MASON & MICHAEL - ONE
✿
Skylar Rosewood had barely stopped his black-colored 2015 Cadillac Escalade before Mason was out the car door, racing through his family’s modern-like living room. Skylar gasped while watching his son sprint into the house, when he could’ve possibly gotten injured. Not everyone was an optimistic nor pessimistic, but Skylar himself, he was more like in between. He frowned while shutting the car door, then continued walking up the steps to his house.
“Uncle Michael, Uncle Michael!” Mason exclaimed as he slapped the knees of his sleeping uncle. His uncle rose up while his fedora tipped of his head, revealing his tight wet-looking jheri curls. His uncle Michael, was the brother of his father, Skylar Rosewood. As a very affectionate man, he wasn’t too affectionate to his own brother. He would always be the prefered brother because of his optimistic personality. The Rosewood family would always joke and question Skylar’s gender because of his unisex name. Another reason why Skylar wasn’t the type of person to look at the bright side of things.
“Heya Mason, what’s up?” His uncle greeted him before slouching back down into the couch. “I finally got my drivers license!” Mason told him excitedly. “After four tries?” Michael asked. “After four tries.” Mason nodded, then flashed a smile at his somewhat tired uncle. “That’s really great to hear. Did you drive home?” Michael asked curiously. “Actually, no.” Skylar began as he stepped into the living room, passing his son and brother, then resting his keys on the kitchen table.
“Why not?” Michael leaned forward to glance at Skylar from the living room.“The kid is too excited. He nearly got injured by getting out the car before I could even park it.” Skylar replied walking back over to them slowly, as he gave Mason a hard look with his deep penetrating eyes. Mason slightly bowed his head down and stared at the carpeted floor. Michael placed his large hand onto Mason’s shoulder, then looked up at his brother. “Mason’s growing up, he’s a junior in high school, 16 years old and counting, definitely responsible and ready to take on any obstacle that’s headed his way.” He informed him while smiling at Mason sympathetically.
“Think fast!” Skylar grabbed Mason’s large stuffed animal of the floor and aimed it at him. Mason tumbled over with the large stuffed teddy bear superior to him. “See what I mean?” Skylar raised his eyebrows at Michael. Mason propelled the teddy bear off of him and glared at his father. They exchanged glances and at once, his father exited the room. Mason stood up, and plopped himself on the couch. “What’s Sky’s problem today?” Michael asked. “I’m not too sure, he’s been grumpy since I officially got my license. I guess he isn’t happy that I’m finally doing things on my own for once.” He replied.
“Have you told your mom yet?” “No, it looks as if mom is coming home late today. I will call her soon though.” “It’s funny how you tell me things first before your own parents. You know that’s not right, we’ve had the talk about this already.” Michael told him softly. “It’s just that you’re more approachable with news, whether it’s good or bad. You never get mad, you would always be happy and if it was news that’s not so good, you’d always give me advice to reassure myself.."
“I do understand where you’re coming from, Mason. Recently, I started to assume that your father’s been in a funk since we’ve grown closer and closer.” Michael advised him. “So you’re saying that we can’t hang out together anymore? Are you saying that I should spend more time with dad?” Mason questioned him. “I’m saying that you should be closer with your dad, not me.” As soon as Mason heard that answer, he frowned in disgust.
In Mason’s opinion, hanging out with his father made him feel a certain type of way. Whenever they’d hang out, there’d just be sessions of silence throughout the activity or conversation. He paused before saying a few words. “So … when do I start?” Mason stared deeply at Michael. “Whenever is possible, kiddo.”
Mason looked horrified. He couldn’t imagine himself hanging out with his dad the way he does with Michael. To get him out of that state, Michael perked up and smiled at him widely. “Hey, you wanna head out to the park to play some ball?” He suggested. Mason’s face lit up. “Sure! Now what ball are we talkin’ about here?” He asked. “Definitely not basketball.” Michael replied. “Hey, why not?” Mason asked. “Ball is life.” He continued. The two paused then laughed hysterically at the same time.
“Let’s go.” Michael grinned as he stood up and made his way to the front door. “Wait, don’t forget your sunglasses.” Mason said while throwing them over to him. “Right.” Michael responded as he caught them between his fingertips. He shoved them down the pockets of his slacks and ran outside. “Race ya’ there!” Michael ran swiftly while looking back at Mason who was laughing really hard. Mason then ran after him to catch up.
Skylar pushed away the silk curtains and looked through the window. He looked at the two running across the lawn happily. His eyebrows narrowed, glaring at them. He stood there watching their every move. Skylar was plotting something, and it wasn’t just something. It was something real good.
