mason & michael - three

Callicia stared out the kitchen window, watching the breeze hit the grass relentlessly. “Mom.” She heard Mason say as he walked slowly into the kitchen, tears filling his eyes. She turned around and returned the same facial expression towards him. “W-where’s Michael?” He gulped. Callicia simply shook her head with a hard but sympathetic look on her face. Puzzled, Mason walked up to her and held her by her shoulders. “Mom, where’s Michael?” He asked once again.

Callicia shooked her head numerous times and sat down at the kitchen table quickly, with her hands buried in her face. The front door suddenly opened to reveal the one and only Skylar. Mason looked down and patted the shoulders of his mother. “Where’s Michael?” He looked at Mason, Callicia & Augustus, who was casually dragging on the tablecloth.

“Like you don’t know.” She spat. “The thing I don’t know where he is!” Skylar revolted back. “Oh really? After your departure last night, you happened to leave your phone here. I read through all the texts between you and your guys. Now, tell me where he is.” “I’m not afraid to call the police.” She added with all seriousness and integrity.  Mason stood there in disbelievement, shaking his head. He was quite disappointed in his father.

To Skylar’s dismay, he left the house without any reasoning. There stood Callicia looking out the kitchen window, watching her husband flee from the house, once again.

“No way.”

“Unbelieveable!”

“So he just ran off like that?”

“Who does that?”

“Something’s up with him.” Mason replied to all of his friends, who were sitting on the living room floor intentionally, playing cards. Valonia, Kendall & Logan, all friends from school came over to the house to support him. “Is there any evidence concluding to where he may fled to?” Kendall asked. “No.” Mason answered hopelessly. “We could maybe check his phone.” Logan suggested. “More importantly his room, he could be hiding things.” Valonia stated wittingly. “We can’t do that. That’s invading his privacy!” Logan said. “So what if we face consequences for doing that? We get the information we need so we could find out what’s going on.” Valonia declared. “She’s right, we should do it.” Mason proclaimed.

“Yeah, I don’t think it’s a good idea to do this anymore.” Mason said nervously looking at the ripped picture of Skylar & Michael that Kendall was holding. “There’s no way we could know if we don’t try.” Valonia said. “Found an old journal.” Logan announced. He then handed it to Mason who subsequently flipping through the distorted pages. “Guys read this, it’s inconceivable.”

July 16th, 1994

So today, Callicia & I got married. Unfortunately, I was so stupid enough to go skydiving before. One last adventure being a single guy was a must. I knew Callicia and I had a whole life in front of us. There was no time for the crazy stunts I would pull off while we were dating. I thought everything was going to be fine until I realized I was stuck in the middle of nowhere. There I was standing in my tux, parachute still attached to my back, walking through of field of grass in Nebraska. Yeah, I was 4 hours late, Callicia was mad, and Michael made it no better.

As I walked through the church doors, Michael was there trying to calm down Callicia. Prior to arriving, it was revealed that my own father wanted Michael to marry Callicia instead. My own fucking father. Oh wait, he’s the prefered one. Yeah, I was upset, yeah I yelled at my father, I fought with Michael physically, destroyed the cake and ruined her dress. I was afraid she would refuse to marry me after that. Turns out, it was all Michael’s doing. If it wasn’t for him, I would be single. I still hated him, he deserves to die. Or at least stay out of my life for once, and stop trying to make it ‘better’.

Brother knows best? I’d rather listen to my dead drug addicted great-grandmother.

“Wow.” Valonia said. “I know right.” Mason said looking back at the book. ‘“I can’t believe he destroyed the cake.” Logan shook his head with his hand on one hip. Kendall rolled his eyes and took the book from Mason, flipping to the back of the journal. “The last entry is exactly 2 weeks ago. In fact, it’s the last page.” Kendall informed them. “Let’s read it.” Mason suggested.

Today Michael and I fought. You would think it’s a once in a while brother thing but we practically do it every week. Callicia & Gus’ were at the supermarket while Mason was at school. Michael was on the floor with blood rushing down the side of his head. He limped upstairs when I pulled a switchblade out. “You’re a psycho, get your life together. If I wasn’t here Callicia would’ve left with Mason & Gus’ years ago. At least I’m trying to help you out with your family, but I guess I’m not the good enough brother you always wanted.” Were the last words he said to me before going upstairs.

He looked hurt, so what? I’m cold-hearted, I don’t care. When it comes down to Callicia and my kids, it’s a must. He has nothing to do, he’s just a leech, an attach on to my family. I officially decided to get rid of him. Me and my boys are gonna put him in his place. I won’t have to worry about him intruding anymore.

Logan looked over at Mason whose eyes were filled with water. “He wants to kill him?” He said breathlessly. “I didn’t know your father was that violent.” Valonia said unknowingly. “Yeah, I can’t believe him, I mean he destroyed the cake for God’s sake!” Logan exclaimed shaking his head. “Dude, you're still on that?!” Kendall yelled then slapped the back of Logan’s head.

“What are you guys doing in here?” They all jumped to hear Callicia’s voice. “Oh uh, Mason here ..” Kendall began. “He needed his eye-drops!” Valonia continued. “Because he fell down the stairs and dirt went in his eyes!” Logan panicked. “And then, Logan, he, he poked Mason in the eye by accident with a pencil because we were studying and he needed to sharpen his pencil.” Kendall continued.

“Yeah mom, my eye is killing me. Needed them eyedrops.” Mason finished while picking up the bottle, squeezing a couple of drops into his right eye. “Alright, when you’re done will you all please help me put up the groceries?” She asked while clutching on to Augustus. “Not a problem Mrs. Rosewood!” Logan gave her a thumbs up as she headed to the kitchen while bumping into Mason who spilled most of the bottle into his eyes. “Ah, you assfuck!” Mason screamed. “What’s an assfuck?” Logan asked with his face scrunched up in disgust. “You don’t wanna know.” Valonia said pushing Logan out the room towards the kitchen.

“Mom.” Mason said walking into the kitchen slowly with Kendall. “What’s up honey?” She turned around from the kitchen sink. “We’ve got something to show you.” Mason explained. “What is it?” Callicia asked. “Sit down, will ya’!” Logan said pushing her to the kitchen table and opened out a chair for her. The four sat down around the table and opened up to journal to the few entries they’ve read previously. Callicia looked up at them after scanning through all those words.

“Let’s go.” She slammed the book down on the table and stomped towards the front door with Augustus crawling right behind her.
