That Truck Will Be Sitting in Our Barn

I grabbed a broom and started to sweep all the screws, nails, and small car parts into a pile, actually finding my old necklace in that pile, along with Tessa's missing earring.

"Finding some treasures in that pile, Bell?" Uncle Cade asked when he saw me picking through the dirty clumps.

"I found Tessa's earring, and my necklace." I told him, holding the jewelry up. I shoved them in my pocket, making a mental note to myself to give the earring to Tessa later.

I swept the rest of the dusty pile into the dust pan and tossed it in the trash. Uncle Cade was digging through his tool box, clearly looking for something.

"You missing something, Uncle Cade?" I asked.

"Yeah, my pocket knife." He said.

"Wouldn't it be in your pocket?"

"Checked them all three times, maybe I left it in here."

He rummaged through the box for a few minutes, then slammed it shut.

"Not in there," He said to himself. "You seen it anywhere, Hannah?"

"Is it the blue one?" I asked.

"Yeah."

"No, I haven't."

"Dang it."

I just shrugged and put my ear buds in, the music blaring.

'How can you see into my eyes, like open doors? Leading you down into my core, where I've become so numb...'

Evanescence. The only we'll actually listen to from them, the others were a disappointment.

Skip!

' I'm waking up to ash and dust. I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust. I'm breathing in the chemicals...'

'That's better.'

'I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out of the prison bars, this is in the Apocalypse, wa-oh...'

"Found it!" Uncle Cade exclaimed, holding up his pocket knife like he was holding that torch the Statue of Liberty holds.

I had just finished sweeping up the barn floor, dumping the last of the dirt and old bent nails and screws into the trash bin.

"Barn's all clean!" I said happily.

"Great!" Uncle Cade returned the happiness. "As of tomorrow, that truck will be sitting in our barn, and we'll try to make as much as we can off of it."

"What are you gonna tell Tessa when it gets here?"

The expression changed on his face.

"I don't know, maybe if we get lucky she'll be running around with her friends again."

I rolled my eyes. That's what we need, because Tessa will freak if she sees that truck come up.

We better hope for the best.
