The Cryo pods opened up in an instant for us, but it had been over five hundred years since we'd left Hyrriah. Our Pilot, Zrrayx Draeia was the first of us to wake, I was next, and one by one, the rest of us woke. We rushed as quickly as we could to get into our uniforms to stop our shivering from the Ark Vessels freezing temperature.
Draeia was a friendly woman, and the best damn pilot that I ever had the pleasure of meeting. Our Chief Scientist, Raeissyl Arlymm was always stuck on himself, but was more intelligent than any other man on Hyrriah. Synni Kawplr, and Zawrnai were a colonist couple, meant to try populating our new home. Their soon to be neighbors, Vraxx Liyrne, and Nroam were in the same boat.
"Krauwm!" Draeia called for me from the cockpit. "We're hovering above Syrrin right now. You wanna get everyone ready for landing?" She asked, with the sorrow of the still fresh tragedy still audible in her voice.
"Bring the Ark down as soon as possible. I'll take the colonists out with the mobile shelters so we can get started." I ordered.
She nodded in response, and I thought about saying something to her before I left. In the end, I didn't have the heart to confront what was on all of our minds. We were really the last hope for humanities survival.
The Ark set down, and I took the Vraxx's and the Synni's out to be the first humans to set foot on Syrrin. the moment the doors opened, the green fog that polluted the air blasted us in the face. The colonists were hesitant, but they finally set foot on the dark green soil of Syrrin for the first time.
"Doctor Raeissyl says the air is breathable here, but... It doesn't look like it." Said Zawrnai, in her usual worried tone. Her husband rushed to comfort her. "It'll be alright hon... this is our new home.
"Well our intel says the air isn't toxic, but I wanna run some tests before we do anythi-" I tried to say before Nroam cut me off.
"This is all we got! We can't afford to complain about this place just because the damn air looks funny. If Doc Raei, says it's good, then it's good." He said as both him, and his wife took off the helmets to their suits.
They took deep breathes, encouraging the Synni's to do the same. I sighed in relief, but just as I was about to take off my own to breath a bit myself, Liyrne began coughing violently. She vomited a green sludge, and a collection of olive green cysts formed all over her face. I rushed to tackle her back into the Ark. The other colonists rushed to put their helmets back on as well.
The hatch to the Ark closed behind us and the decontamination process cleansed the air of Syrrins green fog. Arlymm rushed into the room and pulled Liyrne into the examination room. Just as the doors closed behind the doctor and the sick woman, the rest of the colonists began their own fit of violent coughing. Tears fell, and screams were heard. In my attempts to calm them down, I only got a shove to the ground from Mrs. Synni.
"I knew it!" She screamed. Her moans of anguish as her and her husband cried in each others arms made me aware of something. In this moment of despair among the last remaining humans in the universe, I had no answers. I, who had been entrusted in everyone's protection, had failed to do so. Due to my lack of diligence, our species may have been doomed.
Our colonists were rushed into the examination room with the doctor, leaving me and Draeia alone in the main hall of the ship. The sliver of hope we might have had, had been shattered. "So... we get to watch everything fall apart huh?" She asked as she sat against the wall with me.
I nodded and sighed. "I didn't think it could be worse than watching Hyrriah go up in flames. Now I get to watch the last bit of humanity die slowly." I said. Draeia allowed herself to cry as she clung to me for comfort. We all wanted to feel that at least we weren't alone in the end.
Arlymm rushed out of the room yelling for us to get in and see something. The two of us sprinted inside to see something miraculous, but also horrifying. A small, greenish creature lay dead on the doctors desk. The colonists lay on tables unconscious.
"This thing, came from Mrs. Vraxx's cysts. Upon taking a blood sample I discovered something. It looks alien, but it's DNA is completely human. It has completely human reproductive organs, this being a male. The only difference between this and a human being is bone structure, skin color, and a few changes in the lungs." The doctor said.
Me and Draeia stood there in shock. "Are you saying that an organism spawned from whatever toxin infected our crew?" I asked.
The doctor nodded. "it seems that more will form as well. This however, is killing the colonists." He said, seeming pale.
My eyes widened as I noticed Arlymms neck forming some cysts. In my distracted state, Draeia got too close to Nroam, who vomited all over her. She screamed and ran off, but I knew it was too late.
In the end, we were all infected, but this is no tragedy; it's our fresh start. I don't know your name, I don't know if you'll even understand our language, but I need to help those who descended from us. Be better... learn from our history and avoid being your own downfall. The logs are here for you all... you are the silver lining to the Ark Vessels story.
Irryll Krauwm... signing off.
