5.) The Office

WOWOW hey guys :) So sorry for being MIA but I had finals and when you have finals...if you don't pass them you're screwed. So I got 20 comments, and literally only 3 people contributed to it and I would call that cheating, but I DID allow you guys to comment multiple times, so here's your update. I realized that I have really long ANs, so I'm going to start cutting them short. Goal for this chapter: 20 votes(you can't vote multiple times so;))

The coach just looked at Jack and Grant, both of whom had raised their hands. He instinctively nodded towards Grant, who then looked towards Lyla and smirked. Grant strode towards her in a domineering manner, with Lyla playing the part of a frightened girl. Eyes wide, she took in every detail of him: his 2-3 day old stubble, his muscular forearms, soft hair, and an indentation near his mouth that appeared when he smiled.

When Grant passed her, she swirled around towards him, and trailed after him. As they reached the door, the coach called out behind them saying, "Please, PLEASE do not put another freaking hole in the building!" Lyla turned around, gave a tremulous smile at the coach, and exited the gym.

After about 30 seconds of walking side-by-side, Grant said, "So whose name is Lyla Scorzer?" Lyla went quiet for a minute, remembering the hole in the identity she had woven out before she registered at the school. Grant did come over to her house before school started, and her parents, not knowing her new target, did introduce her as Lyla Scorzer.

"That's my real name, but I personally like to go by Lily Quatry, I think it fits me a bit more," said Lyla, thanking the fact that she had an old facebook account of hers which she never really deleted, since it reflected her innocence, her childhood. She still used it, just in case someone found her true identity and wanted to investigate; the only thing they would find was a couple of pictures from when she was five or six. Even back then she wasn't someone to post her current photos; just her old baby pictures, since she believed they were probably the best ones of her.

"Right, because, you know, Jay Z really fits me, so I tell my teachers that I'm Jay Z. No biggie." He shrugs while saying this and looks at Lyla afterwards, trying to get a rise out of her, but she simply responds with, "I thought you were supposed to be walking me to the office, not interrogating me about my name."

He stops in the middle of the tiled hallway.

"Who the hell are you?"

Lyla just keeps walking. Grant jogs up to her, but this time, he places a hand on her bicep and turns her around to face him. "Are you stalking me? Is that was this is?" Lyla kept her gaze steady, staring straight into his blue-green eyes.

"You know, unless you want me to tell the office that you were harassing me in the hallway, I suggest you let go immediately and escort me to the front office, I didn't come here just to be confronted by someone that I don't even know." Grant immediately drop her arm and looked furious at her. "You know, most people would be glad to talk to me. I'm not quite sure who the hell you are, but you better stay away from me, otherwise I can make your life hell real quick." Lyla craned her neck in his direction and said, "If your ability to make my life hell is anything like your volleyball skills, then I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll be able to take you seriously."

She turned around and strode away saying, "By the way, you don't have to take me to the office, I know where it is."

Grant stood there in a quiet silence, watching her traipse away. Lyla turned the corner, and immediately when she did, her heart started to pound, and she almost ran to the office, seeking refuge in the kind old ladies whose smiles would be quick to turn into frowns, especially after they had heard what she had done.

When she walks into the the office though, she doesn't meet the lady at the front desk. No, she meets the wife of Samuel Blackwell, Elowyn Blackwell. She immediately recognizes Lyla, and exclaims, "Lyla, honey! It's great to see you! How do you like your new school? How were your classes? Did you make any new friends?" As Elowyn continued to bombard her with questions, Lyla started to feel dizzy, like her brain was shutting itself off from the rest of the world. She looked towards Elowyn and held her hand for a second, steadying herself. Elowyn immediately caught on and felt her forehead. "Honey, are you alright?" Lyla blinked and breathed out, "I'm fine, I'm fine, it's just that we were playing volleyball in the gym and when I struck the ball it kind of broke a portion of the floor. I guess I'm feeling a bit lightheaded because of that." Elowyn looked at her with worry. "Honey if you're worried about the cost or about your parents, it's okay, I can pay it off for you. We set aside money for charities and donate a good portion to this school. It's about time that that gym got renovated. As long as it was an accident, you've got nothing to worry about."

She took her hand and walked her to the front desk. A rather young women sat there, looking as if she was still in college, and stared back at them nervously, biting her lips and fidgeting with her fingers. "Mrs. Blackwell, you have another question?" "No darling, I don't, I have a statement to make. This young girl here unknowingly struck a volleyball hard, and apparently the wood of the gym broke. I've been telling my husband to put at least some of our donation towards renovating the gym, but he only wanted to upgrade the school's software. I would like to file a form so that about $40,000, or 30% of the money that our family donates goes towards renovating the gym. A portion of the floor is already demolished, we might as well ensure that accidents like this one won't happen again by rebuilding the gym."

The young woman jots all of this down on a sticky note and looks back up at Mrs. Blackwell. She stutters, "A-Anything else, ma'am?" Elowyn looks at the sticky note with her left eyebrow raised. "Are you sure you're going to keep writing on that little sticky note which could easily get lost? Or are you planning on getting me an actual form, which I can sign, and get a copy of, while you stow away the real copy in a file somewhere in this godforsaken building?"

The young woman looks at her with wide eyes and says, "Of course, I'm so sorry, what was I thinking. I'll get your form right away ma'am." The office attendant got up fast, her chair squeaking, while she scurried off in haste, disappearing through the hallway connecting the main office to the back rooms. An older, dark-skinned lady came through the doorway, ready to take her place.

"Elowyn! My gosh! It's so good to see you! I haven't seen you around in quite some time! It's always just me and your husband exchanging either pleasantries or dollar bills, cheques, receipts, etc. Girl, how have you been?"

"Ulrika! Oh my goodness! I haven't seen you in ages! How are Hadwin and the kids doing? Wow, it's been so long! We're all doing fine, but I'm filled to the brim with work right now with opening a firm and all, so yes, it has been pretty hectic. Oh, that reminds me. I wanted to offer you a job at the new firm, maybe as my secretary? You know I don't like all the newbies who are still trying to figure out how the coffee machine works, but I know you have a strong work ethic, and I'd love to have you as part of my practice. It can be just like old times, what do you say?"

The older lady started to shake her head side to side, "I-" "Ssh, just think about it, please? Consider it a favor if you must, and I promise to give you a generous salary." "I don't doubt that you would give me a good salary, you always have, but I'm getting old, and about to retire. What good would a washed up old lady do for a young owner and her practice?"

"Wisdom."

Their conversation was cut short by the girl that was getting the form for Elowyn. With one last look, Elowyn said, "Please, just think about it?" Ulrika gave her one last nod. "Fine." She left into and Elowyn turned her head back to the lady at the front desk. "Could you just fill out the form for me? I'll read over it later and sign it, sometime by this end of this week." "Alright ma'am. Is there anything else that you would like me to address?" "No, thank you."

Elowyn turns towards me. "So...would you like me to drop you off? I have to pick up my son anyways, it wouldn't hurt to give you a ride as well, especially after the day you've been having." "Ummm-" RIIIIIIIIIIIING. RIIIIIIIIIIIIING. RIIIIIIIIIIING. The phone at the front desk was ringing. "Alright, come on, I think we're going to have to leave. I have to attend a meeting at 5 at the firm. But, we're going to have to find my son first."

Lyla looked around, and through the glass walls, she saw a crowd of boys cheering at some spectacle in the middle. She left the office and moved towards the crowd, squeezing her way through the middle until she got to the inner ring of the circle. What she saw wasn't what she was expecting however. Jack was in the middle of the ring, and he had a trophy in hand. Evans playfully tackled him and lifted him up into the air, and the cheering grew louder. Grant was standing off to the side, and he had a slight smile on his face, but he wasn't nearly as happy as the others. When he caught sight of Lyla, he moved through the throng of people, and he grabbed her hand, pulled her out of the crowd, and in a bit of a loud voice, he said, "I'm sorry for earlier; I didn't mean to probe you like that; I guess I just do that when I'm pissed, I've never lost like that to anyone, and you just broke that streak with little to no effort, obviously I'm going to have to up my game if I'm going to play against you." Lyla just shook her head and said, "It's fine, I wasn't too offended to be honest, just a bit weirded out, I don't think you should corner the new kid like that next time, you might just be surprised with what they can bring to the table." Grant just chuckled and looked around. "By the way, your mom is looking for you, she's in the office, and I'm carpooling with you guys, she offered me a ride." "Of course, she's in the office, that's like her second home," he turned his head towards Lyla, "We're giving you a ride?" "Yeah, apparently so, she's just dropping me off at my house." "Oh, cool, let's go catch our ride." With that, Grant strode off towards the office, without a glance behind him.

When they finally reached the office, Elowyn saw them, smiled, and walked out, both both of them trailing behind her. In the parking lot, she took out her keys and stood by a black Audi A7. Opening the driver side door, she slid in with grace. Grant hopped in the front seat and Lyla got in the back. The car ride was filled with music beaming from the car's radio. When they finally stopped in front of Lyla's house, she got out of the car, and Elowyn called out from the window, "Bye Lyla! Have a wonderful day sweetie! Tell your mom I said hi!" Lyla turned back smiled politely, and went inside her house, grinning at the thought of such a successful day. She had succeeded in four things:

1.)Understanding the dynamics of the school and its relation to Grant

2.)Getting on Elowyn's good side

3.)Found out how much money Grant's parents donate towards the school

4.)Found out which model car Elowyn drives/memorized its license plate

Now the only thing remaining for Lyla to do was to report back to base, aka her mentor, Sarah.
