprised and flustered because of the fact he wrote her a love song.

Lucas freezes, just then realizing Sammi was sitting beside him. He guessed he was too focused on humming that he forgot she was beside him. "What love song?" He nervously chuckles, his face turning a bright pink. "I-I didn't say anything." He looks at his mom with panic. "How do I turn off the talk button?"

Lori chuckles and leans over to press the off button on his earpiece. "I'm just gonna focus on checking people in." Lucas decided and looked at the clipboard in front of him.

Lori smiles, pointing at him. "Good idea."

Sammi would focus on checking people in too, but now she was too busy thinking about the love song Lucas possibly wrote for her. She never thought that she would be dating Lucas yet she glad she was because she couldn't picture herself with anyone else. They both have been dating for a couple months now, but the fact Lucas possibly wrote her a love song made her so happy and giddy inside.

Dave walks inside, setting a box of gift bags on the table. "That's  the last of 'em." He smiles at Lori. "You've really outdone yourself. It's even better than our wedding." An offended look appears on Lori's face when he said the last part. After seeing that look, Dave nervously adds, "Not better, more...Impressive." He cringes. "Nope, that's not it."

Lori rubs his back to comfort him. "It's okay, honey." She chuckles. "Thank you."

****

Sammi went to go play some carnival games to win some tickets to help Katie get the laptop from the raffle. After she was done, she joined Alexa and Katie at the Wired's cart. She overheard that Katie was talking about how she wasn't expecting to like Aiden the way she does.

"I don't really know much of your relationship with him, but from what I see of you guys together it's pretty obvious you like him." Sammi chimed in, earning a surprised look from Katie.

Alexa nods in agreement. "Yeah, I've been expecting it for a while."

Katie groans. "Now I feel ridiculous."

"Hey, you are not ridiculous." Alexa tells her, gesturing to Aiden to was playing Skee-Ball. "He's ridiculous. And forget about him." She smiles. "You wanna hear some good news? After kicking my dad's butt," She gets out the tickets she won out of her back pocket. "We won you these."

"I also won you these." Sammi added, holding out the tickets she won to Katie.

Katie gasps and smiles at Alexa and Sammi, taking the tickets from them. "I just wish it was more." Alexa said.

Sammi nods in agreement. "Yeah, we really want you to win that laptop."

Katie puts the tickets in her pocket, shaking her head. "Are you kidding me?" She opens her arms for a hug. "Come here." She pulls the two girls in for a group hug. "You guys are the best." after they pull away from the hug, Katie looks at Alexa nervously. "I just hope you didn't spend too much time winning me raffle tickets that you didn't get to work on your speech." She got Alexa's notebook out of the drawer of the table Alexa put it in.

"Oh, I don't need to work on it." Alexa shakes her head, taking her notebook from Katie. "So why don't you go win your laptop," She gestures to herself and Sammi. "And we both will see you inside."

"Okay." Katie takes her apron off, laying it on the cart. She smiles at Alexa. "You're gonna do so great, okay?" She flips the open sign on the cart to closed. "I'm so proud of you."

When she walked away, Alexa opens her notebook and flips through it with a nervous expression on her face. Sammi sympathetically smiles at her. "You haven't started on your speech yet, have you?"

"Nope." Alexa replied.

Sammi wraps her arm around Alexa's shoulders to comfort her and Alexa leans her head on Sammi's shoulder. "What am I gonna do, Sam?" Alexa wondered out loud.

"I don't know, Lex." Sammi responds, leaning her head on top of Alexa's. "Just..." She's quiet for a few moments, trying to figure out what to say since she honestly didn't know how to help Alexa with this. She couldn't tell Alexa how to write her speech because it's supposed to be about Alexa's story. "Talk about your journey you went through with cancer. And when in doubt, go with what your heart is telling you to say."

Alexa smiles softly. "Thanks, Sammi. You're the best."

"Yeah, I know." Sammi grinned and the two girls laughed.

****

Since the magician (who was going to entertain the kids) couldn't show up, Dave offered to fill in and be entertainment with telling his jokes. Sammi only hoped that he would actually be good because the jokes she heard from him weren't exactly the best. She honestly thought of maybe preforming something to entertain the kids, but she decided against it since she was still nervous to sing in front of anyone.

Sammi stood off to the side beside Lucas, watching Dave try to entertain the kids. Dave pulled one of the chairs from a nearby table and sat on it backwards.

"So, I'm a pilot." Dave chuckles. "And I know that sounds like an exciting job, but sometimes it can be a little, uh," He smiles. "Plane." He looked around with a smile, waiting for someone to laugh at his oke, but no one did.

"Oh, okay. Uh, that one didn't take off, but I promise on this next one, I'll stick the landing." Dave grinned.

Sammi facepalms. "Oh my gosh. This isn't good."

"Don't worry, I got a plan." Lucas reassured her and walked on stage.

"Okay, uh...Not a fan of jokes." Dave notices as Lucas picks up an acoustic guitar that was on the stage. "Uh, let's get to know each other." He smiles at a young girl sitting at one of the tables up front. "Hi, what's your name?"

"Jill." The brunette-haired girl replied.

"Where are you from, Jill?" Dave asked.

"Where's the magician?" Jill questioned.

Dave scoffs. He smirks, pointing at himself. "Who needs a magician when you got a funny pilot?" He laughed, but once again no one laughed.

Lucas steps off the stage, smiling at the kids. "Hey, guys. I'm Lucas." Dave gets the hint and stood up, taking the chair with him as he walks to the side to put the chair away. "Um, I'm not a magician, but how about a song?" Lucas inquired. The kids smiled at him in response, and he smiled, sitting on the edge of the stage as he got ready to play the acoustic guitar.

"Okay, uh, so, I wrote this for my little sister." Lucas explained before he began to play and sing.

"Sometimes, I feel a little small. Will I measure up, will I stand tall? I've outgrown everything I own. And there's a big, big world out there. I don't know which road you'll take to find your fairy tale. I don't know what friends you'll make along this winding trail. And I don't know how far the sea will sail along for you. But I do know I'm all in for you. I'm all in for you."

Sammi looked at him with adoration and smiled softly. She thought it was so sweet he wrote that song for Alexa. Him singing that song he wrote for his sister showed just how much he cared about her.

The whole room erupted into applause for Lucas and he smiled as he stood up. A little boy who had been sitting at the front table got up and hugged Lucas. Lucas, of course, hugged him back and smiled.

"Thank you." Lucas said to everyone. He walks over to the side where his girlfriend and now his parents also stood. He and his dad did a bro hug. "You were amazing." Dave complimented.

Lucas looks at his girlfriend parents with a smile and shrugs. "I forgot how much I missed singing."

"Honey, that was so beautiful. Thank you." Lori said and hugged him.

"Babe," Sammi stands beside him, wrapping her arm around his waist while smiling widely at him. "That was incredible."

"Thanks, Samshine." Lucas smiled brightly at her. He kissed the top of her head and then wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

"That was the first time I did something right tonight." Lucas admits. He shrugs. "I just wanted to find a way to help people."

Dave nods, patting his shoulder. He smiles proudly. "I think you did."

Jennifer walks by them, holding a plate of shrimp. "That was such a great song, Lucas." She compliments and takes a bite of the shrimp she held. "Hm. It was beautiful."

"Wait..." Sammi's voice trailed off as she furrowed her eyebrows with confusion. She thought that the Cooper's were allergic to shellfish.

"Should she be eating shellfish?" Lucas asked his parents, looking at them with confusion and worry. Lori shrugged in response.

****

Now it was time for Alexa to give her speech. Sammi sat at a table with the Mendoza's and the Cooper's towards the back. Sammi hoped that Alexa would be okay with presenting her speech and that she knew what to say. She knew that Alexa didn't have anything written down and that Alexa was nervous for this. But she also knew that Alexa could overcome that and do great at telling her story to everyone.

Lori eventually walks on stage and stands at the podium. The conversation in the room grew quiet as she begins to speak. "Hello, I'm Lori Mendoza, the organizer for tonight's fundraiser benefiting Stand Up to Cancer." Everyone applaused and cheered.

"Hey, Mr. Mendoza."

Sammi glances over when she heard Spencer and she smiled, happy that he made it to the fundraiser. "Hey," Dave said to Spencer with a smile as Spencer sat beside him. "You're just in time."

"I, uh...I jumped at the chance to plan this fundraiser because it's a cause that's very near and dear to my family. I am a mother of a cancer survivor," Lori smiles. "And..." Her eyes start to get watery and her voice was even shaky the more she continues. "I've been trying to...Think of how to describe what that experience has been like. And...The only word I could come up with is...'Unimaginable'."

Sammi could feel tears brimming her eyes upon listening to Lori speak. She agreed with Lori. Being a friend to someone who once had cancer is unimaginable. She could never imagine what Alexa went through. She could just be thankful and grateful that Alexa is still alive.

"When I look back, I, um...You know, I had days where I was scared. I had days when I was mad." Lori continues. "I thought maybe I couldn't even be strong enough for my daughter...Or for myself" She confesses. "But whatever I was feeling, it was only a fraction of what my daughter was going through." By this point she was having trouble with trying not to cry (tears of joy, of course). Lori points at Alexa, who stood off to the side. "My daughter is here tonight," She smiles widely, pointing at herself. "And I could not be more grateful."

Everyone applauses. "So," Lori said after the applause dies down. "I stand up to cancer," She glances at Alexa with a smile. "For my daughter Alexa."

Dave stands up with a smile on his face. "I stand up to cancer so that other families won't have to go through what we did."

Lucas stands up next. "For my sister, for my parents..." He smiles. "I stand up to cancer.

"I stand up to cancer for one of my best friends and someone who is like a little sister to me." Sammi explained as she stood up, smiling at Alexa with tears in her eyes.

Katie is the next one to stand up. "I stand up to cancer because..." She clears her throat and with teary eyes she continues. "No one should ever have to think about losing their best friend."

Then Jennifer and Jack stand up. "We stand up to cancer for the entire Mendoza family." Jennifer said as she smiled.

Alexa walks on stage, standing beside her mom. "Hey, mom." She smiles a bit. "Um, if it's okay, I'd like to say something."

"Yeah." Lori smiled, picking up her hand to kiss the back of it before she walked off stage.

Alexa smiles and stands in front of the podium, facing everyone. "Hi, I'm Alexa. I was supposed to speak tonight, but I couldn't." She admits, shaking her head. "Until I realized...That having cancer isn't just about me. It affects everyone in my life, especially my family and my friends, who stood up for me when I couldn't stand up for myself." Everyone applauded her for her heartfelt speech.

Lori walks back on stage and side hugs Alexa. Lori then speaks into the microphone. "I would like to invite anyone else who...Would like to stand up against this terrible disease."

Spencer stands up and smiles. "I stand up to cancer so one day every cancer patient can become a cancer survivor."

More and more people began to stand up, explaining why they would like to stand up to cancer. This night meant a lot to everyone. It was a night was about remembering those who died of cancer and standing up to cancer for loved ones.

A/N lucas & sammi are adorable, i seriously love them so much ! this episode was so good, i loved it. honestly this show was such a good show
