8.3|| A Break

Kay wrapped her sweater tighter around herself as she hurried down the stairs and towards Kyle and Jessie's room. She'd thought it was a good idea to get out there as soon as possible, but she'd underestimated just how cold it was. The flimsy wool did nothing and the chilling wind sent her into a trembling fit that almost knocked her off the stairs.

She reached the door and banged her fist against it, dancing on the spot to keep herself warm. The unlaced boots weren't helping the warmth of her feet. She knocked again, even harder, switching from dancing to jumping.

"Coming! Damn it Jessie, where's the fire?" Kyle yanked the door open.

Kay raised her eyes to him, and no amount of cold could snuff out the fire inside her. He wore sweats and nothing else, his hair shiny from the moisture in it. She hadn't seen him shirtless in months. He hadn't gotten bigger, but everything about him seemed better defined, as if in sharper focus. God, she'd missed this, missed him.

A cold gust of wind sent them both into a trembling fit. Kyle took her hand and pulled her in, closing the door after her. Only once inside the warmth of the room, did she fully realize how cold she was.

"What were you doing outside dressed like this? You'll freeze to death." He let go of her hand and retrieved the towel placed on a nearby chair.

"Sorry. Jerry came by to talk to Tina and I had to make myself scarce. I didn't realize just how cold it was outside." She sat on the bed, watching him as he resumed drying his hair. "I came over to see how you and Jessie were doing."

"Jessie's not here." He threw the towel back on the chair and dropped on the bed, too. "Huh, never thought Jerry would leave them alone."

"My guess is Jimmy and Jessie are a block of ice somewhere out there and that perfectly good, warm room is empty." Kay laughed as Kyle grinned at her, leaning back on his elbows.

She watched the ease with which he lounged next to her, as if they lay on the same bed regularly. They didn't. The last time the two of them had been anywhere near a bed, things had gotten beyond hot. And the more she watched him, the more she wished it would somehow get to that again.

"So, this is how you were planning to sleep?" she asked, waving her hand in his direction.

He looked down at his bare chest and then back at her, rising an eyebrow while an incredibly hot smirk lifted the corners of his mouth. "It depends now."

"Depends? On what?"

"On who I'm sleeping with."

Heat rose to her cheeks, but it wasn't a blush, because it was spreading all over, finally driving away the cold. "And who are you planning to sleep with?"

"Like this?" He looked down at himself again. "With no one."

As much as she liked this game, it was getting confusing. "What do you mean?"

He leaned back even further, as though inviting her to climb on top of him. Or at least that's how it seemed to her.

"I mean that since I'm sharing with Jessie, I definitely need a t-shirt or something." His eyes zeroed in on her, slightly narrowed, dark blue like a stormy sky. "Now if it were you and me... I'd lose the pants."

Yes, lose the pants. That's what she wanted. What really got to her though, was that it was possible. They were in a hotel room. What stopped them from just not opening the door? It's not like it could be opened from the outside. But she knew she couldn't let Jessie spend the night with Tina.

"What are you thinking, sweetheart?"

His tone screamed that he already knew, so did the look on his face. It was also obvious that he was thinking the exact same thing. And she could play his game, too.

"What are you thinking?"

He didn't answer. In less than a second he was in sitting position, his hand behind her head, and he pulled her into a kiss. It was like an explosion spreading through her. Her hands darted to his shoulders and started wondering, relishing the heat of his skin, the strength of his body. It wasn't a light kiss either, it was the kind she liked most, the kind that promised to be just an interlude for bigger and better things.

So she took the invite and pushed him down, climbed on top of him, never taking her mouth away from his. He let her, moving his hands from her face to her hips. It only lasted seconds before he rolled over her, pinning her down under his weight. And how she loved it, digging her nails into his back, feeling his muscles contracting under her touch.

His mouth moved away from hers as he started kissing her jaw, her neck, behind her ear. The feeling of his hot breath on her skin sent her head spinning. She needed this so much. The last weeks had been torture, how they'd both been so busy, so in public. They were finally alone. She moaned as he trailed kisses on her collarbone.

"Stop moaning," he mumbled into her skin.

"Why?" she breathed, shifting to give him better access.

"You know what it does to me."

"That's why I'm doing it." She moaned again when he increased the pressure of his hold on her.

"We're being stupid. And I'm being an outright fucking moron."

He said it as an undeniable conclusion, but it didn't stop him. He returned to kissing every inch of uncovered skin a moment later. Kay grinned to herself, closed her eyes and knocked her head back. Her hands ran down his back and her fingers secured themselves on the waistband of his sweats. He didn't stop her, didn't comment on how handsy she was getting. Just ran one hand down her thigh and hooked her knee, indicating that he wanted her to wrap herself around him.

No complaints there. She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him harder against her. His fingers started working on the buttons of her pajama top, his mouth following in their wake.

Then there was a click. A second later, a cold breeze washed over them. Kay's eyes shot open and her head snapped towards the door. With a scream, she pulled her sweater tight around herself.

Jimmy and Jessie stood in the doorway, eyes wide, jaws hitting the floor. Kay could feel Kyle tensing all over, but he thankfully didn't get off her, continuing to shield her as she buttoned up as discreetly as possible.

"I'm freaking killing you, Jimmy," he growled.

"We're so sorry, we had no idea Kay was here," Jessie said, her voice much higher than normal. Jimmy just stood there, staring.

"You could at least come in and close the damn door," Kyle said.

Kay finally managed to straighten herself out. As if sensing it, Kyle rolled off her just as Jessie pushed Jimmy in and shut the door behind them.

"Well, that was awkward," he said, and Kay was really grateful that neither he nor Jessie were trying to make eye contact with her, but rather focused on Kyle who was taking it like a champ.

"You..." Kyle faltered and groaned, dropping with his back on the bed. "I can't even yell at you because it's your room, too, and you were obviously freezing outside."

"We could've just stayed out and shut the door," Jimmy said.

Jessie elbowed him in the ribs. "What are you trying to do? Get us killed?"

Kay giggled and the two of them finally looked at her, smiles on both their faces. "So I take it Jerry's not out yet."

"Nope. God knows what he's doing in there," Jimmy said with a dramatic eye roll. It was immediately followed by an impish grin. "I hope it's something naughty."

"I doubt it. And unfortunately it's not his fault," Kyle mumbled, getting up and throwing a hoodie on. He then picked up his winter jacket and reached his hand out to Kay. "Let 's throw Jerry out of there. Since the barge in was his fault, I will be playing his part."

"So we're calling it the barge in now?" Jimmy asked.

"Would you rather we called it the near death experience?" Kyle retorted, shrugging his jacket on. He reached out his hand and helped Kay to her feet. "Come on, I'm taking you to bed."

I wish. "Okay."

"I should go, too. Goodnight, Jessie." Jimmy said, taking Jessie's hand and pulling her towards him.

Kyle and Kay stepped out. Kay shivered again, but this time, he opened his winter jacket and pulled her inside. With their bodies pressed so close together, there was no cold left, just shimmering lights and beautiful snow. And when he kissed her neck again, it felt even better.

"Wanna make a snow angel?" he asked. "Because I don't know about you, but I really need to cool down."

Before she could answer, the door opened and Jimmy joined them.

"What, that was it?" Kyle asked. "I stepped out especially so you two could have a little privacy."

"Trust me, as far as I'm concerned, we don't need a little privacy," Jimmy mumbled. The following moment he seemed to have sobered. "Don't tell Jessie that. I don't want to scare her."

Kyle and Kay both laughed. She had a feeling Jessie wouldn't mind the sentiment.

Jimmy sank his hands in his pockets as they headed out to fetch Jerry. Things were spiraling a little out of control, but what really got to him was that he didn't care. That had been awkward, but he hadn't thought to look away or get out at all. And Jessie's reaction proved beyond all doubt that it should be a big deal. He'd felt nothing. No embarrassment, no remorse, just a bit of what do you know?

They reached the door and Kay unlocked it without knocking, probably hungering for a payback. They all froze in the threshold. Tina was crying her heart out on Jerry's shoulder while he held her tightly, patting her head with one hand, rubbing her back with the other.

"Tina, are you okay?" Kay asked warily.

Tina raised her eyes and looked at them, tears pouring down her cheeks. For a second, she just stared, then she left Jerry's arms and rushed to hug Kay.

"I'm so sorry," she cried as Kay patted her back awkwardly.

By the second pat, Tina bolted towards him and Kyle and grabbed their forearms, squeezing harder than she looked capable of.

"You're a good guy. I've always liked you," she said to Kyle.

He just stared until Kay came over and nudged him slightly.

"Thanks?" he said.

Tina turned her attention to Jimmy and he had to fight the impulse to pull away. She seemed lost for words in front of him.

"Tina, it's okay." Jerry came to her and wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her away from them. "Everything will be fine."

"Yeah, I'm sure Jerry's right. I'll just... wait for you outside," Jimmy said, already walking out backwards.

Kyle soon joined him and closed the door behind him. "What the hell was that about?"

Jimmy didn't know if to say something because he was wondering the very same thing, so the moment Jerry stepped out, he addressed Kyle's question to his twin.

"I'm annoyed enough as it is, I don't need this," Jerry answered, turning away. Before he could take even a few steps, Kyle grabbed his arm and yanked him back.

"Because of you, the barge in took place, so you're explaining."

"Apparently the barge in is official," Jimmy muttered.

Jerry looked Kyle up and down and sighed. "Okay, but can we step out of the cold please?"

They nodded and the three of them headed towards Jimmy's room. The moment they stepped inside, Jerry let out another huge sigh and dropped on the bed.

"I'm annoyed with myself. I blew my top." He groaned and buried his face in his hands. "I said most of the things you said and it went really smoothly, right up to the point I got a little closer to her. She didn't like it, and I'm not sure why I did it, but it felt right at the moment. But when she pulled away... I just..."

"You just what?" Jimmy asked carefully. Jerry listening to them was beyond weird, but him actually going for contact was even weirder.

"I started spewing out everything on my mind. How I didn't like her saying bad things about Jessie, and being jealous, and getting between you and Kay. That I'm fed up with the stage of our relationship. She hated it actually, she started crying." Jerry fell silent, looking at his hands.

"I'm so proud of you, I feel like crying," Kyle deadpanned.

Jerry smirked, but stayed silent.

"But you seemed okay, " Jimmy said, having the feeling there was more to the story.

"I apologized," Jerry said into his hands. "I told her all I want is for her to be happy and that I wasn't going to force her into anything. And she started crying harder, but we're apparently not fighting. Though I'm not sure we even had a fight considering she said nothing in return."

Jimmy bit his lip, unsure of what to say to that, but Kyle apparently had the perfect answer.

"What were you saying about me and Kay?"

The words pushed Jerry back into his usual, over-worried state. "Oh, nothing really..." He let out the most nervous laugh in the world.

Kyle squinted at him, but Jimmy nudged him and shook his head to indicate he should drop it. Kyle turned his suspicious gaze to him, but took the hint because he changed the subject.

"Okay. Just relax, Jerry. I have a feeling that you'll be getting your way soon."

"What? I don't want to..." Jerry started, outraged.

"I meant Tina will start pinching in a little, too. But you're obviously thinking in other fields." Kyle smirked and Jerry turned hilariously pale. "Jimmy, can you come out a bit, I want to ask you something."

"You two aren't talking behind my back, are you?" Jerry asked.

"Don't flatter yourself." Jimmy laughed and followed Kyle out. "What?"

"Why did you want me to drop the subject?"

"It doesn't matter. As long as Jerry thinks you're clueless, he's willing to give you and Kay a break."

"Clueless about what?" Kyle asked confused.

"Does it really matter as long as it gets Jerry off your back?" Jimmy patted him on the shoulder and back inside. He hoped Kyle got the message, because whatever Jerry meant, a break sounded too good to spoil.

❄❄❄

Yay, this huge chapter is finally over. I know you had fun to see many hormones running around and crashing and burning. What do you think? Did Jerry fix things? Is the Tina drama finally over and everyone can mind their own lovey-dovey lives?

No matter what, it's getting increasingly hard for people to keep it in their pants. Which as annoying as it might be, it's actually a common effect of camp syndrome*.

So, thanks for reading and don't forget to vote and comment. I know next chapter will be fun because we're going back to our favorite street rats.

*camp syndrome is when you get very intense feelings in a very short amount of time because you feel detached from your life and like it's all going to go down in the next few days. Kind of like when you go to camp or on vacation and your whole world revolves around that.
